An enshrouded Lazarus stands in the doorway of his tomb following his resurrection. Possessing an image of the Raising of Lazarus expressed the central Christian belief in resurrection, and also served to ward off death itself. The repetition of this scene on other bowls and lamps shows that molds were used for an early form of mass production.

This drawing is related to a painting showing an incident during the "tulipomania" in Holland in the 1630s, when speculators drove the price of tulips to unprecedented heights, only to have the market suddenly collapse. To control the supply, the government ordered the destruction of the tulip beds. Here, a Dutch aristocrat defends his prize tulip from the government soldiers. The painting, "The Tulip Folly" (1882, Walters 37.2612), has been in the Walters since 1983. Gérôme frequently sold drawings that either replicated his most famous works or were variations on them. In this instance, the drawing has been squared to transfer the design, confirming that it is a preliminary study rather than a replica.

The Virgin, her hands joined before her breast in an attitude of mourning, is represented as a half-length figure, facing three-quarters to the left. She wears a cobalt-blue robe, white wimple and a full blue mantle covering her head. The edge of the mantle was originally inscribed in gilding with words of the Ave Maria prayer, now effaced. Her sky-blue nimbus has a jeweled edge. The background is green, inscribed in faded gilt letters SCA MA and surrounded by a scalloped line in gilding, also very faded. The purple border following the rounded top is studded with raised "jewels" over spangles of foil. The enamel is mounted in a gilt metal frame. The style of the drawing recalls that of Walters 44.149, and suggests a rather late date in the production of the Nardon Pénicaud workshop.

Images pairing horses and monkeys are common because monkeys were believed to keep horses calm within a stable. Monkeys are often shown as grooms for horses. On this kozuka, a horse is shown galloping across the front. On the reverse, a framed inset depicts a monkey tied to a poll. The artist's signature is within this inset, which contributes to its resemblance to a painting. The background of the kozuka is worked in a fish egg ("nanako") pattern.

The Yale-trained Marciari-Alexander, 45, serves as the San Diego Museum of Art's head curator and starts her new post April 1. She will succeed Gary Vikan, who is retiring in June after 27 years at the Walters and who helped the museum become a national leader in rethinking the traditional role of arts institutions. We looked at people in senior positions at other museums who have a demonstrated history of leadership. Baltimore’s Walters Art Museum Names New Director By CAROL VOGEL Julia Marciari-Alexander, deputy director for curatorial affairs at the San Diego Museum of Art, has been appointed executive director of the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore. Ms. Marciari-Alexander is replacing Gary Vikan, who is stepping down after more than 27 years at the Walters, 18 of them as its director. The board approved Ms. Marciari-Alexander’s appointed on Wednesday morning. “We were looking for a dynamic leader to enhance our mission of bringing art and people together in Baltimore and beyond through education, exhibitions and innovative use of technology, and we’ve found that and more in Julia,’’ Ellen Bernard, a Walters trustee who was chair of the search committee, said in a statement.

“I have a strong sympathy for all women who have struggled and suffered. For this reason the Virgin Mary is very dear to me,” Mary Edmonia Lewis told a reporter in Rome in 1871. These words reveal the faith of an American sculptor, famous in the two decades after the Civil War. Today, Lewis is re-emerging as the first African-American sculptor to win worldwide respect. Lewis was born around 1844, perhaps in upstate New York, of a Haitian father of African descent and a mother of Ojibwa origin. Historians are still searching for records of her birth and early life, but it is known that both of her parents died by the time she was 9, and that her education was financed by an older brother who became wealthy in the gold rush. She had every obstacle in front of her: She was African-American and Native American, she was a woman, and she was a Catholic in an era when there was widespread prejudice against the Catholic Church.

The Walters Art Museum presents New Eyes on America: The Genius of Richard Caton Woodville, an exhibition with richly-painted depictions of daily life created during the transformative years prior to the American Civil War. During a tragically short career, the Baltimore-born and European-trained Woodville (1825–55) engaged with issues that dominated American society, including war, intergenerational communication, and new technologies such as the telegraph and penny press. Woodville was born of a prominent Baltimore family, living blocks from the Walters, and trained in Düsseldorf, Germany, where he conducted his professional career. On view from March 10–June 2, 2013, this is the first monographic Woodville exhibition since 1967, and it travels to the Mint Museum in Charlotte, N.C. June 30–Nov. 3, 2013.

At home in her basement, with a mannequin head, she meticulously re-creates the hairstyles of ancient Rome and Greece. Ms. Stephens is a hairdo archaeologist. Basically, she has set out to prove that the ancients probably weren't wearing wigs after all. "This is my hairdresserly grudge match with historical representations of hairstyles," says Ms. Stephens, who works at Studio 921 Salon & Day Spa, which offers circa 21st-century haircuts. Her coiffure queries began, she says, when she was killing time in the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore back in 2001. A bust of the Roman empress Julia Domna caught her eye. "I thought, holy cow, that is so cool," she says, referring to the empress's braided bun.

Walters Art Museum Acquires Major Work by African American Artist

January 29, 2013 Baltimore—In 2002, philanthropists Eddie and C. Sylvia Brown created The Brown Challenge Grant, donating $500,000 to the Walters Art Museum, to be matched by the museum, creating a $1 million fund for the purchase of art by 18th-, 19th- and early 20th-century African American artists. The Walters has purchased a number of works by African American artists through this fund, including works by Edward Mitchell Bannister (1828-1901), Edmonia Lewis (1844-1907) and Henry Ossawa Tanner (1859-1937). The Walters has purchased the final major work associated with this grant, River Scene (1868), a serene landscape by Richard Seldon Duncanson (1821-1872), which is now on view in the Walters’ 19th-Century Galleries. “The Brown Challenge Grant has allowed the Walters to continue its commitment to increase diversity within its permanent collection,” said Walters Executive Director Gary Vikan.

By Philip Kennicott, Published: January 25 Looking back, over the seismic shifts of early-20th-century art, the Pre-Raphaelite painters of 19th-century England seem guilty of every crime of retrograde aesthetics: They were sentimental and traditional, treacly and decorative. They were obsessed with willowy ginger lads and lasses languishing in historical dress-up, and lavished attention on hyper-precise details of wallpaper, costume and foliage. One of the most anticipated exhibitions this season, at the National Gallery of Art (Feb. 17), will take a new look at all that, and argue something else: that the Pre-Raphaelites were in fact part of an avant-garde movement, more unruly in their colors and design than they are given credit for, and keenly alert to the social conditions and rapidly changing world of Victorian England. The exhibition mixes art and design, and is likely to be a crowd pleaser.
