5 Cool Things You Can Do With The New Web Form Generator

You want to quickly and easily create great-looking signup forms. And you want to do it without having to know HTML.

Makes sense to us. So the new Web Form Generator - coming out soon - aims to help you do exactly that.

Here are just a few ways you'll be able to customize the look of your forms to build your list faster and create a better new subscriber experience.

Put Your Form Labels Above, Beside or Inside Fields

Want to try putting the "Name" and "Email" labels above the boxes that subscribers fill out, instead of beside them?

Now you can choose how you want your labels aligned:

You can even put them inside the boxes if you want to - when subscribers click inside the field, we'll remove the label so they can type their name/email!

Add Color to Your Submit Buttons And Position Them Where You Want

Want your form's submit button to stand out and beg to be clicked? You got it.

Think that changing the colors and/or the location of it will help you get more conversions? Now you can find out.

Customize the look of your submit button - you can even add gradients to it to make it slicker:

and you can place it where you think it'll get clicked the most - left, center or right:

If you want to get scientific about it, split test the different colors or positions to see what gets you the most new subscribers!

Show Subscribers How to Confirm With Dynamic Thank You Pages

Want to use video on your thank you pages to increase confirmed opt-ins, but don't have the time or equipment to make it happen?

Use our video thank you pages to give each new subscriber precise instructions on how to confirm.

We'll even show them exactly what your confirm email looks like in their specific email program (Gmail, AOL, Yahoo, Hotmail, Outlook, Mac Mail, etc).

Collect Addresses With Smart Fields

Need to collect more than just name and email address? How about a postal address?

Now you can easily ask for an address in your forms:

You can then use that data to search and segment your list in AWeber (example: send an email to all of your subscribers in Pennsylvania), or export it so you can build relationships with your subscribers by postal mail.

Automatically Insert a Privacy Policy

We've talked before about the merits creating a privacy policy and linking it from your signup form to increase trust, but that's always been something you had to do on your own.

Now, just tell us to add a privacy policy to your form:

We'll add a link to a privacy policy we created for AWeber customers to use:

It reaffirms your commitment to delivering email to people who want to get it from you and shows people how easy it is to unsubscribe if they choose to do so.

See the privacy policy.

That's Not All

There are tons of ways to make your signup forms cooler and more appealing to subscribers (templates, anyone?). These are just a few examples.

What else can you do? You'll have to try the new Web Form Generator and find out for yourself...

You can also sign up for a webinar/demo of the new Web Form Generator scheduled for Tuesday, November 24th.
 Tweet This

How Easy Is It To Make A Web Form?

Forms suck.

Lets be honest, most forms are well... boring.

And creating the HTML for a web form is about as interesting as watching paint dry.

But, believe it or not... it doesn't have to be that way.

Our new Web Form Generator: More Powerful Than Rocky?

OK, maybe it can't beat up Clubber Lang. But it definitely packs a punch.

In fact, dare I say - using our new editor you can build a beautiful looking form without knowing the first thing about HTML.

Not only that... its fun to use. Really.

So for those of you who used to hire a professional to make your forms look pretty - take that money and go have a beer on us. YOU'VE just been promoted to lead designer.

Show Us How You Want Your Form to Look - We'll Do the Heavy Lifting

The new Web Form Generator makes it way easier to create an elaborate form, which when done properly will help you better communicate with your subscribers.

I'll show you what I mean.

For this example, lets say I am the proud owner of a real estate company called "Honey & Vinegar Realty." We currently have a form on our website which collects subscribers' name and email. This is great, but we really feel like we could be getting more out of our list of subscribers.

So as always, I first click the "Web Forms" tab and then click the green "+ Create New Form" button, although this time I'm greeted by the new Web Form Generator (see screenshot below).

So, Let's Make a Real Estate Signup Form!

Looking through the different form templates I find that the first one is best suitable for my website.

So I click on it, which brings me to this black box that provides me with a variety of color schemes. (see below)

I like the "Trevose" color scheme... after all it is named after my home town. So I click the blue "Load Template" button.

Now my template is loaded and the template bar has been minimized.

OK, I've only clicked a couple of things and my form is already looking decent... now what?

Let's Think - What Information Do I Want to Collect From My Subscribers?

In real estate, location is key. So I think for my form it would be a great to have subscribers select areas they are interested in. This way I can segment my list and send each subscriber information that is more closely tailored to what they are looking for.

Working from top to bottom... Name and Email are already inserted into my form for me. So the next thing I'm going to want is a place for my users to pick locations.

I'll use a "Text Element" to add an instructions sentence. In this case I'll write - "Select the counties you are more interested in:".

Now, I'd like them to be able to select multiple areas. Using a checkbox might be my best bet.

So I'll create a new "Field" for each county and set the "Input Type" to be a checkbox.

