Old stuff

Socialtext Virtual is a working version of Socialtext that you can download and install very easily on a VMware virtual machine. It is meant only for demo purposes.

This page describes installation of Socialtext Virtual. It assumes that you already have VMware Player or VMware Server on your Windows or Linux machine, or VMware Fusion on Mac OS X. If you don't already have them, it will probably take an extra hour or so to download and install VMware.

Download the image from Sourceforge

You can download from the Socialtext Open download page on SourceForge. Download the tarball with "VM" in the name, such as "Socialtext-Open-2.9.5.1-VM.tar.bz2". It's a big file, and the download may take 45 minutes to an hour.

Once you've downloaded the tarball, back it up by duplicating it and rename the duplicate. It's helpful to have this backup copy of the install files in case you want to build a fresh virtual machine.

Then, unpack the tarball into the directory for your virtual machines.

On Windows, use WinZip or WinRAR to unzip into a given directory.

On Linux or Mac OS X, cd to the directory with your virtual machines and unzip it:

Buy Dissertation

Buy Essay

Buy Research Paper

Buy Term Paper

Buy Thesis

$ cd "~/Virtual Machines"
$ tar jxvf ~/Downloads/Socialtext-Open-2.9.5.1-VM.tar.bz2

Note that the tarballs are compressed with the bzip2 compressor, which provides much better compression than gzip. Most modern systems come with bzip2 pre-installed, but if not, you'll need to get it.

Start the VM

Start the Socialtext VM by opening it with VMware Server, VMware Player, or VMware Fusion, as appropriate.

When you open the VM the first time, you'll be asked to create a new UUID (a unique identifier for the machine). You should click the "Create" button. If you get an error message about memory, you may need to decrease the memory allocation in the VMware "Settings" menu. VMware will then start up your VM, and you'll watch Linux booting.

Log in and set network configuration

Once Linux has booted, you'll see a login prompt:

Socialtext Demo VMware Image Username: demo
Password: demo demo.socialtext.net login:

Enter a username of "demo", and a password of "demo", and you'll be logged in. The first time you log in, you'll automatically be put into the network configuration program, configure-me.

You have two options for your networking: Using DHCP, or a static IP.

DHCP setup

If you leave your IP address blank, you'll use DHCP, where your VM will get assigned an IP address automatically. You'll then be asked for a hostname, without the domain name, i.e. "wikidemo".

After you these two questions, configure-me will modify the configuration for various programs and restart services like web and mail.

Determine your IP number from the command line by typing: ifconfig | grep cast.

Static IP setup

For static IP setup, you'll be asked for the following:

IP address

netmask

gateway IP address

DNS servers to use

hostname (without domain), i.e. "wikidemo"

domain name, i.e. "mycompany.com"

You may need to ask your network administrator for this information.

After you answer all the above questions, configure-me will modify the configuration for various programs and restart services like web and mail, and then automatically restart your virtual machine.

You can run configure-me if your settings don't work for some reason. However, it will only be run for you automatically the first time you log in.

Create your administrative account

From the command line interface, use sudo to create an administrative account on your wiki.

Create an administrative user on the system:

* sudo -u www-data st-admin create-user --email youremail@yourserver.com --password password

Ensure that this user is the admin for the admin workspace:

* sudo -u www-data st-admin add-workspace-admin --email youremail@yourserver.com --workspace admin

This user should be the admin for the whole Socialtext system until a new user is created for this purpose:

* sudo -u www-data st-admin give-system-admin --email youremail@yourserver.com

You can create new users using similar commands as above for other administrative users, especially the system-admin user.

Connect and enjoy

Once the VM has been restarted and you've created an administrative account, you do not need to log into the VM again to run the wiki. (However, if you want to run Socialtext Virtual as a developer, you can use the VM as a development environment: Dev-env on Socialtext Virtual.)

Go to your Socialtext Open server with a web browser.
On the machine you are browsing from, you will need to modify your hosts file.
On a Windows machine this will be something like: C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts.
On Mac/*nix, this will be /etc/hosts.
Add a line to your hosts file: (ipnumber) (hostname). For example, '192.168.1.181 wikidemo'
Now you can point your browser to that ipnumber and it should resolve correctly.

Now, log in with the administrative username and password you created in the step above. With this account, you should be able to invite new users and configure your workspace.

You can also log in with the email address "demo@socialtext.com" and user "demouser". This user has some, but not all, administrative privileges.

Change your password

Although not mandatory, you may want to change the password for the demo user on your VM. Everyone in the world knows that your username and password are "demo", and can log in to your VM with root privileges.

Notes on DHCP network setup

In order to use the DHCP setup, one of two things have to happen:

Your network has DHCP set to update DNS dynamically, so that when DHCP assigns in IP, it's added to DNS as well. For example, if you have a VM called "wikidemo", and you let DHCP assign address 192.168.2.101 to it, your DNS must also know that "wikidemo" maps to 192.168.2.101. Otherwise, trying to go to "wikidemo" will not be able to find your host.

You manually add your IP to your test machine's /etc/hosts file. To do this, at the command line prompt, type ifconfig | grep cast and in the resulting text find your virtual machine's new IP number. You will need to add it to the hosts file on the machine you're browsing from (described below.) When you reboot your virtual machine, you will probably be assigned a different IP address, which you'll need to change in /etc/hosts .

I did this installation. VMWare Server, and just run but is not working. Port is 80, right?

I've found that just typing in the IP (say, http://192.168.1.105) didn't work for me, but if I typed in a page under that (http://192.168.1.105/index.cgi) it worked fine. Maybe it'll work for you :)

Hi Armaghan Saqib,

The demo user has unfettered sudo access, so to get root access to the box you can just log in as demo and type "sudo su -".

I don't see a way to add workspaces or users via the Settings page for the demouser -- must I use the CLI? I was able to create a weblog.

I used the CLI to create a new user and give it both system and account admin privileges, but logging with this account and still have no access to any admin options as described in the help for workspace administrators.

I found that the demouser account needs workspace-admin privileges for the admin workspace.

Richard is correct:

sudo -u www-data st-admin add-workspace-admin --email demo@socialtext.com --workspace admin

We will fix this in the next vmware image.

Our installation went well, but the virtual server can't send email. This makes running SocialText somewhat inconvenient. Before we dig into the linux mail configuration, I wanted to ask whether this is a limitation of SocialText Virtual, or whether there's something simple we might have overlooked?

SOLUTION: Our mail server has a private IP address in the subnet 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0. Host addresses IP range are by default excluded by the MTA exim4. We modified the exim4 configuration to allow SMTP servers with private addresses, which solved the problem.

I have managed to get the VMware started however unable to determine the VMWare IP address. Typing Ipconfig comes back with command not recognised. Is there something else I can type to get the correct VMware IP address.....

There's no files left to download on the sourceforge page, no VM and no source code. Is it a mistake or a sourceforge problem ?

Please, correct this. Thanks.
