Just a little etiquette lesson. It was good advice given to me and so I am going to pass it on. Please take note people that have been bugging me for free advice, services, et al, lately:

Do something for someone before asking for something.

I wish someone had told me this before I made some mistakes early on. I might have burned a few bridges with my over zealousness and desire to know more.

It's really simple. Actually, I was originally told to do THREE things for someone before asking. Those can be little things. Bring them a cup of coffee. Pass on a article that you think they might find useful. Heck, throw them a compliment. Compliments go A LONG way.

It's not like you have to buy them, but for god's sake. You're asking them for advice on how you should do something, who you should contact, what you should do to further your career. Offer something FIRST.

We're all busy people, and by that I mean EVERYONE on the entire planet. We all have tasks, goals, jobs, deadlines, et al. So anytime you ask someone for something you are interrupting their flow.

Some forums are made for that. I run a monthly screenwriters group. I get asked business and career advice from the start of that meeting until its over and I love to share with those people at that venue. Its my job; my task; my goal; and my pleasure at that particular time.

But if you are going to do a drive by on me via email or on the street or where ever respect me enough to at least offer to buy me a Grande Mocha Frappachino (I don't do coffee in the summer time heat of Arizona). I may turn you down on the offer, but I'll respect that you took the time and made the offer and most likely help you out.

But, under no circumstance, ask for help/advice but refuse to share any details and keep it all hush-hush, super-duper, top secret. That just flat out turns me off. You want a budget or help with your budget? Then tell me what the project is. Get over yourself. There are no incredibly unique ideas, only incredibly unique execution on those ideas.

And definitely DON'T ask me for an introduction without giving details. I won't do that to anyone and I don't expect anyone to do that with me. You want me to turn over someone I have a direct relationship with, then I want details. I'm not turning over a contact with even a c-list actor if your super secret project is another take on porn and I'm not taking that risk unless I know what the project is and if they might be interested (hey, some c-listers might do porn if its discreet, Cinemax, soft-porn).

Come on people, its really simple. It's been around for centuries: Do Unto Others...

The Abducted hits 118!

For what it's worth, THE ABDUCTED (formerly MATCH.DEAD) has hit 118 on the IMDB film rankings. This outranks quite a few films released this summer from the studios.

It all started last Friday, the 3rd of July, when nearly 20 alerts from Google came roaring into our mailbox here at Infinite Spectrum Productions. These were emails packed with people talking about the film. We weren't aware of the release even happening that weekend.

We had to wait out the 4th of July weekend to see what was happening and get a hold of people. By Monday, three days later, when the IMDB rankings came out we had shot up to 118. Our YouTube trailer had also gotten about 20,000 views.

And a quick look at our site logs shows something interesting. We had an increase in site traffic this week of more than 5000%. While the release of the film occured overseas, more than 50% of that increase in traffic came from the United States. Yes, overseas reviews result in domestic demand for the film.

So you'd think a U.S. distributor would want to snap this baby up. More than 50% of the people that want to watch this film worldwide are in the United States... and it hasn't even released in the U.S. yet.

Well, we'll be shooting some scenes in the next week from various projects. Our crew on these scenes is phenomenal and I can't wait to get started. We're already prepping and looking forward to the first weekend of May.

On that same note, Star Quest is off to the distributor next week. It's good to put another film behind us and be crewing up for the next project.

So, here we are, at the cusp of the next step in Infinite Spectrum Productions. We're trying to take that next step up the ladder to success. Great meetings with new team members are yielding some great possibilities.

New films in development. Two television programs as well. Oh, and another music video coming up in a month as well.

My Innocence Begins Today - Wrapped

We just finished shooting the video for Alex Arndt's My Innocence Begins Today. This video is about Alex's awakening into the vegan experience. In an effort to both show respect for the choice and give the cast and crew a little insight into the lifestyle, we went vegan for three days.

There are two things I'd like to say about this:

1) The food, provided by Chef Jason Wyrick of Devil Spice and Vegan Culinary Experience, was incredible. Full of flavor and more than enough to fill anyone up. Complements about the food continued all weekend long. Thanks Jason! Anyone that says Vegan's don't know how to eat hasn't done it right.

2) It's damn hard. Going out to eat is nigh on impossible unless you just want to eat a house salad. It's an adventure of ordering a meal off the menu but removing all the items that you can't eat. Now I'm known for taking a while to make up my mind when looking at a menu, but this weekend it was nigh on impossible. Even the "vegetarian" dishes aren't really. Luckily Alex and Kay set a really good example and we tried our best to follow their lead.

I think all of us on the cast and crew came away with a better understanding of the song and lifestyle choice.