I'm happy with my design but I feel like maybe I should have some sort of divider to separate the sections of the form a little bit.

So lets add one in:

And of course I can't forget to add some some writing in my header and footer:

There you have it! A nice, professional form... without touching any HTML.

At This Point I Know Everyone Is Probably Thinking "Yeah, Yeah... Get to the Templates!"

Eric and I are now in the phase of development where we are spending most of our time cranking out form templates. We want to provide some fresh designs and ideas to take your forms to the next level.

Click to view some of the ones we've made up to this current date.

Of Course, Your Input is The Most Important Thing of All.

If you have any ideas for form templates that you'd want made, please leave a comment.

Eric and I will be creating a lot of form templates in the up coming weeks so any inspiration and ideas you can send our way will go a long way!

Why You’ll Love AWeber’s New Web Form Generator

"New Web Form Generator? But AWeber already has a web form generator..."

Sure we do. And it's helped marketers create hundreds of thousands of opt-in forms that you'll find on websites in countless industries.

At the time we released it, the web form tool was cutting edge, and it's stood up well over time.

But it wasn't perfect.

It didn't output the prettiest HTML. And while you could certainly customize that HTML to fit the look of your website, you had to do so outside of AWeber, rather than styling it before you got the form HTML, and you had to do so without any templates.

We knew we could create something better. So we did.

To prove it, here's a video, and a list of reasons why you're going to love our new Web Form Generator.

Can't play the video? Watch it on the blog.

Web Form Templates

You may not be a web designer, but you still want a web form that looks like it was made by one.

So we're launching the new Web Form Generator with a slew of templates to help you build great-looking forms with one click of your mouse. Currently there are about 25 template "families," each available in a variety of colors and styles (and we'll keep adding more).

Advanced Design Tools

Want to customize a template to make it yours? Or build your own one-of-a-kind stylish opt-in form from scratch?

The new Web Form Generator gives you the same sort of powerful design customization that you'd typically find in web design software.

You'll drag and drop. You'll point and click. You'll have complete control over the feel of your forms, and you'll make better-looking ones than ever before.

Better Popover and Lightbox Animation

Do you use "hover" style forms (like our lightbox ones) to grab visitors' attention and lift your opt-ins?

You'll love the updated animations used for these new forms; we've ditched the Windows95-looking blue bars at the top and smoothed out the fading and sliding motions.

Dynamic Thank You Pages

Want to use video on your thank you pages to increase confirmed opt-ins, but don't have the time or equipment to make it happen?

Use our video thank you pages to provide precise instructions to each new subscriber on how to confirm.

We'll even show them exactly what your confirm email looks like in their specific email program (Gmail, AOL, Yahoo, Hotmail, Outlook, Mac Mail, etc).

Stay Tuned For More

The new Web Form Generator will be released soon. Until then, we'll keep filling you in on how you'll be able to create better signup forms and improve your list-building.

Keep watching the blog!
 Tweet This

Is It Ever OK To Break Best Practices?

This blog talks a lot about the “best practices” involved in effective email marketing: relevance, design, expectations…

…but are best practices always the way to go?

I recently saw an email newsletter that made me wonder how far we should follow best practices. While the newsletter and website follow a lot of email marketing best practices, they definitely break at least one (and maybe more). Normally I’d chastise them for it, but… I just don’t know here.

Have a look and tell me what you think.

Stuck In Customs’ Email Newsletter

Stuck in Customs is a travel photography site (and email newsletter) by Trey Ratcliff with some really impressive, eye-catching work on it. According to the about page, it’s visited by about 350,000 people per month.

In the sidebar of the site, you’ll find an email signup form:

You can also sign up for the newsletter from a dedicated newsletter signup page. It’s helpfully linked from the sidebar form in case you want to learn more about the newsletter before joining.

Best Practices Watch

A few good things about this form:

They keep the form relatively short (I’m not sure how necessary/useful it is to use 2 fields for “name” but it’s not the end of the world) and easy to fill out (the text inside the boxes clears out when you click inside it).

All of the text above the form is clickable to the newsletter signup page. (Does this make up for not being able to see it’s a link until I hover my mouse over it?)

And a few things I question:

It’s not clear from the copy here what is in the newsletter! Presumably it’s related to the site, but what’s the draw of the newsletter? Why should I sign up?

I can’t tell right away that there’s a link to the newsletter signup page. (It’s all of the text above the form, but none of it looks like a link until you move your mouse over it.)

This website is really wide – so much so that on a 1024 x 768 monitor, the newsletter signup form doesn’t even appear – you’d have to scroll sideways to see/find it! (More on side scrolling later on…)

The newsletter signup page itself is really impressive:

Click image above for full-size version.

It clearly conveys the benefits of subscribing.

It tells you how to subscribe.

It promises that you won’t get spammed.

It shows an example of what the newsletter looks like.

