Artist Will Cotton Takes The Wraps Off A Katy Perry Portrait

New York, NY - On Wednesday, July 21st, renowned contemporary artist Will Cotton unveiled his recently completed portrait of chart-topping recording artist, Katy Perry. Katy was present for the unveiling in the artist’s Lower East Side, Manhattan studio. The painting will also be featured as the cover of Katy’s new album, Teenage Dream, scheduled for US release on August 24th.

The recording artist first contacted the painter five months ago to share her enthusiasm for his work. It was kismet or destiny as Cotton, a confirmed Katy fan, had long considered making her the subject of one of his confectionary landscape paintings. The resulting portrait was chosen by Katy to grace the cover of her newest release and it is recreated in live action as one of the scenes in her current video for “California Gurls”, which has been #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for the last six weeks. Cotton’s work serves as the inspiration for the visuals in the hit music clip-- with his trademark cotton candy clouds, candy stick forests, and gingerbread cabins prominent features of the fantasy scenery.

Teenage Dream is Katy’s much awaited follow-up to her 2008 multi-platinum release One Of The Boys which featured the hit singles “Hot N Cold”, “Waking Up In Vegas” and “I Kissed A Girl”. After her experience collaborating with the artist on her portrait, the singer-songwriter was enthusiastic to use more of his imagery as a visual component of her newest project. "California Gurls" video director Matthew Cullen and Motion Theory embraced the idea, enlisting Cotton as Artistic Director on the project, to recreate the artist’s images for the popular clip. Cotton recreated some of the work personally, including creating the board game played by Snoop Dogg in the video, and worked with set designer Teri Whittaker to create scenery based on his artwork. The video is so popular it has received over 18 million views in four weeks on YouTube.

While he does not consider himself a portrait artist, Cotton has depicted a few notable figures in his paintings, such as Tom Ford and Marie-Chantal of Greece. The Katy portrait and the resulting video has focused considerable public attention on an artist long recognized by art world cognoscenti and featured in important private and public collections across the globe. Said Cotton, “My collaboration with Katy started out as a mutual admiration society. I'm delighted that my paintings are the inspiration for this video. My work is about creating a utopia where all desire is fulfilled all the time, but where pleasure and delight can turn dark and dystopic. Katy embodies the archetypes that I look for in a subject. It was thrilling to work with her and to see her inhabit my landscapes.”

MUSIC MATTERS

The music world comes together to launch Music Matters. A collective of people in the music industry, including artists, retailers, songwriters, labels and managers has formed to remind listeners of the significance and value of music.

Music Matters is bringing people together from across the industry for the first time, to highlight the profound value of music and to educate consumers on how to identify legitimate music services.

Allowing the music to speak for itself, Music Matters comprises a series of short animated films about inspirational artists who have dedicated their lives to music and contributed to our cultural landscape. The films, including the stories of artists such as Sigur Ros, the Fron Choir, Blind Willie Johnson, The Jam, John Martyn, Nick Cave and Kate Bush, will be carried on supporting artist and organisation websites, with further films scheduled for roll out later in the year.

A Music Matters trust mark will be launched to help audiences make the ethical choice when looking for new music. The trust mark is a widespread certification scheme which identifies legitimate music services. Leading music retailers will display the trust mark and host the Music Matters films on their websites.

The Music Matters website, www.whymusicmatters.org, goes live on 24th March. It will host all of the films will as well as advice on how to identify legitimate music sites.

A routine notice letter was sent to Ms. Howell, as is customary in trademark practice, alerting her of Ms. Perry’s intended application.———————————————-
This is a routine trademark application, and I certainly haven’t sued anyone. As usual, some of the press seems to have delighted in creating a story where there is none.

one of the most AMAZEBALLS things happened today! First of all today has been so wonderful… my whole family is in town, here in Paris, and we celebrated my father’s birthday today and it’ so great to have my fartball brother/sidekick here. Tomorrow I get to play the world famous Olympia (LEGENDARY) !!! There couldn’t have been a better cherry on top to my day as this one… video explains it all!!!

The amazing Brian May came out to my show in London last night and I was oh so flattered and nervous to play infront of him… especially my Queen cover. so if you’re a regular reader of this blog you’ll know that I’m obsessed with a couple of things in life, 1. my cat, miss kitty… and sometimes 2. my bff, Markus Molinari. It’s a love hate relation… but mostly love. For his 31st birthday I bought him a ticket to tokyo to come with me. We visited Tokyo together about 4 years ago and it was where we first fell in love, from a distance. ha. He’s my sidekick. When I get sick, he gets sick. When I have a show, he has a show. I released One Of The Boys, he’s finishing mixing, One of The Girls. Anyway, I just wanted to post a couple pics from some fun times we’ve been having. Yesterday I got to shoot the cover of Nylon Japan and Markus was there… shooting some other cover (?) Also to see some fun behind the scenes and to see what marcheese is doing go to www.markusisthedrug.com. Yesterday was nylon shoot and filming in a space shuttle (random?) for japanese tv. Today was hanging out with Manish Arora and course shows every night. Tomorrow is CALIFORNIA ROLL @ MTV Japan VMA! GOGOGO!
