(This was initially posted as a reply to a blogpost regarding PiTiVi being proposed as a default application in the upcoming Ubuntu Lucid. That comment was removed for an unknown reason, so I thought it best to put it here, and it would also be interesting for other people)

What a depressing post (in some aspects). I’ll answer the various questions/comments/rants all the same.

PiTiVi doesn’t support DV/mpeg4/whatever-format

Where did you get that idea from ? PiTiVi doesn’t come shipped with codecs, it relies on GStreamer to provide the needed plugins/decoders/etc… If you load a DV file in pitivi and you don’t have the plugins, the application missing-plugin system should appear proposing you to download the needed plugin.

Collabora pushed PiTiVi aggresively into ubuntu

That’s 100% totally wrong. I personally had chats with Jono and Rick Spencer about having PiTiVi shipped as a default application, and canonical were interested by the idea of having a video editor shipped by default. All of this was far from being enforced, or us (Collabora) going out of our way to have PiTiVi shipped by default. And nothing’s engraved in stone at this point. If we (pitivi development team) get feedback/help on improving what’s bothering people by the Lucid release date and people deem it good enough to be shipped by default, great ! If we get no help… well.. PiTiVi won’t die and people will still be able to use it via PPAs.

Why ship PiTiVi as default app and not another video editor ?

I’d say the main reason is that all the dependencies (except for goocanvas, which is pretty slim) are already shipped by default : GStreamer, GTK, python. All the other editors would require bringing in more dependencies. I’ll let Canonical/Ubuntu confirm that or not.

lack of features …

On this part we have always taken the stand of making sure features are as solid as possible before adding new features. In terms of video editing, that means you do need to have input/output format support rock solid, trimming/cutting rock solid. Check out how many clips/movies/documentaries/… out there and see how much of them make use of video effects, for how long, and how many don’t.
The two features we find critically missing are : video transitions and overlaying. I just merged yesterday the videomixing branch yesterday to master which enables setting transparency on every video streams (like Sony Vegas does). It still has some issues, but having it in master will force/speedup the bugfixing process.
Video effects are not a top-priority. Getting those… without being able to do the features above are pointless. We won’t diverge from that point of view. Helping us get the above rock solid as fast as possible … will mean you will see video effects faster.

To people throwing generic rants about <video-editor-name> sucking

Write a video editor (or any non-trivial multimedia applicatoin), then come back and rant about other people’s application sucking. Then we might have a proper discussion. In the meantime… you’re not improving the situation.

PiTiVi is dead or no longer maintained

The 3 main developers (who also happen to be hired by Collabora and that includes myself) have been working on some other company work in the meantime. Keeping Collabora hiring those 3 developers, means ensuring they have time to be paid to work on it also. (I’d personnaly love to have people working 100% of the time on PiTiVi … but you need to take into account the reality of running a business).
We’re progressively getting more company time for PiTiVi (Brandon has been back on it full time for the past frew weeks for example). It’s far from being abandoned/dead, just that we do it at our own pace. It’s freely available (LGPL, no copryight attributions required) and will always stay that way. We always welcome contributions and are pretty fast to review/commit patches.

In May 2010, filmmakers and remix artists will gather in Brooklyn, New York for the first ever Re/Mixed Media Festival. The festival is organized by a group of designers, actors, and filmmakers known as lo-fi lounge.

Being artists and filmmakers ourselves, our aim is to provide a home to local filmmakers and media artists, offer them an opportunity to easily screen film or video, provide the community with low-cost editing and production equipment, foster face-to-face social interaction, and make films that challenge the boundaries of the possible. With the proliferation of media made possible by new technologies that put creation and distribution tools into the hands of the people, it’s essential that people understand the power of media, and the vast responsibility of wielding that power. Our intention is to promote media literacy, foster talent, and cultivate media appreciation in the community.

For the festival, lo-fi lounge is seeking remixed or mashed-up films that are under 10 minutes in length. The group seeks to display the products of and educate the people about fair use.

The Festival aims to challenge the current laws by bringing public awareness to media mixing as a legitimate practice, while at the same time remaining within their boundaries of the law. We are soliciting artists who remix responsibly. This does not mean claiming someone else’s work as your own, it means recognizing that every artist contributes to the global cultural library and works can and should be built upon, modified, and repurposed with the goal of bringing a new work of art into the world.

Seems very cool—If you’re interested in participating, the submission deadline is February 28, 2010.

What happens, though, when Fox News decides to send over 150 Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) takedown notices to YouTube—all aimed against a single clip provider? Well, the criticism is silenced. At least, briefly.

Many blogs, mostly liberal, get their Fox News clips from a YouTube channel called News1News. The Huffington Post, Truthdig, Gawker, and more depend on News1News for political fodder—something Fox News didn’t seem to like. Late last week, the large media corporation sent enough DMCA notices to push News1News far past YouTube’s three-strike rule, resulting in an automatic termination of the account and leaving many blogs with empty embedded players. Hundreds of thousands of viewers were met with a familiar message: “This video has been removed due to a terms of use violation.”

Gawker, which published the story yesterday, claimed (prematurely) that these takedowns were selective—a politically motivated move on Fox’s part—and noted that channels like ConservativeNation and GlennBeckDailyClips are still up. Later in the day, though, ConservativeNation posted that they began receiving takedown notices as well. As of today, both GlennBeckDailyClips and ConservativeNation have been suspended.

