“Green” blogging to recruit Gen Y’ers.

We’re well beyond the buzz stage of ‘going green’ and marketing your company’s brand as eco-friendly. Simply put, leading multi-nationals like GE and BP have transformed their business around the “green” movement. And with that, they have transformed their culture and how they recruit talent for their companies. These types of organizations are of course the benchmark. However, even if you work for an SME that’s just starting a go-green philosophy, there’s much opportunity to brand yourself and create a deeper connection with the target group of employees you’ll probably be hiring.

“Green blogging” is great tactic you might consider exploring. It is a combination of two important components that can increase your brand’s awareness: corporate social responsibility and online communication through blogging. When done right, each one alone is powerful, but when you combine them it can be highly impactful when it comes to successfully recruiting Gen Y talent. Why? Because many Gen Y’ers seek companies that are “like minded” in terms of what causes they support. If Gen Y’ers find out about your company’s corporate social responsibility programs through a well-done blog about the cause you support, you will find them wanting to work for you.

The overall goal is to not create a blog selling your company’s story or to actively recruit talent. It’s about creating a simple messaging platform to start dialogue around the cause your company believes in. ‘Green’ blogging can build your brand and ultimately help create a connection between skilled job seekers and the type of company that might fit them well. And vice versa. Give it a try – it’s virtually cost-free and presents unlimited ROI!

Gen Y workers considered most likely to be on the move as the economy rebounds. Are you prepared?

According to a recent Deloitte study, Managing Talent in a Turbulent Economy, Generation Y (under age 30) workers are considered most likely to be on the move, with nearly two thirds of executives predicting a significant increase in turnover among this group as the economy stabilizes in the coming months. What retention strategies does your organization have in place to keep its most valued workers, including key members of the Gen Y segment? Click here to read the full Deloitte report…

What to do when your flexible work environment loses its edge?

Employing a diverse team of workers – many of whom are Gen Y’ers – has forced me to challenge conventional wisdom. Specifically, working 9-5, from a formal office environment is simply an antiquated notion in today’s mobile world. So, instead, we have built up a collaborative team built on productivity, performance and trust – which then enables us to have in essence a virtual team. I love this, and more importantly, my staff loves it. We are incredibly productive and efficient! And my team is highly engaged. Right now it’s working for us, but I fear the day we have a team member’s performance dip, or have their engagement drop. My management skills will be put to the test. This undoubtedly is the time I will need to act quick to solve an employee issue, or else I risk having the greater team infected by a sour apple (and thus our flexible work arrangement). I am curious what experiences are out there on this, and what you all can share with me and others on how to handle a similar situation……

4 facts why Gen Y’er are essential for your company…

Highly tech-savvy.

Many of today’s young people clicked a mouse before they turned the pages of a book. Gen Y employees are eager and excited to share their expertise about technology, and it makes them feel valued when you ask for their help. You’ll never miss out on the next big technology trend (social networking, Twittering, wikis) as long as you have Gen Y’ers around.

Super-productivity.

When I meet college students, I am consistently impressed by all of their involvements. They manage academics, extra curriculars, sports and jobs—and still never miss a single text message. When young people are engaged by their employers, they’ll use their multi-tasking talents and super-productivity on behalf of your company.

Environmentally conscious.

If you can’t hire Al Gore, the next best thing is a Gen Y’er. A recent MonsterTRAK poll found that 80% of young professionals are interested in securing a job that has a positive impact on the environment, and 92% would be more inclined to work for a company that's environmentally friendly. If you’ve been meaning to launch a company recycling effort, ask a Millennial to lead the way.

Highly talented friends.

Gen Y-ers see very little boundary between work and life, so they love to work with their friends. If you’re a good employer, your young employees will spread the word and help you recruit their most talented peers. That beats recruiting on the Internet any day.

What do you think?

Did you know, your Gen Y workers are at high-risk of leaving your company, despite the challenging job market!???

According to a recent Adecco survey, Gen Y workers (71% of them!) are likely to look for a new job as the economy improves. This is terrible news for us managers who run teams made up of individuals under 30 years old. My team, in fact, is 90% Gen Y! Hmmm, I might have a crisis brewing....

Well, now is the time you - the manager - need to start re-affirming your relationship with your staffers and build the ties that will keep these workers employed (and engaged) with you. All of us are in challenging times - layoffs, budget cutbacks and morale dips to name a few. But there certainly are some easy, no-cost things you can do as a manager to mitigate some of the risk around your Gen Y workforce jumping ship. A few thoughts...

Focus on mentor ship - give your younger workers a chance to teach something new to your more seasoned veterans, and vice versa.

Highlight small wins - continually recognize and praise a job well done.

Active acknowledge and support career planning and development (initiative the discussions!).

Consider some added work flexibilities - perhaps an extra day here and there to work from home, etc.

Let me know what you think though....tell me your thoughts and ideas!