Star Quest: the Odyssey is wrapped. Well, technically we wrapped Sunday. Hope you enjoy the poster. There is great production value in this one, folks. Great team... and we did it for FAR TOO LITTLE MONEY. Let's not make this a trend. We're trying to make a living at this, not a hobby.

On that note we've got two music videos coming in the next month. Both will be directed by our own Kevin R. Phipps. He's a creative visionary and real pro. We're teaming up with two different DP's for these as well. Next month looks to be as busy as last.

Then it's on to... well, its a secret... for now.

I'm way behind, eh? With all the social media networks and communications stuff, you'd think it would be easier to keep up, but it just makes more things. Did I tweet today? Did I update my status on Facebook? MySpace? Plaxo? et al. Too much to do and too little time.

We started actually FILMING Star Quest yesterday. Great performances all the way around. Great sets. Great G&E team. Great everybody. We were a well organized and oiled machine that, yes, had a few bumps, but got 12 pages done in under 12 hours.

This team is great and I'm looking forward to working with them further. Stay tuned and you might get to see some pictures from the set..

STARQUEST: ODYSSEY: This feature film is a space opera set in our own universe after an interstellar war and the first tenuous mission between former warring worlds. Distribution has already been determined. Look for a release early this summer.

I woke up early this morning and couldn't get back to sleep with the realization that it's Christmas time.

Duh, you may say, we all knew that. The tree is in the corner. The neighbors lights are on. The children are nestled all snug in their beds...

I'm an adult. Christmas has been about my kids since they were born. But this year, God help me, I'm struggling with that. And waking up with an anxiety about Christmas shouldn't be, but it is.

I thought I was over it. I thought I was back to everything is normal. I thought ... I guess I thought I was different. This will be the first Christmas without my father, damnit, and I'm going to miss him.

I can't imagine what my mother has been going through all these weeks leading up to it. Mom, I'm sorry.

So I'm a shit. It just sunk in. This is a year of firsts for all of us and, well, it sucks. It just sucks.

So if I forget to smile, forget to cheer, forget to say "Merry Christmas" know that it's not personal... or, well, yes it is. This too shall pass.

But for now, it just fucking hurts.

Fathers are indestructible, or so I think it's supposed to be.

From childhood you look up to your father with eyes of wonder, respect, and admiration. He's there to protect you. Nothing can hurt him and, therefore, nothing can hurt me.

I was one of the lucky ones. Someone with a father that was there no matter what happened. Someone that stood by you in all your troubles and didn't ask how or why you screwed up just was there to help you pick up the pieces and encourage you while you fixed it.

My father was not just my Dad, either. He was father to dozens if not hundreds of kids. When we were young we'd bring home stray dogs and cats. When we got older we'd bring home stray kids.

Kids that didn't have a great family life were drawn to our household, our stability, and my father. He was always there with a friendly smile and encouraging word, even when he was chasing off some idiot boy that was thinking with the wrong head around my sister. He'd still welcome them back into the house... with a stern glance.

And, as much as you might think otherwise, they respected him for it.

That was my Dad. He was everyone's Dad and I loved him for it and will miss him, forever.

Time stopped today

Time stopped today. That's the only way I can describe it. Today my father passed away and everything stopped. In my mind I tell myself I need to worry about work, family, money, anything and everything, but I can't. I just can't get the images out of my mind.

Just a week ago I sat with him, talked to him, laughed, read, and watched TV. Just a week ago it seemed like we had lots of time. But during the last week a lot of things changed.

My father had been living with MDS, a blood disease, for three years and had lived more than 2 and a half years past when doctors said he would. He was a stuborn cuss, but this week it all caught up with him.

I know life goes on and am doing the best to make sure it does for my wife, my familiy, and my mother, but, for me, time has stopped.

The clock will start up again, I just can't say when.

Social Marketing in Social Media

It's rough out there. We all know that. Jobs are scarce. Money is tight. And yet, we're all still making film, right? So how do you stand out when you don't have any money left in your advertising budget?

Social Media.

Over the last few years social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, Flickr, YouTube... maybe you've heard of a few of these? There are dozens more out there. Each with a particular audience or delivery method. They run the gamut from discussion to sharing to microblogging to life streaming. Did I lose you?

Good. If you said yes, then you've got a lot to learn, but I've got a lot to teach. If you said no, then you're helping me make my point.

Social Media is all about, you guessed it, being social. Communicating with other people. Passing on your ideas and collecting other people's.

You've already started if you are reading this. Blogging is a great place to start. With free blog sites available, what's stopping you? Check out WordPress or Blogger right now and get started.

But you need to do more than just type content into the great beyond, you need to engage your audience. Social Media is a two way street. So if you are tempted to turn off comments: don't. Allow people to express their viewpoints. And answer their questions. If you don't communicate with your audience then you've lost before you began.