Under Section 512(f) of the DMCA, a copyright holder can be held liable if they misrepresent their claim against an alleged infringer. This means that Fox needs to keep fair use in mind before they can send takedowns, at the risk of being sued for damages. I’m no lawyer, but it seems pretty clear that use of these clips fall under or newsworthiness or critical nature needed to be protected by the fair use doctrine.

Last week, YouTube implemented new features to give content partners more ways to block users from accessing video. “Block by Country” and “Enable Auto Block outside Ownership” are marketed as giving partners more control over their content, but these features have unsettling consequences for the online video medium.

“Block by Country” lets partners geo-block specific videos in areas around the world for any number of reasons—rights issues, cultural sensitivity, marketing strategy, etc. But by giving content partners the ability to block users in a given country, YouTube virtually guarantees a balkanization of the rights of viewers. Imagine if you had to live inside the United States (or New York City) to read a NYTimes.com article, or that you had to live in Russia to access certain Russian bloggers. Video is really the only type of content that is routinely treated this way, and by normalizing the practice of blocking content by country, YouTube is tugging at the fabric of the net.

This type of control may seem warranted for people who have put time and energy into creating a video. However, it fundamentally changes how we use and collectively understand the internet. One feature of the internet is that it transcends borders, bringing people closer together and facilitating communication. Uneven access to information by country is not what makes the internet a rich place—this special treatment of video portends a fractured and dangerous future for the web.

The other feature unveiled by YouTube, “Enable Auto Block outside Ownership” allows content owners to utilize YouTube’s Content ID system to automatically block any unauthorized mirror of a video. Though on its face this feature protects creators from others racking up views with their content, it also prohibits mirroring and viral distribution, two defenses against bad citizenship on YouTube. Kevin Driscoll of the YouTomb project had this to say:

Prior to the “Enable Auto Block outside Ownership” feature, mirrored videos existed more or less peacefully alongside “official” uploads because high-volume content owners could claim “ownership” (and, by extension, advertising revenue) on a mirrored video instead of having it blocked. By disallowing mirroring, videos are subject to a single-point-of-failure. Should the original uploader close his or her account, the video – and all of its comments, links, ratings, and responses – will disappear from the site.

It’s unclear whether the “Auto Block outside Ownership” feature would also prohibit video citations or short clips of protected videos from being uploaded. But such restrictions would have a negative effect on the ability of individuals to carry on conversations that rely on a fair use. As with other instances of YouTube’s Content ID system, the idea of fair use is nullified by a feature in the software.

Lawrence Lessig, in the seminal Code, writes that users are bound bound by code as if by law. “As the world is now, code writers are increasingly lawmakers. They determine what the defaults of the Internet will be.” The decisions written into the code of desktop software and websites structure the ways in which people can and will use them—they regulate the potential and limitations of the net, effectively as law.

These two features are prime examples of the maxim that “code is law.” By creating an environment where this sort of filtering and blocking is okay, YouTube is giving its partners powers over speech and activity that are at odds with the nature of the Internet.

“Despite its struggles, YouTube remains the primary home of web video and the accompanying discourse,” said Driscoll. “Any feature that privileges the property rights of partners over users, is disrespectful to the thousands of YouTube users that invested the site with their time, care, and culture.”

Desde que me rebané la sesera para hacer funcionar el efecto Zoomi con JQuery hasta ahora ha pasado mucho tiempo. Ahora ya comienzo a comprender el asunto y hacer funcionar un script como Lightbox no me supone un quebradero como aquel pero me gusta dejar una memoria para futuros proyectos y para que sirva de apoyo a algún que otro lector.

Tras buscar por la red un efecto bonito y sencillo para incorporar a unas imágenes de una pequeña web que me han encargado opté por Lightbox por ser un script sencillo de implementar y con un resultado visual muy atractivo y elegante como puede verse aquí.

En la web oficial vienen detallados todos los pasos para implementarlo pero vamos a hacerlo aquí de una manera más descriptiva a la vez que usamos KompoZer para realizar la mayor cantidad de trabajo posible en un modo de edición visual y no picando código (aivá, parezco un profesional auténtico)

Una vez descargada la última versión de Lightbox, en mi caso la 2.04 descubrimos que tras descomprimir hay una carpeta con varias subcarpetas:

• css: incluye el archivo para el estilo de la página. En su momento tendremos que enlazar nuestros HTML a este CSS.
• images: con todo lo necesario para que el script muestre botones, cargadores… En su momento crearemos algunos nuevos para que nuestro script muestre esta información en español.

• js: donde se encuentran los javascripts necesarios para que todo esto funcione.

Además tenemos al lado de estas carpetas un archivo llamado index.html para poder acceder a un tutorial sobre la puesta en marcha del script y que usa las imágenes de antes.

Tenemos una imagen en tamaño miniatura y la original a tamaño real que saldrá al ejecutar el script:

Lo primero es ir al código y pegar entre <head> y </head> las tres líneas que llaman a los javascripts.

Tal y como puede verse en las rutas relativas (js/..) se está dando por supuesto que nuestro archivo estará situado al lado de la carpeta js, por lo que si nuestro archivo va a llamarse index.html debemos renombrar el del tutorial o se sobreescribirá.
Bien; pues ya tenemos las llamadas a los javascripts insertados. La llamada al CSS vamos a hacerla desde el editor visual. Se supone que ya tenemos guardado nuestro proyecto como index.html al lado de la carpeta js; así que vamos al editor de CSS (Herramietas/Editor CSS) y escojemos Hoja de estilos enlazada:

Una vez marcada la ruta hacia la carpeta css y su archivo lightbox.css ésta aparecerá en la lista de hojas de estilo:

Con esto se ha creado automáticamente (entre <head> y </head>) la siguiente línea en el código…

…que es exactamente la misma que nos dice el tutorial que podíamos insertar a mano.

