A new IBM Rational license key administration and reporting tool is currently under development and will be showcased at both VoiCE and Innovate this year!

At VoiCE, a presentation in the ED session on June 2^nd will showcase the license usage reporting functionality of the new tool. Here, we will present and request customer feedback on the peak usage, peak denial, token distribution, charge back, availability, user based, and license expiration reports the tool will provide.

At Innovate, a pedestal demonstration of the new server administrator functionality - including the capacity to view all your served licenses across all your license servers (including both RLKS and JTS), start and stop a license server, and monitor license server status (Stopped / Running / Unreachable) - and the reporting capacities of the new server administrator and reporting tool will be presented. Why collaboration is so critical to reduce time to market

When I first heard about collaboration for development teams it seemed to have very soft benefits, and was
hard to quantify. But I've been thinking about it in the context of lean, and realised collaboration is
critical to improving a development process - and collaborative tools may well be the key to unlocking
that improvement.

When you think about software development in terms of a lean process, then an average team will have a
process efficiency of about 20% ( i.e. only 20% of the time taken to deliver a feature is spent on useful
work or another way of thinking about this - 80% of the time is wasted in waiting and hand offs).

So when you start applying tooling to this environment you have to ask yourself what is going to give you
the biggest improvement - either automating tasks for the individual practitioner, or trying to tackle the
waste and hand offs ?

Just looking at the numbers, it's obvious you're going to get less return by focusing on tools that just
help individual productivity e.g. If you implemented a set of non-integrated tools which boosted
individual productivity by 20%, then the piece of work which was taking 100 days is now taking 96 (you
still have 80 days waste, and you've reduced the 20 days to 16). Contrast this with tooling and process
changes which focused on the hand offs and waste, and which reduced that by 20%, and that 100 day task is
now taking 84 days instead ( you're still doing 20 days work, but you've reduced the waste to 64 days).

The diagram below gives a view of what happens when you dramatically reduce the non-productive time -
naturally the time to market/ development time is dramatically reduced too.

Now in reality you obviously want to automate more (to reduce the time taken to do the work), and
also collaborate more to reduce the waste and hand offs. But these numbers make it apparent
why collaboration is so critical - to make a significant impact on your process efficiency and delivery
time, you have to really tackle the hand offs and other sources of waste - and collaborative, integrated
tools are what help you and your team to do that.

Although Medical Device regulations do not enforce a fixed life cycle model, activities are presented in a sequential manner hinting at a waterfall process. Meanwhile, for a decade or more, software teams have benefitted from Agile development methods. There’s a number of Medical Device manufacturers that have adopted Agile practices while keeping development in compliance with regulations, but conflicts arise and decisions have to be taken in favor of agility or formality. AAMI’s new Technical Information Report (TIR45) gives guidance on the use of Agile in medical device development. This TIR adds new insights on the subject by mapping IEC 62304 (medical device software dev) activities into the Agile development process.

We are constantly striving to reduce the time it takes for you to gain value from our products and solutions. The sooner you can effectively deploy a Rational development environment, the faster you can start using it and gaining value! We are pleased to announce a number of initiatives around improving your deployment experience:

A new Deployment wiki on Jazz.net has been established to be the single repository for all additional Rational deployment guidance and best practices for customers, partners and Rational staff.

A broadening of the existing Enterprise Deployment Design Partner Program and VoiCE events to focus on all aspects of Deployment including: planning, designing, installing, configuring, integrating, upgrading, licensing, monitoring, troubleshooting and administering Rational environments.

A dedicated Rational Deployment for Administrators track at Innovate Orlando 2013.

We wanted to make the new wiki visible as soon as possible to get your feedback and engagement. We have established the overall governance, management, wiki structure, section leadership teams, and started to migrate and develop new content. However, there are many topics that are under construction or still to do, so we do need your help!

Read access will be completely unrestricted, allowing search engine indexing, such as Google. However, the wiki will be moderated with write access controlled by three groups consisting of deployment experts (technical leaders and senior editors), practitioners (Rational Administrators and Tool Specialists from customer and partners, and Rational staff) and the full Jazz.net community. Initially most of the wiki pages will only be editable by the expert technical leaders and senior editors. However, over time we will add more and more pages for deployment practitioners and the full Jazz.net community to contribute towards, and open up some of the initial pages for wider contribution. Regardless of write access, many pages will allow open questions and comments, and we have established a Deployment wiki RTC project for management, ideas, requests and problems. Membership of the deployment expert and practitioner groups will be based upon nominations via the process described in the wiki access control topic. So have a look, nominate yourself or colleagues and get involved!

If you haven’t yet, we would encourage you to register for the Enterprise Deployment of Rational Tools (ED) VoiCE session at Innovate, which will be held on Sunday, June 2nd in Orlando, Florida. As part of this session, you will influence Rational’s direction on the broad aspects of deployment strategy (including installation and licensing), product & solution deployment direction, and deployment guidance. In particular, we plan to demo and solicit feedback on the following topics:

Rational Deployment Strategy and Key Initiatives including IBM Installation Manager and Common Licensing 2013 Roadmaps

Interview with our returning IBM Champion - Alex Ivanov from Raytheon

Alex Ivanov is a Senior Software Engineer II with Honors at Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems. Alex has more than 10 years experience as a Requirements (DOORS) Database Manager supporting a large scale distributed requirements database in the aerospace and defense industry, specializing in writing re-usable DXL, training, user support and consulting with programs to ensure they get the most out of their use of IBM Rational DOORS. Alex in an IBM Certified Deployment Professional DOORS v9 and has been recognized as a three time IBM Champion (2011, 2012, 2013). In 2011 Alex was elected the President of the New England Rational User Group.