That all said, blogs are just a small part of social media.

How about YouTube? The obvious solution here is, upload your trailer. But why wait until you have a trailer? Upload footage from your auditions (get those waivers), storyboards, interviews with the writer, director, leads? Take them on a scouting trip. Remember, its about community. You're building one that's going to follow you from the beginning.

Once production begins, take your audience along for the ride. I know, its hard to do anything during production besides be on set. So use Twitter.

When we started production of MATCH.DEAD we took our audience with us to the set. Throughout the day we would send text messages from the set to Twitter, and hence our followers, to keep them apprised of what was happening. Throw additional sites like twixtr and twiddeo into the mix and you can upload photos and cell phone videos as it happens. When we added twixtr to our feed, our Twitter friends really picked up. They were now able to watch us on the set.

What if your film is in the can? You've got a long lull as you sit in the editting room. Don't forget your fans during this dead time. The biggest problem is, editting isn't exciting. There isn't anything sexy about sitting in front of an editting bay for hours on end (sorry, all you cutters out there).

So how do you keep your audience engaged? Contests, photos, etc. You held stuff back I hope. Start engaging them with production photos, stories from the set, etc. This is where your social networking sites really come into play.

And don't forget to cross post.

Put up a blog entry and advertise it with a link to your Twitter fans.

Upload a photo on your social networking groups on Facebook and MySpace, then embed it into a blog entry with a link back.

Make it easy for your fans to move back and forth between all your different areas. DO NOT make them look for you.

Now the film is done. Its out to distributors or you've already sold it (big congratulations, BTW). What now? Well, you certainly aren't done. Tell everyone. Build hype. Remember, your fans will stick with you from project to project, so don't abandon them just because you've moved on to your next project. Keep building that fan base.

We recently ran a promotion on Twitter for our completed film MATCH.DEAD (BTW, any distributors out there, we're still shopping). We promised everyone that responded to us with a public request to view our movie that we would invite them to a special, limited, online screening. The key thing to this is the way that Twitter works. They had to make the request to us like so:

@match_dot_dead I want to see the free online screening of MATCH.DEAD. Sign me up!

By doing this they advertised our film to all of their friends as well as telling us they wanted to see the film. We doubled our fan base on Twitter in just a week with this promotion. That's called viral advertising. Additionally, they responded with glowing reviews in the same public forum. You can't beat that!

Be creative. That's the key. Chris Brogan points out 50 Ways Marketers Can use Social Media to Improve Their Marketing. Take from this list, but also come up with some fresh new ones.

You know your product. You know your audience. Now figure out a way to make it win-win for everyone.

Just got back from seeing Religuous staring Bill Mahr. Let me start by saying its EXACTLY what I expected. It was funny. Bill's final rant was intelligent and well structured. It was what Bill does well. What he's done for 20 years in standup and what he does on his HBO television show.

What it wasn't, was a documentary. Bill started off by saying he was seeking answers, but he really never asked any questions. He had an agenda and a message he wanted to get across and so that was what he delivered.

He focused on the extremists and shot holes in their personal philosophies. He is obviously informed and well educated on the topic, countering people's opinions and misguided facts effortlessly, but he really didn't discover or seek out anything. He came to no realization. He just made his point.

I'm starting to get cynical and I can't imagine how some of you keep from getting there.

WRITER/DIRECTOR with great properties and first class actors seeks, professional, experienced producer. As most creatives, I would much rather focus on the content rather than the commerce of filmmaking.

So without flowery words, and a remarkably well written sales pitch, let me get to the point...

I need a producer, with experience in raising capital, contacts within the industry, and the right amount of vision and madness, to allow me to create the type of movies that will be both entertaining and profitable. I am going to do great things in film, be with me at the beginning.

Fair compensation is negotiable, you get me the money, I'll create the product, and we'll make history.

What makes this guy think he's anymore great than the other dozen people that sent me the same thing today? If you want to work in the movie business then LEARN the movie business. Go out and raise money for your film. If you can't raise enough money for your budget, adjust the movie and make one for the amount of money you can raise. Baby steps. Do one, sell it, now make a bigger one, etc.

Sure, if you can convince someone to do all the work for ya, that's great. But you should also be aware that you won't own anything when its done. Its the producer that makes money AFTER the fact on the film. The director gets his paycheck during the film making process.

Yep, Hollywood invades the web yet again. Ashton Kutcher presented at the TechCrunch50 yesterday his latest revenue stream: blahgirls.com. They talk about the interactivity of his property and how innovative it is. What is it really?

Another Hollywood funded video series.