Es el momento de incluir la miniatura en el proyecto (Insertar/Imagen) y de crear en ella un enlace (Insertar/Enlace) cuyo destino es la imagen grande.

Para que al hacer clic sobre la miniatura se produzca el efecto deseado tan sólo tenemos que asignarle al enlace el atributo rel=”lightbox”. Para hacerlo de manera gráfica, sólo tenemos que hacer clic derecho sobre la etiqueta <a> en la parte baja de la interfaz (hay que asegurarse de tener seleccionada la miniatura en cuestión):

Esto nos despliega un cuadro en el que escogemos en el campo de la izquierda en atributo rel y escribimos en el de la derecha el valor lightbox:

La apariencia después de la animación que amplía la imagen es esta:

¿Qué podemos hacer a partir de aquí?.
Pues cambiar la imagen que incluye el texto CLOSE y la X por un nuevo GIF como este:

Y también podemos insertar un pie de página para hacer una descripción de la imagen siempre que le añadamos a la etiqueta <a> el atributo title del mismo modo que antes le añadimos el atributo rel.
Este sería un ejemplo en el que ya se incluye el cambio de la imagen para salir del efecto:

NOTA: es posible hacer que al ejecutar el javascript se muestre una secuencia de imágenes con una agradable transición entre ellas. El método a seguir es añadir entre corchetes el nombre del grupo al que pertenecen las imágenes a mostrar. Lo mejor es un ejemplo:

Esto hace aparecer nuevos botones que quizá deberían ser sustituidos por versiones en español y un texto que dice, por ejemplo, Image 2 of 6 (en inglés).
Después de mirar algo el asunto he visto que esto puede cambiarse si accedemos al archivo lightbox.js con un editor del tipo Gedit para Linux o Notepad++ para Win y editando en esta parte:

Ademas de este escueto vídeo, os dejo un articulo completo de lo que pretende Google con este lenguaje y el futuro que se le puede augurar y para los que os interese el tema, otro vídeo de casi una hora de duración.

Google ha anunciado que está llevando al terrero de la fuente abierta un lenguaje de programación experimental llamado Go que intenta combinar la velocidad de desarrollo de un lenguaje dinámico como Python con el rendimiento y seguridad de un lenguaje compilado como C o C++.

En los experimentos realizados con Go, las creaciones típicas se hacen casi de forma instantánea mientras que los grandes binarios se compilan en segundos, según ha explicado The Go Team en el blog de código abierto de Google.

Go, que se ofrece bajo una licencia del estilo de BSD, ha sido desarrollado para dar respuesta a una tendencia que lleva a los ordenadores a ser cada vez más rápidos mientras que el desarrollo de software no se ha acelerado. También parece dar respuesta a una creciente rebelión contra complicados sistemas como Java y C++ que ha llevado a la gente a adoptar lenguajes dinámicos como Python y JavaScript, más sencillos.

Pero las razones para la creación de Go no se quedan ahí, porque según explican en su página web, también nace como una respuesta a los ordenadores multinúcleo, que parecen haber generado alguna preocupación entre los desarrolladores. El lenguaje fue concebido para que fuera más fácil escribir software que Google utiliza internamente pero su implementación no estaba lo suficientemente madura como para utilizarlo en una producción a gran escala.

Go proporciona un modelo de construcción de software que facilita el análisis de dependencia y evita gran parte de la sobrecarga de la programación estilo C, incluidos archivos y binarios. Desde la página web de Go se afirma que “Go es un experimento y esperamos que se encuentre la suficiente satisfacción como para justificar más desarrollo”.

BUGS ADDRESSED IN 2.5.1 

Voy a aprovechar este post para dar la bienvenida a KompoZer 0.8b1 que ya está disponible en español e incluye unos cuantos cambios respecto a la 0.8a4. Dentro de unos días contaré en qué medida (poca) he colaborado en la nueva imagen del logo de la futura versión 0.8.
Crear un efecto rollover en KompoZer usando su editor de CSS es relativamente sencillo si se conserva el texto con el link y ya lo traté en su momento con este otro tutorial.
El asunto se complica un poco si lo que queremos es que el botón actúe de la misma manera pero sin que aparezca el texto del enlace. Un efecto típico es poner un menú de imágenes en blanco y negro o desenfocadas y conseguir que se pongan en color o que se enfoquen al pasar con el ratón por encima.

Es posible que haya otros métodos igual de efectivos que el que yo voy a describir aquí pero este funciona sin problema.

Lo primero, como es lógico, es contar con una única imagen que incluya las dos posiciones del rollover para la que usaremos esta imagen

Y este es el rollover creado con la ayuda de Gimp (300×263px)

Ya en KompoZer creamos el contenedor DIV en el que se incluirá este rollover. Este contenedor puede que esté dentro de otro u otras mil posibilidades que nosotros aquí no vamos a detallar. A ese contenedor genérico le asignamos una id=”menu” (aunque aquí no editaremos ninguna de sus características). En ese contenedor creamos una lista de viñetas para los enlaces del menú a la que le damos una id=”rollovers” y al primero de los enlaces le asignamos una id=”rollover_01″

Por último creamos un enlace, de momento un enlace nulo con destino # para enlace_01:

Ya en el editor de CSS creamos las reglas de estilo #menu, #rollovers y #rollover_01:

A las que le añadimos un par de ellas más:

• #rollovers a:link para editar el comportamiento de los enlaces de texto de todos y cada uno de los rollovers que pongamos en esta lista.
• #rollover_01 a:hover para editar el comportamiento del enlace de texto cuando el ratón pasa por encima.

