In the early 1960s, when very little attention was paid to Minimalist and Conceptual Art, Herb and Dorothy quietly began purchasing the works of unknown artists. Thirty years on, the Vogels managed to accumulate over 4,000 pieces, filling every corner of their living space from the bathroom to the kitchen. Their apartment was near collapse, holding way over its limit. Something had to be done. In 1992, the Vogels made headlines that shocked the art world: their entire collection was moved to the National Gallery of Art, the vast majority of it as an outright gift to the institution. Many of the works they acquired at modest prices appreciated so significantly that their collection became worth several million dollars, yet the Vogels never sold a single piece to breakdown the collection. The Vogels' discerning taste and magnanimity changed the face of contemporary art collecting. In 2007, James Stourton, the chairman of Sotheby's UK, included the Vogels in his acclaimed book, Great Collectors of Our Time: Art Collecting Since 1945. Stourton placed Herb and Dorothy among the top art collectors in the world, alongside Getty, Rockefeller and Mellon. While there are countless films that feature artists, there are few about art collectors. Herb and Dorothy provides a unique chronicle of the world of contemporary art from two unlikely collectors, whose shared passion and discipline defies stereotypes and redefines what it means to be a patron of the arts.

Synergie Aesthetic Massage at The Sanctuary

I love going to a Spa, whether I am getting a facial, a rub down, or a Synergy Aesthetic Massage, I feel like I just got a tune up. Last week I checked out The Sanctuary in Ocean Beach, San Diego.

I have been to many spas in the San Diego area and I have rave reviews for all but one. Each haven has its own charm, skill, and ambience, but Sanctuary was the first spa I entered feeling completely comfortable. When I arrive I am the only one there, this is a private spa. Small, tidy and appealing, I feel like the Spa is my own personal sanctuary (pun not intended) for the duration of my stay.

Two steps into the space I am greeted by Melissa, a delightful young woman who welcomes me as if I am a friend. Still she is very professional as well as affable when she sits with me before my session to discuss my health goals and describe the process of Synergie Aesthetic Massage.

I've been neglecting my pedicure. Truly, I have. I'm one of those people that are frequently cold, and as such I love, love, love to wear socks and closed toe shoes. Which I do for months on end, even here in Orange County.

However, now that the summer is arriving even I am having trouble not wearing sandals on occasion, which means I need to pay a bit of attention to my neglected toes! I've broken out my ped egg and cuticle remover, but I really needed some heavy duty moisture for my neglected feet.

File Your Uneven Nail Beds

Most of us have uneven nail beds (the part where the white tip meets the pink skin under your nail). Hence, when you’re filing, the automatic tendency is to shape to that curve. However, you can then end up with some nails squarish, other roundish, and others oval.

To avoid this common pitfall, simply file your nails before removing your polish! The nail polish blocks your sight line to the nail bed so you file based on shape alone.

If you’re someone who doesn’t paint your tips, practice filing based on shape alone… or just throw on a quick coat of polish just on the tips of your nails. Remove after filing and then follow with a good hand cream or oil (I recommend Jojoba Oil to strengthen nails and soften cuticles).

I've always been confounded by the Sedaris family. How is that both Amy and David managed to emerge from the same clan? That's just too much awesomeness for one household. I'm also shocked by how little attention they get. Imagine if Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking came from the same family? or David Byrne and Michael Stipe? We'd never stop talking about it. Today, I came across this 13" X 23 1/2" poster celebrating David Sedaris, and in my opinion no one deserves a poster more.
