Dig Into Reading This Summer at the Library
Dig a little deeper and you’ll discover a world of interesting things beneath your feet. Children and teens can visit the St. Francis Library this summer and register for the summer reading program, which has the theme: Dig Into Reading! Our free program has an underground theme this year. Registration begins June 3 at 9:30 a.m.

Just keep track of your reading this summer and you will be “buried” in prizes. Prizes will include coupons from many restaurants and family-friendly places that are near you. Summer reading is essential so kids can retain hard-earned reading skills up until school begins in fall. It’s a great way to read fun books, and try new series and types of books. We’ll also bring you science projects on dinosaurs, construction vehicles, gardening, insects, volcanoes, underground animals, rocks, and much more. Register for storytimes and art projects, and enjoy our amazing performers. This year you can be thrilled by juggler Steve Girman, magician Matthew Morgan, animal expert David Stokes, bubbleologist Karl Debelack, the Milwaukee Dog Training Club, Kohl’s Wild Theater, and musicians Fox and Branch. Families can watch movies and play board games and the Wii.

Teens can join the Teen Advisory Group, which plans awesome activities and helps advise what books and media they’d like us to add to the library collection. Some activities already planned include: anime and manga, marker tie dye, make a dirt cake and a pop top bracelet, a writer’s workshop, candy sushi, make your own ice cream, and more.

There are also book clubs to meet new people and talk about books that dig underground.

And every week there will be surprises, for example, you can go on a treasure hunt for a prize.

The St. Francis Library cares about your children and has planned programs to keep them reading and learning all summer. Keep your child’s mind active and ready for school in the fall, and have a great time while doing it. Remember, “Reading Rocks!”

Rosie did not set Joey's car on fire. Yes she was burning a pile of things he gave her in his driveway but she did not blow up his car. What other choice did she have when he showed up at a party with his new freshman girlfriend? It was supposed to show her passion and emotion, not land her a temporary restraining order. It's going to be a long summer if she can't see Joey, and her parents can not be happy about this either.

It's her next door neighbor Matty who has the best solution: road trip. He's driving out to Arizona with his friend Spencer and his older brother Logan, and Matty thinks Rosie should go with them. While it seems like a reward, Rosie sees this is punishment. 9 days in a car, with an itinerary decided by the boys she is traveling with. Her parents love Matty, he's like another son to them (and like another brother to Rosie). It's decided, the best place for Rosie is as far away from Jersey as they can get her, and this is her ticket out.

First it's frustrating. The music they listen to is mostly country. The stops are places Rosie would never dream of going, and she has to beg and plead to make any changes to the itinerary. After a quick scare in Nashville, Rosie decides to make the best of the situation. Spencer turns out to be a pretty good guy. Matty has always been her friend, while she hasn't always been the best friend to him. And Logan, well let's just say there's a spark between Logan and Rosie.

An unexpected road trip turns what could have been a disaster summer into a great summer for Rosie. She's really a good kid who just happened to obsess over the wrong guy. Geography is able to give her the space and time she needs to see that there is a lot more to life than just one guy.

A great first read for the summer, Jennifer Salvato Doktorski's How My Summer Went Up in Flames will appeal to readers looking for that first fun light read to start off beach or car trip reading season!

I'll see you @ the library!
Katie (Now reading The Fifth Wave by Rick Yancy!)

Milwaukee Public Library
Say Hello to Zinio

Today marks the debut of a whole new way for you to access some of your favorite magazines through the Milwaukee Public Library. We are excited to announce the library's subscription to Zinio Digital Magazines where you'll be able to access full color digital copies of exciting new and popular magazine titles.

To access Zinio, click this link to go to the Milwaukee County Federated Library System info page for the service. There you'll find links to the various Zinio apps, a step-by-step guide to setting up your Zinio account, a helpful video guide to setting up your account, a full list of the hundred-plus magazine titles you'll be able access, and even a list of answers to some common questions about using the new service.

So why try Zinio? Well there are more than a few great features. For one, you'll be able to access dozens of magazine titles from the comfort of your home (assuming you have a library card in good standing). There's no waiting list for these titles, either. You'll get instant, permanent access to any magazine you check out. Some of these titles even have added levels of interactivity and content that you can't get from a normal print magazine (National Geographic is a great example of this). So what are you waiting for? Get your accounts all created and start reading some digital magazines from Milwaukee Public Library via Zinio Digital Magazines!

Summer reading starts June 1st and runs though August 12th this year. Are you saving books to count towards your page total this summer? With titles like The Moon and Me by Sarah Dessen and Rick Yancy's 5th Wave coming out there are a lot of great new books to look forward to! Remember every 750 pages earns you an entry into our grand prize auction as well as "book bucks" that you can use at our silent prize auction.