Comenzamos por eliminarle las viñetas a la lista editando la regla #rollovers en la pestaña Listas escogiendo la opción Tipo para el estilo de la lista: Ninguno.

Editamos ahora la regla de estilo #rollovers a:link que es donde se va a cocer el verdadero truco para ocultar el texto. Nos centramos en los campos de la pestaña Caja:

• Anchura: la de las imágenes 263px. Nada que no obedezca a la más pura lógica
• Altura: 0px (cero píxeles!!). Es el principio del truco. No dejamos sitio para que se muestre el texto del enlace. Pero ¿qué pasa con la imagen de fondo?
• Margen interno (padding) superior: 150px. Es el valor de la altura de la imagen. Con esto estamos dejando hueco para que aparezca la imagen por encima de la altura de 0px de antes. Esto genera un problema. El texto del enlace queda desplazado fuera de la caja y es visible.
• Desbordamiento: oculto. ¿Qué tiene que hacer el navegador con ese excedente en la caja?. En nuestro caso queremos que no sea visible.
• Mostrar como: bloque. Para que todo el espacio de la caja sea sensible al efecto del enlace.

Hemos conseguido que la imagen se comporte como un enlace que nos dirigirá a la dirección que le especifiquemos pero todavía falta el efecto rollover al pasar el ratón por encima. Es tan sencillo como editar la imagen de fondo que deseamos para #rollover_01 a:hover. En realidad se trata de la misma con la particularidad de que tiene que mostrar la parte inferior

Un vistazo a las posibilidades de esta herramienta nos puede llevar rápido a la conclusión de que podemos hacer composiciones más complejas para cargar una sola imagen y poder mostrar la parte que nos interese en cada momento. Por ejemplo podemos ampliar el efecto rollover con un cambio de imagen en el momento en que el usuario hace clic creando la regla de estilo #rollover_01 a:active.

Hoy va la cosa de web browsers, así que os comento también que Apple ha lanzado como es habitual en la Actualización de Software, la nueva versión de Safari. Las principales novedades a destacar son:

• Un mayor rendimiento con Javascript.
• Mejoras de las búsquedas en el historial completo para usuarios con muchos elementos en historial.
• Mejoras en la estabilidad de los módulos de terceras partes, el campo de búsqueda y Yahoo Mail.

Acaba de ser publicada la beta 2 de Firefox 3.6, con 190 bugs corregidos con respecto a la primera beta que sacaron dos semanas atras. La podéis descargar para la mayoría de sistemas operativos e idiomas desde el siguiente enlace.

La última gran adquisición es Gizmo5, una aplicación de mensajería por voz muy similar a Skype y posiblemente el único competidor de este último en el mercado actual en cuanto a comunicación por voz se refiere.
Google Talk no a acabado de cuajar en los usuarios y el mercado de las comunicaciones a través de internet es un mercado muy amplio del cual desconocemos muchos aspectos.

Existen 3 formas (las más conocidas) para comunicarse por internet:

1. Mensajería instantánea por texto (tipo MSN) en el cual hay un claro ganador ya que el programa de Microsoft es el más generalizado y utilizado en el mundo. Sin embargo en un principio era necesario crearse cuentas de hotmail o msn para su uso y eso representaba un gran número de usuarios de esos servidores de correo cuando en realidad solo se utiliaban para el messenger. Actualmente mediante las cuentas “passport” se puede acceder al MSN con cuentas de terra, gmail, yahoo… por lo que el servicio se ha mantenido pero las cuentas propias de Microsoft han disminuido a favor de Google Gmail entre otros, por lo que pese a que el servicio sea claramente generalizado a favor de MSN Messenger y no creo que Google pudiera ya cambiar esto ya que la opción “B” sería la compra de MSN pero para eso está Microsoft detrás y eso lo hace practicamente imposible.
2. Mensajería instantánea por voz (Skype) es una alternativa y opción que cada vez está tomando más fuerza. Alternativas claras a Skype son iChat para los usuarios de Mac, por lo que limita mucho su uso y posibiliades de comunciación, Google Talk que nunca llegó a cuajar en los usuarios y Gizmo5. Este último era un buen comunicador, su funcionamiento era bueno y muy similar a Skype. Con la compra de Gizmo5 por parte de Google se ve un horizonte muy claro, crear un buen servicio de mensajería por voz juntando las ideas de Google Talk y el funcionamiento además de expansión de Gizmo5 para crear un producto competitivo a Skype. ¿Y esto sería posible? Sí, por que el uso de la mensajería por voz no es tan conocida ni usada y puede ser una baza muy importante en el futuro con el uso del 3G y los moviles con esta tecnología donde se puedan realizar llamadas a través del 3G mediante estos servicios de mensajería gratuitos (entre usuarios del mismo sistema) y con llamadas muy baratas a cualquier número de teléfono. Personalmente veo una gran posibilidad en un futuro a corto plazo y Google estará ahi preparado.