1. How does it feel to be a returning IBM Champion?

I’m honored to be selected for this honor for the 3rd consecutive year. Ironically enough it was in 2010 that I 1st started to reach out across Raytheon the best practices that my team and I had developed around how to effectively use IBM Rational DOORS. I thought to myself, we have hundreds of programs at Raytheon that use DOORS and yet not everyone is aware of how to make the best use of the tool and more over the customizations that have been developed through custom DXL to make it even easier to use DOORS. This was the beginning of my vision to standardize the way requirements are managed at Raytheon, and little did I know it would lead to discovering my true passion.

2. Can you tell us something about what you do at Raytheon?

I lead team of engineers that maintain our customizations for how to effectively use DOORS and moreover I consult with programs all across the company on how to best architect their DOORS database and take advantage of the automation we have available. I’m most passionate about reaching out to others across the organization that are eager to improve on how systems engineering uses DOORS to their maximum advantage. I’m happy to say that over the past 3 years I’ve been able to spread our best practices across numerous Raytheon locations across the US, and have been able to do wonders with social media through the use of wiki pages, blogs, communities and generating training videos.

3. What are your thoughts on managing requirements effectively?

A tool is just a tool unless you have a sound process and training to go along with it. It is much more important to get people to understand the process and how the tooling helps them do their job, than to simply rely on the tool to solve all their problems. I believe it’s very important to have a sound process in place and certainly if there are best practices to leverage on how to use tools people should strive to take advantage of them, without losing sight of their process and what they are responsible for delivering. I can’t stress how important it is to determine your project architecture and the relationships of what you will be managing in DOORS, it might seem time consuming at 1st but it will save you a lot of time down the line.

4. So, how long have you been using Rational DOORS?

I started using DOORS in 2000 which is when I began my career at Raytheon. At the time I was a software developer who had just graduated from Boston University and DOORS was the tool which had the software requirements to which I had to develop code for. I believe at the time it was DOORS version 4.0 and I can certainly say that the tool has come a long way since then.

5. That's a long time; in your opinion, what are some of the greatest assets of the product and well, the pain points?

Without a doubt one of the greatest assets is the ability to customize the product for your process. Having said that I believe it’s very important to have a solid understanding of the systems engineering process and a clear understanding of how to architect your project for success. Only once you have a reusable architecture can you turn the focus on how to write reusable DXL to compliment your project template and architecture. As far as the pain points, certainly one of them has to be how manual it is to manage the database, whether it be attributes, views or access without custom DXL scripting it would be rather time consuming to carry out many tasks.

6. Do you have some tips or tricks to share with the DOORS users out there?

I’m happy to say that there are a ton of free resources online and I would highly recommend people take the time to watch webcasts, join a local Rational user group and just network with your peers who have their own experiences to share. If you aren’t a member already I encourage everyone to join the Global Rational User Group, their monthly newsletters are a great source of information and many presentations are archived for viewing right on the site. Another great resource for DOORS and DXL are the developerWorks forums, having asked and answered questions on the Rational DOORS DXL forum I highly recommend it. Numerous webcasts are available on 321Gang's website, Managing DOORS: The Administrator’s Toolbox is one where I take you through some examples on how to write reusable DXL to make it much easier to manage attributes and views.

7. What advice do you give to the budding DOORS administrators?

I would encourage everyone to find a mentor, this can be anyone that you look up to and just ask them questions, I know that I would not be where I am today had it not been for the mentoring and support of numerous people in my life and I am forever grateful to them. Something I have learned throughout the years is that it’s important to ask questions, and don’t assume the person who is asking you to do something has the right answers. As you gain experience you’ll be able to tailor the solution for your customers and they will thank you for it. It’s unbelievable how many resources are available online for learning, I’m a big fan of watching and creating training videos and Youtube has numerous channels I’d recommend subscribing to, a couple of which are: IBMRational and IBMJazz.
I believe it’s very important to always want to improve, whether this be in your personal or professional life. I encourage everyone to grab a book on any subject that is of interest to them, you’d be amazed how much you will learn. Workaround: Links from requirements to test scripts are no longer created when you associate a test script step with a requirement

In Rational Quality Manager Version 4.0, when you associate a requirement with individual test script steps, a back link is created in the Requirements Management application to the parent test script. In Rational Quality Manager Version 4.0.1, the integration with the Requirements Management application has been changed to not create back links from requirements to test scripts.

Workaround: Unexpected error when running repotools-jazz - refactorRequirements if the linked Test Case has no description

In Rational Quality Manager versions earlier than 3.0.1.2, when you migrate work-item-based requirements to Rational Requirements Composer, the migration fails with error CRJAZ1728E if the requirement is linked to a test case that has an empty "Description."