Do you use an eReader or listen to audio books? Those count too- just look up the number of pages the book has and use those for your total! Hint: this information is in the library catalog, so if you listened to Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix you would have 870 pages to log! That's one full reading log plus 120 pages towards the next one!

Do you have reading that you have to do for school? Those books count! As long as the book is at your reading level you can count it!

I'll see you @ the library!
Katie (Now reading too many books! I've started at least 4 and have yet to finish one!)

Summer Reading is almost here! Until May 28th, check in with us every day for a Summer Reading Tip for families to make the most of all that down time during summer. Tip #1: Set simple goals for reading. Even when it's not all in one sitting, 20 minutes a day adds up quickly and makes an impact. (Parents: you can do this, too!)

It was fascinating talking with author Amy Timberlake on Thursday, about her new book "One Came Home". Her character lives in the Wisconsin Dells area in 1871, the year of the largest nesting of passenger pigeons ever recorded. Did you know that at one time there were so many passenger pigeons, that the sky could look like night when they flew around? They were hunted for food, and a shooter could hit 40 birds with one shot. Unfortunately, they are now extinct.

Talking with Amy Timberlake
It was fascinating talking with author Amy Timberlake on Thursday, about her new book "One Came Home".
Jeanne, who works at our circulation desk, recommends "Queue Tips: Discovering Your Next Great Movie" by Rob Christopher.

Jeanne says: This book is a quick, fun read! Of course, it is really a reference for expanding your film viewing and appreciation, but I read it cover to cover. The author encourages the reader to “take a look at you local library, or talk movies with your friendly neighborhood librarian” – or equally friendly circulation assistant! Best of all, while providing short critiques worthy of a learned film buff, it also refuses to take itself too seriously. Instead, it offers quirky lists of films not found in any "Best Of" rankings.

Staff Recommendations

Back then it was a much simpler affair than the hours-long, star-studded spectacular that we are familiar with today. The day started with a private brunch for about 270 people. Fifteen statues were presented that day, although the winners had been announced months earlier. There was a post-awards party at the Mayfair Hotel, where tickets sold for five dollars.

There are 2 divisions for our summer reading club and our summer programs for children and teens. One is birth through 5th grade (as of Fall 2013) and the second one is 6th grade through 12th grade (as of Fall 2013) So, it is always the grade the child is GOING INTO in fall that we consider.

There are two different flyers which are available in the library and on our website. There are two different Facebook Pages that will highlight and notify you of the respective events. The Children's Department Facebook Page for the birth through 5th grade events and the Teen Facebook Page for the 6th-12th grade events. There are two Google calendars on our respective website pages that have all our kids and teen events and can be printed out as well.

There are a lot of ways to keep informed about what's happening this summer! It is ALL available right now, so take a look!

West Allis Public Library
Book Review: Beautiful Music For Ugly Children by Kirstin Cronn-Mills

Gabe's dream is to be a radio DJ playing good music over the airwaves. His neighbor John got him a gig at the local radio station playing songs from 12-1 AM on Saturday night.

One little issue: Gabe was born Elizabeth and a “she”. Only a few people know him as Gabe, but with graduation on the horizon Gabe is looking forward to being Gabe full time. Things at school aren’t easy for Gabe, who answers to Liz and is bullied by some of the boys for looking so masculine. Then there is the issue of getting a job or applying to colleges when biologically you are “F” but in your heart and mind you are “M”.

Things at home aren’t that great with his parents still calling him “Liz” and at times not even looking at him. It’s good he has John, an old radio DJ, to be a friend and a mentor. Then there is Paige, Liz’s best friend who Gabe has a crush on. Moving forward with Paige might ruin their friendship, and Gabe doesn’t want to risk the one friendship he has.

Life is confusing enough at 18, figuring out what next after high school, especially if college isn’t the answer. Adding in not identifying with the gender he was born as makes things extra confusing for Gabe. Caught between childhood and adulthood as well as “female” and “male” in a world that makes you pick one, Gabe is navigating a world stuck on labels that he doesn’t fit. Wanting to be Gabe full time is not easy, and he does risk losing friends, family and fans.

Beautiful Music for Ugly Children gives a new perspective on going through these changes. Gabe’s story is a bit unusual for young adult fiction, as it deals with a teen that is transsexual, and one transitioning from female to male. (For a male to female perspective try reading Almost Perfect by Brian Katcher or Luna by Julie Anne Peters, although the character transitioning is not the main character.)

While this won’t be a book for every reader, those readers into music will love the mentions of rock history and royalty. Elvis plays a big part of in Gabe’s story too, so fans of the King will find trivia throughout the book. Put Beautiful Music for Ugly Children on your summer reading list if you love music or are curious on what it would be like to not identify as the gender you were born as.

I’ll see you @ the library!
Katie (Now reading How My Summer Went Up in Flames by Jennifer Salvato Doktorski)