Ventajas de Google Talk:

• • Permite guardar el historial de conversaciones en Gmail
  • Conversaciones desde la página de Gmail
  • Comunicación mediante la red Jabber
  • Incluye Avatares
  • Se puede cambiar el Theme del chat
  • Videoconferencias
    
    

3. Mensajería por E-mail. Uno de los grandes “inventos” de Google es su servidor de correo electrónico Gmail. Gmail ha supuesto que los usuarios habituales de google prestaran su confianza para el correo electrónico que comenzó siendo de uso exclusivo mediante invitación y como la mayoría de productos ahora es abierto a todos con una capacidad de 7Gb (y subiendo). La buena gestión del correo, filtro anti spam y demás ventajas han hecho de Gmail un correo de referencia para todos y que pese a no ser el que mayor capacidad tiene en el mercado (Yahoo! y AOL ofrecen espacio ilimitado) sí, gracias a la marca “Google” ha sido aceptado y querido por los internautas.

Como se aprecia, Google sabe que el día a día de los usuarios con sus ordenadores pasa por mandar e-mails o chatear por el MSN. De hecho si nos paramos a pensar, 2 de las primeras acciones que hacemos al encender el equipo es abrir el correo y el Adium, Amsn, Msn Messenger…
Mediante Gmail como referencia importante, no dominador absoluto pero sí un servicio consolidado y a tener en cuenta y ahora la compra de Gizmo5, Google se abre mercado en todo el abanico de la mensajería. De hecho, no lo hemos comentado pero Gizmo5 al igual que Skype tiene la opción de “chat” para escribir mensajes mediante teclado (como MSN) aunque con una interfaz mucho peor, menos opciones… ya que son programas enfocados a la comunicación por voz, que como ya he dicho me parece una apuesta muy importante para el futuro próximo.

¿La gran expansión de Google puede representar un peligro para internet o por el contrario nos beneficiaremos de que se hagan grandes aplicaciones de la mano de Google?

Es la pregunta que planteamos en la nueva encuesta de facilware.com y donde queremos saber vuestra opinión sobre si la opción de que Google acapare todos los sectores habidos y por haber de internet es positivo por la calidad que imprime a sus productos o por el contrario es negativo por el monopolio que esto puede significar.

During December of last year, the YouTomb people helped me with a DMCA issue. I uploaded a remix video involving a Lazy Town song mixed with a Lil Jon song and it was taken down by a DMCA claim by LazyTown Entertainment. A counter notice claiming fair use was filed with YouTube and no legal action was taken against me so the video was eventually restored.

This week LazyTown Entertainment decided to file a second DMCA claim on the same video. YouTube takes it down again and this now being my third strike, terminates my account. It is in YouTube’s best interest to comply with every takedown request in order to obtain safe harbor in accordance with the DMCA, but this specific takedown raises policy issues and may expose a potential loophole in the DMCA. The discussion at hand is if this second DMCA claim is actually legal or not. We can’t find any specific cases where a situation like this has happened before but regardless of the legality, there is a need to revise policies within YouTube or the DMCA.

If there is some sort of “double jeopardy” type provision that prevents a second filing then we have an issue with how YouTube handles takedowns. Many takedowns are processed automatically and clearly this duplicate request was not noticed by YouTube’s system. This gives the wrong impression to users who may have prevailed in the face of DMCA claims, almost as if YouTube is apathetic to what you have done in the past. This also leans towards a revision of the “three strikes rule” and how all takedowns are counted against you, even if one has already been proven in your favor. The question also remains if there is a need to penalize the copyright holder and possibly YouTube in this instance.

If multiple filings are in fact legal then this is an aspect of the DMCA that needs revision. Theoretically, this practice of duplicate filings can be used to permanently take down content without ever having a dispute filed in court. All a copyright holder needs to do is immediately file another takedown as soon as the offending content is restored, and in the meantime there is no threat to the copyright holder to lose in court because it will never get that far since they are responsible for the filing. Even if it were to go to court a copyright holder can just use multiple legal teams to file takedowns at different points in time, each acting without knowledge of the other teams existing. Organizations known for silencing critics or even your standard internet troll could file an infinite number of bogus takedowns and may dodge ever going to court.

There is one known identical copy of the video on YouTube that was uploaded prior to this week and is still live (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJ0AhVyKCLY). We presume this copy has not been taken down because the account it was uploaded with is registered as a Canadian account. Takedown requests in Canada are handled differently in comparison to the rest of the world. If a takedown has been filed with this copy then the actual process may be delayed slightly. To summarize these are the questions at hand:

Is it legal for a content owner to file a subsequent DMCA claim against content that has been restored from a previous DMCA claim, filed by the same claimant, that was successfully contested? If it is not legal, who is at fault and how should they be penalized?

Despues de bastante espera, la nueva versión de este prometedor proyecto de la fundacion linux, ve la luz.

Para los que no lo sepan, Moblin v2.1 es un Sistema Operativo orientado principalmente para todos los ordenadores que trabajen con procesadores Intel Atom (prácticamente la mayoría de Ultraportatiles).

Básicamente este SO esta orientado para netbooks por lo que es de esperar que prácticamente todo este enfocado a aplicaciones de internet, arranque extremadamente rápido (en comparación con UNR), mensajería instantánea,….

En esta ultima versión han prestado especial atención al navegador que ha sido reformado notablemente, al igual que nuevos soportes para módems 3G, nuevo gestor de redes, y soporte para el emparejamiento de dispositivos Bluetooth, la incorporación de una herramienta estilo AppStore, incluyendo la incorporación de idiomas, entre ellas el Español.

Podréis verlo en funcionamiento en el vídeo anterior, descargarlo y mirar alguna que otra característica mas en su pagina oficial.

Hace ya tiempo que presenté una propuesta en forma de tutorial para conseguir un efecto al que denominé foto-explosión y se creaba con Inkscape.