It even includes some social proof via the map of subscribers included at the bottom.

Really cool all around. So no complaints about best practices here.

But then I subscribed. This is when I started to get conflicted…

Holy Gigantic Newsletter, Batman!

I can confidently say that Stuck in Customs has the largest emails I have ever seen in my life. Nobody else even comes close.

And they start you off with them from the get-go. Here’s what I saw when I opened their welcome email in Gmail:

Click image above for full-size version.

Yeah, it side-scrolls. Even on a 1280×1024 monitor. Heck, it’s even wider than Gmail’s built to accommodate (look at the upper right-hand corner of that image). I simply cannot view the whole email all at once, and unless Stuck In Customs’ subscribers have huge monitors, neither can they.

And we’re just talking width here… what about the length?

Here’s the full email.

For the record, on my monitor it takes 17 presses of the “Page Down” key to get from the top to the bottom of that email. That’s one big message.1

Best Practices Watch

What I like about this email:

The content is awesome, and exactly like what’s on the website. If you’re into travel and/or HDR photography, I see no reason to think you wouldn’t love this content.

The design of the email pairs beautifully with the website, and it renders well in Gmail (I didn’t test elsewhere), which is impressive, given how poorly Gmail tends to render email.

While it’s an image-heavy email, there is some text. Not a ton relative to the size of the email, but some. The email isn’t one big image.

What I don’t like so much? The sheer size. Whether you look at file size, dimensions, side scrolling, how many times you have to hit “Page Down,” whatever… this is a gigantic email.

Let’s break it down in more detail:

How is someone supposed to load this on a mobile device? What about slower internet connections?

Doesn’t having to scroll side-to-side make the email less usable and a poorer subscriber experience?

Will subscribers realize they have to side scroll? In 1024 x 768 you can’t really see the note on the right-hand side of the newsletter.

Do the images have to be shown in their full size within the email? Why not link smaller, low-res versions (none of those images are clickable, by the way) to hi-res versions on the Stuck in Customs website?

My Thoughts on This Email & Best Practices

Stuck in Customs breaks a number of best practices, mostly related to size (of the emails) and location (of the sidebar signup form – it’s off the screen on a number of monitor sizes).

But in spite of that, and my years of exposure to best practices, studies, etc… I can’t say they’re not doing what’s right for their audience.

Starting from scratch, I would never have made the newsletter like this. I would have made it no more than 600px wide. I would have put low-res versions of the images in the email, and linked them to high-res versions online.

But Trey did it the way he did it, and he has a lot of subscribers, none of whom (from what I can see) are complaining to him about the size.

Part of this may be his audience, but I’d bet it also has something to do with his newsletter signup page, which sets expectations so well.

Questions For You To Think About

What do you think of Stuck in Customs’ email?

What best practices matter most to you?

Do you think there are some best practices that can/should be ignored at times? Which ones?

Which best practices are sacred and inviolable?

I’m curious to get your thoughts on this… share them below!

No, the irony that I wrote a really long blog post about a really long email is not lost on me.
 Tweet This

Test Results: How Long Should Your From Line Be?

Maybe you've never thought about it.

Typically length is a concern that comes up when discussing subject lines - how many characters you can fit in a subject before your subscribers' email programs cut it off.

But the same thing applies to your "from" line; if it's too long, subscribers won't be able to read all of it while viewing their list of emails.

Here's what I mean:

Emails From My Inbox With Long "From" Lines

Within the last 48 hours, I've received messages from these long-named senders:

See how the "from" lines all cut off right around the same point? They're longer than Gmail is willing to show me all at once.

What About Other Email Programs?

I wanted to find out if other email programs did this, and if so, at what point they did so.

So I ran a test: emailing different addresses of mine at the various webmail providers as well as in MS Outlook, with "John Jacob Jinglehiemier Schmidt" set as the "from" name.

Here are the results:

John Jacob Jinglehiemier

24

Observations

In most webmail programs, it didn't matter what operating system you were on. Hotmail was the exception in that it cuts off the "from" line a couple characters earlier if you're on a Mac.

All my tests were in Firefox, so I can't say whether the various browsers (IE, Chrome, Safari, Opera) would affect these figures.

Where the width of the "Sender" column could be adjusted (notably Mozilla Thunderbird), I used the default width.

Users can obviously change this and so there's no way to guarantee that the results of this test will hold true for every user.

These email clients don't all necessarily look at character counts for the cutoff; some may cut off after a certain number of pixels.

Individual recipients may set different settings that cause more or fewer characters to appear in the space provided (example: whether a recipient uses fixed-width or variable-width fonts can affect how many characters display).

I include these observations to give you an idea of why your results might vary from these; however, I'd categorize most of these as relatively minor issues and/or edge cases that shouldn't affect how you use this information.

So Your From Line Should Always Be 20 Characters Or Fewer?

