They are all magnificent sax players. Lets not split hairs about who played better.They are all extraordinary- but in very different ways. The one thing they all have in common is that they were all taught by my brother, the late, great Tony Hobbs. I think they all did their teacher proud- the only tragedy is that he wasn't here to see it. Love you all Zac, Phil and Jacam. My brothers legacy lives on in you.XXX

The Guitar sound and sparse arrangement remind me very much of Bill Frissell's style of composition (whom I like very much). I wonder if they attribute his west coast style to their own style of jazz?

I believe the album cover appearing on the "What's on" page is the correct one.

Congratulations and welcome to ABC Jazz.

Perhaps yourself and others should consider becoming the founding members of the "Inner Society for Safe Choices @ ABC Jazz" and help them build a little shrine to Kurt Elling.

Then, you could have hourly hymns sung out by Kurt Elling in a never-ending orgy dedicated to the mediocre of jazz artists. Kurt's next album entitled " The complete recorded works of Frank Sinatra, revisited ..again!" is sure to set your toes-a-tingling with anticipation.

I can hardly wait for that one.

If you are really interested in knowing what I am actually listening to (which I doubt) then view my recommendations and if you're really interested in knowing what sort of performances I attend, then view my downloads.

I rallied against the former ABC Jazz policy of 'Album of the Week' being on HOURLY rotation and they CHANGED IT.

I rallied against the damage being done to Jacam Manricks' career by the malfunctioning 'Album of the Week' playout system and THEY FIXED IT. Sadly not before probable damage was done to his placing at this years Wangaratta Jazz Festival. Many more people might have attended his performance if they were not already in possession of the preconceptions given to them by ABC Jazz about his music.

Sadly, both of these incidents have gotten tangled up with the Kurt Elling "Fan Club". It doesn't have much to do with him at all. I would have made the same protests irrespective of which artist was being FLOGGED TO DEATH by the ABC.

And now we have the coming reduction in Bandwidth to ABC Jazz to rally against. Not much hope on that one I am afraid.

Write to me again when you've been around for a bit longer and have worked out how this place works.

P.S. Who is Michael Bublé? I much prefer spinning my complete (all vinyl) recorded works of the Laughing Clowns. Been an LC fan for 30 years and I even brought along a member of 'The Go-Betweens' to their recent "Live at the Basement" sessions.

Phil Noy clearly did play wonderfully well and deserved to be a place getter in the competition. I know Phil, he is a delightful young man with loads of talent. However, on the day of the competition Zac Hurren played better. This is my belief, and also the belief of two thirds of the judges. Well done by all participants.

Mr Aztex does seem to have wax in his ears...........why is Sinatra 'the' benchmark ?...great and influential vocal phrasing yes...Elling himself would be the first to admit his respect and inspiration from the Frankie. But 'cheap' imitation is offensive to artists such as Elling who is a jazz historian and student of the jazz composition in his own right.........how many artists can claim similiar?.........keep spinning the Bubles.

Dear Aztec

You seem to have a beef about many things, as well as no judgement about music.

Mr Elling is a genius, pity you don't get it (and I've been playing and listening to music for 45 years).

His live performances are amazing. I've seen him 3 times, twice last April when he played with the SSO (who were inspired by the man). His live performances are picture perfect - you should go to one when he's back - if you can open your mind and ears.

Clearly a lot of folk around the world have been "fooled" by Kurt, read his Wikipedia entry.

Melbourne-based composer and valve trombonist Andrew Murray has won first place in the 2009 National Big Band Composition Competition.

The competition was staged by the Jazzgroove Mothership Orchestra and held at this year's Wangaratta Festival of Jazz.

Three finalists were selected to perform their competitions at the awards on Friday October 30, 2009; Jacam Manricks (QLD/NY), Joseph O'Connor (QLD) and Andrew Murray (VIC).

The compositions were performed by the Mothership Orchestra and judged by panellists Dave Panichi, Mike Nock and Evan Lohning.

Please help With any luck, someone will recognise this piece of big-band-like jazz, and be able to tell me who it is. This comes from an old reel to reel of my father's, from the late 1960s. It is incomplete. Dad had a habit of filling up the blank space left on the end of the tapes with stuff, and this is about the last one I can't identify. Please drop me an email if you can help. One of this year's most impressive jazz releases, 'The Sea' is the latest album by Sydney bassist Jonathan Zwartz.

The recording features NY-based Aussie ex-pat Barney McAll on piano as well as local icons Phil Slater; trumpet, Doug Devries; nylon string guitar, Hamish Stuart; drums and Fabian Hevia; percussion.

In this release, Zwartz mixes a strong musical conception with stunning production.

Home grown bassist Mark Lau dropped into the ABC studios on a recent visit from NY, hooking up with jazz legend Mike Nock for a unique recording session.

Both musicians shared their compositions on this intimate performance, which saw the pair tackle broad musical territory.

Mark and Mike also took the time to discuss the Australian jazz-scene as well as their experiences pursuing music overseas.

Biography:

Ken Nordine (born April 13, 1920) is an American voiceover and recording artist best known for his series of Word Jazz albums. His deep, resonant voice has also been featured in many commercial advertisements and movie trailers. One critic wrote that "you may not know Ken Nordine by name or face, but you'll almost certainly recognize his voice." The son of an architect, Ken Nordine was born in Chicago, Illinois. In Chicago he attended Lane Technical College Prep High School and the University of Chicago. He has three sons with his wife Beryl whom he married in 1945. During the 1940s, he was heard on The World's Great Novels and other radio programs broadcast from Chicago.He attracted much wider attention when he recorded the aural vignettes on Word Jazz . Word Jazz, Son of Word Jazz and his other albums in this vein feature Nordine's narration over cool jazz by the Chico Hamilton jazz group, recording under the alias of Fred Katz, who was then the cellist with Hamilton's quintet. Nordine began performing and recording such albums at the peak of the beat era and was associated with the poetry-and-jazz movement. However, some of Nordine's "writings are more akin to Franz Kafka or Edgar Allan Poe" than to the beats. Many of his word jazz tracks feature critiques of societal norms. Some are lightweight and humorous, while others reveal dark, paranoid undercurrents and bizarre, dream-like scenarios.

Biography:

Kurt Elling (born November 2, 1967) is an American jazz vocalist. Elling graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota in 1989. He then enrolled in The University of Chicago's Divinity School and remained a student there until January 1992, when he left school one credit short of graduation. In the last decade, Elling has released seven albums for the Blue Note label. He has also performed and recorded with many musicians, including David Amram, Bob Belden, Joanne Brackeen, Oscar Brown, Jr., Billy Corgan, Orbert Davis, George Freeman, Buddy Guy, Jon Hendricks, Charlie Hunter, Randy Bachman, Bob Mintzer, Rex Richardson, and Bob Sheppard. Elling has won the Down Beat and JazzTimes critics’ polls three years in a row in the Best Male Singer category. He is also Vice Chair of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, the 17,000-member service organization that produces the annual Grammy Awards. Kurt Elling's 2007 album "Nightmoves," released by Concord Jazz, was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album.As of 2008, Elling's band includes Laurence Hobgood on piano, Robert Amster on bass, and drummer Kobie Watkins. Elling is regularly featured at the Green Mill Cocktail Lounge at 4802 N. Broadway in Chicago, generally on Wednesday evenings when the band is not on tour.