En esta ocasión mi propósito es conseguir un efecto en la misma línea pero totalmente 3D. Para ello lo primero es elegir como software Blender. Como ya no tiene mucho sentido continuar generando documentación con la interfaz de las versiones 2.4x voy a aprovechar esta ocasión para crear mi primer tutorial usando capturas de pantalla de lo que será la flamante 2.5 (he usado una SVN para Windows). Además así me voy animando a conocerla “por dentro” después de ver tanto vídeo contando sus maravillas. Ni que decir tiene que he quedado alucinado totalmente con la nueva manera de organizar todo. La velocidad a la hora de renderizar ha mejorado mucho y el aspecto “in house” que tantas críticas ha tenido ha desaparecido por fin. Muchos botones que no servían para nada por haber quedado obsoletos han desaparecido… En fin, que me ha encantado.

2009 EnhanceTV ATOM Award Winners Announced
The winners of the 2009 EnhanceTV ATOM Awards were announced last Friday, 23 October at a ‘big screen extravaganza’ held in the Plaza Ballroom of Melbourne’s Regent Theatre. The announcement of the outstanding list of winners was greeted with much enthusiasm by attendees and highlighted the glowing future of Australian screen.

"We were thrilled, as always, with the calibre and content featured by this year's productions, both of the winners and the worthy finalists," commented Simon Wilmot, ATOM Awards Executive Officer.

"This program stands alone in this industry as the only one which judges, recognizes and then celebrates student works and those of industry professionals at the same time, something of which we at ATOM are very proud. The importance of the education and professional media industries working together to ensure that the bar is constantly being raised and our industry is continuing to grow and flourish cannot be underestimated and this program works hard to further this drive," he added.

The annual ATOM Awards program - now in its 27th year - recognises excellence in over thirty categories of Film, Television, Animation and Multimedia (including video games) and celebrates the very best of Australian and New Zealand production.

The competition was open this year to anyone who had produced a short film, documentary, animation, electronic game, educational resource, television program or innovative new media work in the past twelve months.

Miro Community tackles two fundamental issues facing online video—the navigation of content dispersed all over the web, and the difficulty for less tech savvy producers to establish their own attractive video site. Audiences and creators know all too well the hassle of searching unsuccessfully for a video or maintaining unified video content across a growing number of popular hosting platforms.

With Miro Community, creators can display all their videos in one location, even if those videos come from a variety of sites like YouTube, Blip, Vimeo, or are self-hosted elsewhere. Users and organizations can create their own website and pull together already existing content and add new videos. Visitors can comment, view administrator curated playlists, or submit a video that they think is worth adding to the collection.

For universities, this might provide more professional web front-end than either iTunes or YouTube for open courseware and related materials. For public broadcasting affiliates, it could mean a free, accessible location for digitally distributed content. In terms of presentation, the site gives video the spotlight and because it is ad-free, there are no unwanted promos to distract from the viewing experience.

In and before version 0.7 practially all development was done by project lead Martin Renold alone. However, for the upcoming release I suspect that over half of the commits/code changes comes from others. And this is not due to Martin slacking off! Especially Ilya Portnov has done a lot of good work, but we also have significant contributions from 4-5 others. Needless to say, this is awesome.

MyPaint v0.8?

Here are some of the larger features/improvements that will be in the next release.

• Internationalization – you can now have MyPaint in your own language!
• Layer dialog – a graphical interface for manipulating layers
• Palette – with nifty features like autogeneration of colors/shades

• Improved brush dialog – with tagging/grouping to make it easier to navigate

Mientras buscaba una herramienta con la que trabajé hace algún tiempo para hacer caras en 3D me topé con Ultimate Flash Face. Es una utilidad online muy interesante en la medida en que además de traer un amplio abanico de posibilidades para ojos, pelo, narices… permite editar las proporciones X e Y de cada una de ellas con lo que las combinaciones son mucho mayores. La interfaz de trabajo es tan sencilla como esta:

Tampoco es que me haya detenido mucho en ella pero me pareció una bonita herramienta a tener en cuenta en ciertas circunstancias y me animé a crear un post con ella y mostrar mi retrato robot de este individuo… Espero haber movido los elementos lo suficientemente bien como para que sea reconocido por usted.

Entre en Ultimate Flash Face y páselo bien un rato; es seguro que se puede tratar también el tema de la caricatura… pero eso lo dejo para usted.

1. Arranque mas rápido: Nuevo diseño del arranque de esta versión de Ubuntu, mas vistoso, elegante y rápido que nunca.
2. Tema de escritorio: Nuevos iconos y una selección de colores mas oscuros son algunas de las novedades que encontraremos en el tema por defecto.
3. Ext4 por defecto: Finalmente EXT4 se incluye de forma predeterminada sustituyendo a la versión anterior de este sistema de ficheros.
4. Nuevos programas: Aplicaciones como Empathy o Ubuntu One irrumpen en esta versión reemplazando a otras como Pidgin o Ekiga.
5. Centro de Software de Ubuntu: Instalar aplicaciones será mas fácil que nunca con el nuevo centro de software.

He’s using websites like The Pirate Bay, Mininova, and TorrentFreak as a platform to introduce, distribute, and popularize awesome film. Vodo also aims to create a real relationship between the film creators and audience, hoping to eventually help support filmmakers financially in their work.

Vodo relies on the premise that for many independent filmmakers, file sharing isn’t a big concern, but reaching a wide audience is. King reasons that by spreading the films, they are gaining a grassroots buzz that rivals current Hollywood blockbusters.

