The Environmental Justice Small Grants Program (EJSG) is designed to
provide funding for eligible applicants working on, or planning to work
on, a project that addresses a local environmental and public health
issue within an affected community. The EJSG Program is a multi-statute
program designed to help communities understand and address their
exposure to multiple environmental harms and risks.

The primary purposes of proposed projects should be to develop a
comprehensive understanding of environmental and public health issues,
identify ways to address these issues at the local level, and educate
and empower the community. The long-term goals of the EJSG Program are
to help build the capacity of the affected community and create
self-sustaining, community-based partnerships that will continue to
improve local environments in the future.

An eligible applicant MUST BE one of the following entities:

1. A 501(c) (3), non-profit organizations as designated by the Internal
Revenue Service
2. A non-profit organization, recognized by the state, territory,
commonwealth, or tribe in which it is located
3. A city, township, county government and their entities, OR
4. A Native American tribal government (Federally recognized)
AND
5. Located within the same state, territory, commonwealth, or tribe that
the proposed project will be located.

In addition, an eligible applicant must be able to demonstrate that it
has worked directly with, or provided services to, the affected
community. An "affected community," for the purposes of this assistance
agreement program, is a community that is disproportionately impacted by
environmental harms and risks and has a local environmental and public
health issue that is identified in the proposal.

The following entities are INELIGIBLE:
- Colleges and universities
- Hospitals
- State governments and their entities
- Quasi-governmental entities (e.g., water districts, utilities)
- National, multi-state, or state-wide organizations with chapters
- Non-profit organizations that engage in lobbying activities as defined
in Section 3 of the
Lobbying Disclosure Act of 1995

CAMEO: Comparative Analysis of Marine Ecosystem Organization

Synopsis

CAMEO, or Comparative Analysis of Marine Ecosystem Organization, is one of the near-term priorities identified in the <http://www.nsf.gov/cgi-bin /good-bye?http://ocean.ceq.gov /about/docs/orppfinal.pdf>Ocean Research Priorities Plan prepared by the National Science and Technology Council's Joint Subcommittee on Ocean Science and Technology . The purpose of CAMEO is to strengthen the fundamental scientific basis for an ecosystem approach to the stewardship of our ocean and coastal living marine resources and ecosystems. The program will support research to understand complex dynamics controlling productivity, behavior, population connectivity, climate variability and anthropogenic pressures associated with living marine resources and critical habitats. CAMEO research will employ the use of a diverse array of ecosystem models, comparative analyses of managed and unmanaged areas, and ecosystem-scale mapping that can form a basis for future forecasting and decision support. The program will be implemented through a partnership between NOAA-National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) and NSF's Division of Ocean Sciences. NOAA NMFS released the first call for proposals in March 2008. A total of up to $2 million from the agencies will be available for initial 1-2 year projects; all proposals should be submitted to the NOAA call using <http://www.nsf.gov/cgi-bin /good-bye?http://www.grants .gov/>Grants.gov. This is the first of a series of CAMEO opportunities for research to be announced over the next several years.

international and interdisciplinary collaborations, data management,
visualization and preservation, and new applications of computational

Funding is available for primarily US activities - but will also fund international collaborative activities. Also funding US citizens to go to foreign countries and foreigners to come and work in US institutes.

In brief: there are 4 major programmes:

The Cooperation http://cordis.europa.eu/fp7/cooperation/home_en.html is the largest programme with EUR 32.4 billion supporting cooperation between universities, industry, research centres and public authorities throughout the EU and beyond. This is project funding bringing together many project partners in larger projects.

The Ideas programme http://cordis.europa.eu/fp7/ideas/home_en.html is an investigator driven program (PhD + 2 years research experience minimum) implemented by the European research council http://erc.europa.eu/ with a budget of 7.5 billion euros over 7 years (2007-2013). This program gives researchers financial independence to fund a group both starting or advanced researchers.

The People programme http://cordis.europa.eu/fp7/people/home_en.html is concerned with training, mobility and career development. This has an overall budget of 4.7 billion euros until 2013. The Marie Curie Actions are under this programme, enabling mobility of individuals.

The Capacities programme http://cordis.europa.eu/fp7/capacities/home_en.html has a budget of 4.0 billion euros - this programme aims to enhance research and innovation capacities throughout Europe, this is how a group/institute can obtain funding for workshops, conferences, summer schools or building up networks and research infrastructure. This enables international collaboration also.