Is it good? That's a matter of opinion. Think of it as the Southpark Girls and you've pretty much nailed the content (and the look). Although its not quite as irreverent.

Is it innovative and worthy of the Techcrunch50? Nah, not really. They have a unique feedback system that analyzes your content and sends you personalized messages back from the girls in the video, but it looks like its just a high-end version of magic eight ball.

But like I warned, Hollywood is coming and with the access to advertisers and deep pockets you can be assured that blahgirls.com will be a success. Now, Ashton, if you want to help fund some other projects outside of Hollywood, that would be great. There is a lot of great content that could get off the ground at a fraction of the standard Hollywood spend.

YouTube 2.0

It might be premature to coin this phrase, but I think we're actually inside, albeit subtly, the YouTube 2.0 generation.

YouTube started in February 2005. For those readers that don't know what YouTube is (and I find it hard to believe you found me but not them, YouTube is a video sharing website where users can upload, view and share video clips. The sharing of video started with simple, home made video and pirated television clips. Soon, though, people began making series directly for the web. Much of these were amateur stories, but the quality grew. Soon new personalities were becoming household names as professionals outside of the system began to emerge online: Ask a Ninja, WallStrip, and the Totally Rad Show.

But now, Hollywood has come in full force. Oh, don't get me wrong, they've been testing the waters for the better part of a year but friend of all fandom, Joss Whedon of Buffy the Vampire and Firefly fame, came out with a very high profile webseries this summer: Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog.

And this is the beginning of the end for the YouTube 1.0 generation.

Don't get me wrong, Dr. Horrible is a great television series episode. Shot like a web series, this little show has a budget and cast that no Gen 1.0 show could touch for its entire season, let alone for a single episode (OK, to be fair they cut it into three segments).

Time to wake up, because Hollywood is on the web and here to stay.

I definitely shouldn't be the first to talk on this subject, but, damnit, take care of yourself. Don't take your health for granted. If you don't feel well, stand up for yourself and don't let your doctor off the hook.

In the past two weeks I've come face to face with this issue.

Two weeks ago my sister, at age 35, was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer. She's keeping a positive attitude and has already started chemotherapy. But it all could have been caught earlier save for a doctor that dismissed her patient's requests as neurotic and borderlining on hypochondria.

Both of our grandparents died of breast cancer. So when my sister started asking her OB for a mammogram five years ago her doctor agreed, right? No she refused. Her insurance refused and her doctor refused because "it wasn't necessary" at her age. She asked for one at each checkup, but was always refused for the same moronic reasons.

A simple test that could have caught the problem early on, well before stage three (for those that don't know, there are only four stages).

Ladies, and gentlemen, stand up for your health. Demand what you deserve. Don't let some stupid insurance company determine what is good for you.

Which brings me to my second point:

My father, just two days ago, was diagnosed with congestive heart failure. You see, he's had MDS for almost three years now. Frankly, that's far longer than most doctors expected and we've been blessed. Two weeks ago he started developing edema and feeling lousy, but he didn't say anything. People noticed he seemed tired and listless, but when asked he said he felt fine.

Turns out he was bleeding internally, just a slow seepage, that built up around his heart and he developed congestive heart failure. In a healthy individual the problem would have been easy to fix, but MDS lowers you immune system, red blood cell, and platelet counts. He can't clot (hence the seepage). You don't do surgery on someone that can't stop bleeding, now do you? But at this stage they had no choice.

He is doing better, but is being treated with kid gloves. We can only speculate, but ff he had just stopped trying to be strong and muscle through it, if he had said "Something's just not right" 2-4 weeks earlier when he started feeling bad it might have been different.

Don't be stubborn. Don't be brave. If you feel bad or something just doesn't seem right, go see your doctor and stand up for your health.

Just got back from DIY Days in LA. Met some great people, had some insightful conversations, and sat through great presentations on DIY (Do-it-yourself) distribution and audience aggregation. They are coming to a city near you (they are on their way to San Francisco and then heading east, final stop looks like its London).

Best of all, it's free. When do you get a day long event on "fund :: create :: distribute :: sustain" for free? Which brings me to my last point on the subject: "fund :: create".

They really didn't cover those. It was mostly about different DIY distribution and audience development models. Don't get me wrong, there was a great amount of information on the latter. I had thought I was wanting to learn about more DIY funding (more then the obvious: go into debt) but the topics on finding, building, and sustaining your audience were also valuable.

One thing it seemed a lot of the attendees wanted was a magic bullet. Let me be really clear: there is no magic bullet. Even if there was by now it would be so overused as to be ineffective. It still comes down to persistence and work.

Anyway, I highly recommend the series if its coming through your town. Also, check out the website for transcripts and updates from the conference.