The site also fosters a donation-based business model by including information about how to contribute to the creator in every file, along with a link to do so directly. All donations go straight to content creators, letting them cultivate a loyal audience and respond directly to their fans. Vodo itself is supported through membership by subscribers, who in return receive access to films being considered for distribution as well as those already available. Subscribers also vote on which of these films should be picked up by Vodo, and have direct access to producers and directors.

Últimamente no hay tiempo para nada. Demasiados trabajos y casi todos derivados de este blog. Algunos de estos trabajos están relacionados con el diseño profesional y otros con algún concurso al que me presento de vez en cuando. En 99 designs no hubo suerte con este; pero los organizadores quedaron satisfechos con esta propuesta y sus derivados y han contactado conmigo para adquirirla y poder usarla como imagen corporativa secundaria (producciones infantiles-juveniles o algo así, supongo).

Está creada, como no puede ser de otra manera con Inkscape.

Personalmente no soy muy amigo de convertir las letras en objetos en una marca corporativa pero en este caso era un requerimiento explícito de los convocantes.

Cada vez son más ratos los que se pasa uno proyectando ideas. A uno se le va la mano rápidamente al lápiz y el papel para hacer los bocetos pero acabas dándote cuenta de que casi siempre estás dibujando los mismos elementos una y otra vez. Para aprovechar el tiempo al máximo y dedicarnos en exclusiva a la parte creativa, tenemos una bonita herramienta denominada Balsamiq Mockups. Facilita muchísimo el trabajo ya que permite mover aquí y allá cualquier elemento que nos podamos imaginar.

Imagine que está pensando en incluir un reproductor de vídeos en un proyecto web. Pues Balsamiq Mockup nos ofrece este bonito boceto para que lo pongamos allí dende nos parezca más conveniente en nuestro croquis general:

Hay docenas de bocetos prediseñados y parecen abarcar todo lo que podamos necesitar en un proyecto relacionado con las multimedia: páginas web, redes sociales, reproductores…

Se está preparando una versión online de esta herramienta, aunque no parece que vaya a ser gratuita (puede, eso sí, trastear un rato desde esta versión). Yo recomiendo instalarla en su versión freeware de escritorio, aunque ésta tenga alguna limitación. Por ejemplo no permite la exportación a mapa de bits. Yo en eso no veo mucho problema porque con hacer una captura de pantalla puede llegar. Si el proyecto es demasiado grande no quedaría más remedio que juntar las partes en Gimp. También existe la versión con licencia, como es lógico donde ese problema no existe. Otros inconveniente son que cada 5 minutos te recuerda que puedes adquirir la licencia cuando creas oportuno y, el peor de todos, NO PERMITE GUARDAR.

Aspecto positivo: se instaló con un par de clics en Linux/Ubuntu 9.04 desde el instalador online.

Hay posibilidad de conseguir una licencia gratuita si colaboras en proyectos open source, si vas a hacer muestras ante un publico superior a 15 personas, si haces análisis del programa…

No suelo sumarme mucho a este tipo de iniciativas porque, entre otras cosas, suelo enterarme tarde. Pero a esta llego a tiempo y me ha parecido muy interesante y además me viene que ni pintado para comentar un asunto concreto.

Esta iniciativa la he visto en La aldea irreductible y me ha apetecido mucho sumerme.

El tema personal está en que yo me dedico al mundo docente y tengo la suerte de poder impartir asignaturas en Bachillerato de Artes (digo suerte porque este Bachillerato es una rareza educativa, aunque sólo sea por los pocos institutos que lo ofertan).

Me he tirado tres años sacando adelante un asignatura optativa de 2º de Bachillerato llamada Tecnología de la Información: Diseño Asistido por Ordenador. No voy a mencionar la cantidad de trabajo que me supuso porque eso no tiene mérito ya que me pagan por ello…

Supongo que esto tiene que ver con este empuje del que hablan para fomentar las tecnologías en la educación. Es un parón para coger fuerza; estoy seguro (jeje). Así el año que viene nos la vuelven a poner y con ordenatas de última generación y un portátil (ese que nos han prometido tropecientas veces) para cada profe. Vamos, que estamos que da pena. Pues yo me sumo a este meme en apoyo a la ciencia. Aunque mucho me temo que con “administradores” que se lo hacen con los piés, no vamos muy bien que digamos.

I thought I’d keep a low profile until my new project was finished, but as it now seems that it is progressing quite slowly, I might as well make it public for others to see.

Rae is going to be a general purpose GUI library. It’s nowhere near finished, and it is not usable for anything but making nice little demos of it. (Well you could make something like a calculator with it. Or possibly a pictureviewer of some sort with some effort. So, it’s not entirely useless…)

The keywords go something like this: D programming language, OpenGL, X11/MIT licence, (GtkD, cairo, pango), Linux, OS X, Windows.

The source in the repository is up to date, but a bigger example like seen on the video is missing. I might add it there later, when I get the time. But feel free to try and compile it. Shouldn’t be too easy. Lot’s of nasty big dependencies, that I’d want to drop later. The code is a bit hacky, but pragmatic, so if you prefer projects with perfect code, look elsewhere. One of the main features is that it uses 0% CPU when doing nothing. Yes, that’s just how it’s supposed to be, but not any of the OpenGL GUIs that I’ve seen, do that. It’s full of small graphic glithces, unfinished widgets and buggy behaviour and sometimes even bad design. But I’m willing to change all that if anyone wants to start participating in this weird and wonderful project. Progress is slow, as always, but there’s a start. Feel free to donate me time, hardware or anything useful. (I’d put a smiley here, but I’m trying to quit using them.)