Not necessarily. Just like when you look at subject line length, there's no one universally right answer here.

Short isn't always better - not if keeping it short cuts down on your ability to achieve your email campaign's goals.

Take a look back at the screenshot from my inbox. Some of them - like "Ebates Top Picks Newslet" - are easily recognizable even though they've been truncated. Others don't fare so well. Who is "Maggie L. Fox, Alliance"? I had no idea when I got that email.

Recognition is a determining factor here. If a long "from" line makes it harder to recognize who you are, then shorten it.

Position is another factor. If your "from" line is going to run long, get the most important and recognizable parts at the beginning. For example, MarketingProfs' small business newsletter is called Get to the Point. Their "from" line is really long, but they make sure I see the branded part even when Gmail cuts off the rest - "Get to the Point: Small ."

Your "From" Line Suggestions?

What have you learned about creating effective "from" lines? Done any testing of them?

How did you determine what to use for your own?

Share your thoughts on the blog!

Tweet This

Blog Broadcast Migration 10/7/09 and FeedBurner Reporting

Here's a quick note for those of you who convert RSS to email using our Blog Broadcast tool and also use a FeedBurner RSS feed.

This Wednesday, 10/7/09 we will be making some back-end changes to the Blog Broadcast tool that may cause subscriber numbers reported to FeedBurner to temporarily be inaccurate. The reporting should be back to normal within 1-3 days.

These changes help pave the way for a number of enhancements we have planned for the Blog Broadcast tool. Thanks for your patience while the stats reporting sorts itself out!

30 Chefs, 3 Days, 1 Winner: Fall Potluck/Contest

We try to foster a sense of community here at AWeber, be it through friendly video game rivalries or joshing about Bob and Eric's excessive decorating. Our bonding and socializing can lead to the discovery of common interests, as evidenced by this conversation, which may or may not have occurred at some point in AWeber history: "Hey, office pal, do you like to cook?
"Yes."
"Wow!" This startling revelation inspired us to organize a company event in order to showcase the vast culinary talent we have on staff. A "put your food where your mouth is" scenario, if you will. Those of you more familiar with email marketing may be familiar with the technical term "potluck." We decided to document the event, because everyone likes food. (Mary actually won an American Express gift certificate for her fantastic dish, but we thought Fitzgerald's roman à clef might help to class up the video a bit). You can also watch the video on YouTube (plus another jokey one, not for the weak stomached!).
What Do 73.9% of Email Newsletters Have in Common?

Nearly three quarters of all broadcasts sent from AWeber last month share a common basic characteristic.

It's not subject line personalization (although many email marketing campaigns do indeed use this).

It's not that the sender chose to tweet the email newsletter.

It's not that they were created from blog content using our RSS to email tools.

Nope, it's even more basic than that. And it might surprise some of you (at least, based on some of your responses to Bob's recent post on HTML email design examples).

So what is it?

Most Email Newsletters Are Sent In HTML

In August 2009, 73.9% of all broadcast messages sent through AWeber included an HTML version.

For comparison, in August 2008 only 58.9% of broadcasts included an HTML version. In other words, the use of HTML in email newsletters has increased 25.47% in the past year!

Here's how the percentage has changed over the past four years:

Surprised?

I'll admit that even I was when I saw the stats. A lot of marketers still believe that plain text is the "default" format to go with (just see the comments on Bob's post), and while I knew that the reality was different (even 3 years ago, over 53% of the broadcasts sent from AWeber included an HTML version), I didn't expect such a strong majority of broadcasts to include HTML.

Why Has HTML Email Become So Much More Popular?

I'd like to think that at least in part this is due to the increasing number of HTML email templates we've released over the past couple of years.

But that certainly isn't the only reason, and it's probably not the primary one. If you're going to use HTML, you're going to do so because you've found it gets better results than text, or you believe it has the potential to do so.

So what potential/results might people see in HTML email?

An opportunity to provide an experience that more closely matches the one your customers & prospects have on your website.

The ability to deliver product and other images directly in the email body; to link text/images; to display content in multiple columns and take advantage of other HTML formatting.

Easier tracking of activity - no need to type out tracking URLs in the body where subscribers can see them; ability to track opens (even if opens are a somewhat imprecise metric, they can help you to compare the relative success of campaigns).

You can add a preheader to remind subscribers why they signed up, encourage them to whitelist you and take other actions that can increase response and deliverability.

More on HTML vs. plain text.

Don't Join The Crowd "Just Because" - But Don't Avoid HTML "Just Because," Either

The point here isn't "hey, 3/4 of broadcasts are in HTML, so obviously yours should be, too."

It's this: if you're sending your emails in plain text only "just because" you always have, or because the people you receive email campaigns from send in plain text, then try HTML - run some tests with it to see how your subscribers respond!

After all, you never know until you try...

More On Email Newsletters and HTML