And the PPA now has a pre-install script that checks for these files and removes them. So, if you installed OpenShot as both a DEB and a PPA, and OpenShot will not start, please try and use the PPA again. It should work now.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight:bold;">Source Code Tarball</span><br />Our download page now has a new option, source code tarball. It contains an exact copy of our bzr branch. I will update this tarball periodically, just like the .DEB installers. There is of course FFmpeg, which is fantastic and powerful, but one does need to spend a serious amount of time learning the syntax and various options. This is fine if you're taking one type of input file and creating one type of output file. Easy to script and I've seen some really good results, especially using the x264 library. However, trying to find a nice GUI to do the same thing, so far no joy.<br /><br />I had really hoped <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://handbrake.fr/">HandBrake</a> might be the right tool for the job. It's been around for a long time now, it's not just for Mac anymore and there seems to be an active community around it.<br /><br />The last stable release was almost 10 months ago, but recently an <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://forum.handbrake.fr/viewtopic.php?f=6&amp;t=12464">SVN snapshot build</a> was supplied, with some <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://handbrake.fr/snapshot.php">pre-compiled packages</a> to go with it. The usual caveats apply, but the <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://trac.handbrake.fr/log/trunk?action=stop_on_copy&amp;mode=stop_on_copy&amp;rev=2845&amp;stop_rev=2829&amp;limit=200&amp;verbose=on">change log</a> provided some tantalising updates, so I decided to try it out.<br /><br />My home laptop is running Debian Squeeze, but I decided to try the Ubuntu 9.04 GUI package, as I was lazy and didn't feel like compiling from source. Maybe this was a mistake..... The installation of the deb package went fine. No errors to speak of and a nice little HandBrake icon appeared in my Sound &amp; Video menu. Starting the application also worked flawlessly.<br /><br />I hadn't used HandBrake before, so I didn't know what to expect. On first glance the software appears to be mainly geared towards H.264 transcoding. While this is currently an important video codec, I was hoping for a much wider range of output options. I couldn't find any.<br /><br />Fine, let's stick with H.264. My source file for testing was 4.2GB of DNxHD - a little over 3 minutes of content at 185Mbps. HandBrake uses FFmpeg in the backend to do the transcode heavy lifting. I know FFmpeg supports DNxHD, so I was not expecting any real problems. Unfortunately, my assumption proved to be incorrect.<br /><br />Selecting the DNxHD file as source, HandBrake scanned the file for a couple of minutes, then stopped. No error message, no warning, just the UI sitting there waiting for the next input. Fortunately, there's an Activity Window to select and view the command line output. It found the video track and 8 tracks of audio, but after this, who knows! Not being able to get a decoded picture is not an error I've come across using FFmpeg from the command line before.<br /><br /><b>EDIT:</b> The root of this problem is actually FFmpeg and not Handbrake. The DNxHD file was 10-bit, but FFmpeg currently only supports 8-bit files of this codec.<br /><br />That's as far as I've managed to travel in the HandBrake world. I had a look at some of the H.264 file output options, which are comprehensive, but don't at first glance seem to support the general <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://wiki.heywatch.com/X264+presets">x264 preset options</a>. HandBrake presets are more geared towards devices - iPod and Apple TV. It appears to be possible to queue multiple jobs using HandBrake, but not set watch folders nor apply rules for output files. However, I do question the need for 33 new video and audio effects. Some of the new effects are very nice, a welcome inclusion and most likely quite useful. Chroma Key (Green Screen) support is one of those. However, other effects are largely just eye candy which I'm not clear would be truly useful to the serious editor. These include Glow and Water from the video effect selection and Echo from the audio options. How often would a professional video editor use these tools in a commercial solution such as <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/finalcutpro/">Final Cut Pro</a>? (which actually has over 150 effects and transitions, so I guess there's a place for them!) From my own, limited, editing experience, I rarely use effects, sticking mostly to simple fade transitions.</div><div><br /></div><div>The most important aspect of any video editing software is stability and codec support. But thanks to TJ (our packaging expert) and lots of hard work from everyone on our team, we finally got there.<br /><br />What in the world is a PPA you ask? It is an acronym for <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="https://help.launchpad.net/Packaging/PPA">Personal Package Archive</a>. Here is how our friends at LaunchPad define it:<br /><blockquote style="color:rgb(102, 102, 102);"><p class="line874">"Using a Personal Package Archive (PPA), you can distribute software and updates directly to Ubuntu users. Create your source package, upload it and Launchpad will build binaries and then host them in your own apt repository. <span class="anchor" id="line-8"></span><span class="anchor" id="line-9"></span></p>That means Ubuntu users can install your packages in just the same way they install standard Ubuntu packages and they'll automatically receive updates as and when you make them."</blockquote>This is now the preferred way to install OpenShot for Ubuntu <span style="font-weight:bold;">9.04</span> and <span style="font-weight:bold;">9.10</span>. If you use an older version of Ubuntu, you will still have to use our .DEB installers. This week we wanted to take a few minutes to let you know about a film festival quite literally near and dear to our hearts.  Coming up this October - in our very own backyard - is the 20th Annual St. John's International Women's Film Festival.

Following the mantra made by women, for everyone, the Women's Film Festival features screenings of approximately 80 works by women directors, producers and writers. It also features a workshop/seminar series, industry forum, galas, receptions and other networking events.

If you're lucky enough to find yourself in beautiful St. John's, Newfoundland this fall then be sure to count yourself among the thousands attending this fabulous event.
