Tennessee Democrats Still Steaming Over Racist E-Mail

The Tennessee Democratic Party is still unhappy about what they call “a slap on the wrist” for Republican Senate staffer Sherri Goforth for her e-mail depicting President Obama in what was clearly “racist” context. The e-mail was sent to her Republican colleagues but leaked to a local blogger.

The e-mail titled as a “keepsake” and circulated by Gofoth feature photographs of all the presidents, except Obama, in the place for his photo was an entirely black box with two white eyes.

A Review of Obama, McCain at Saddleback Church Civil Forum

The entire time I was watching Rick Warren, the portly pastor of Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, CA, I couldn't help but wonder how did he pull this off? What type of connections does Warren (whom I've never heard of until this 'civil forum') have that have enabled him to do the impossible, which is have both candidates clear their schedules to attend this event. Which was surprisingly well formatted and captivating. This marks the first time that both candidates were brought together to answer questions. Here's the rundown on the evening's events.

Senator Obama took the stage first in the interview style discourse.

The theme of the evening: Thoughtful.

Obama is known as a master of "reading the room," and proved that he is either wonderfully knowledgeable or wonderfully coached reciting scripture with ease. In this case said scripture was Matthew 25:40, "That whatever you do for the least of my brothers, you do for me."

Later, Obama cited welfare reform as an issue that he has changed him mind on over time. Saying that it worked better than he anticipated, and that he appreciated Clinton's plan which made "work the centerpiece of any social policy."

I guess it was to be expected that the presumptive Democratic nominee would put his Christian faith on full display in packed auditorium presumably filled with church goers. Without hesitation, Obama defined marriage as a union between a man and a woman to thunderous applause from the audience and touted the superiority of faith-based organizations in addressing crises.

Personal highlight: As a staunch anti-thomasite (I totally just made that up) it gave me great joy to hear Barack Obama definitely state that he would not have appointed Supreme Court justice Clarence Thomas to the highest court in the land.

From this civil forum we can deduce that Barack Obama believes in:

Jesus
Welfare Reform
Roe vs Wade
The Existence of evil
Civil Unions
Higher taxes for those making more than $250,000 a year
Incentives for teachers

The theme of the night: direct.
My first thought upon seeing John McCain: why is he so old?

No doubt John McCain's varied life experiences have have fostered within the Senator a great deal of wisdom. Which was exhibited every time he wasn't talking about the issues.

My admiration for the Senator from Arizona deepened as he discussed America's greatest moral shortcoming as a lack of desire to serve a cause greater than our self-interest as well as his famous refusal to be dismissed early from a Vietnamese POW camp. Which is, of course a Testament to the remarkable character of John McCain.

However, just as he was able to engage me on a personal level, he lost me just as quickly with quips like calling David Petraeus "one of the great miltary leaders in American history."

Then, of course, he lost me again we he called Ronald Reagan one of the greatest president's in American history.

During both comments, I must say that I rolled my eyes so hard that they have yet to recover.

Unsurprisingly, John McCain stuck to his conservative guns. According to him, he will be pro-life president, and would support a constitutional amendment defining marriage as between a man and a woman. He even promised to find Osama Bin Laden "If he has to follow him to the gates of hell."

Beyond that I couldn't get passed the fact that war hero chose to constantly refer to the audience as "my friends."

McCain has obviously been working on the delivery of his message, impressivley utilizing pathos throughout his inquisition making for what I hate to admit was a more engaging interview than Senator Obama.

John McCain believes in:

Offshore drilling
Pro-Life
Vouchers
Low Taxes

McCain is right as Americans "our best days are ahead of us" but the bigger question is: is the same true for John McCain?

Karen Stevens, Tovah Calderon and Teresa Kwong had a lot in common. They had good performance ratings as career lawyers in the Justice Department's civil rights division. And they were minority women transferred out of their jobs two years ago -- over the objections of their immediate supervisors -- by Bradley Schlozman, then the acting assistant attorney general for civil rights.

Schlozman ordered supervisors to tell the women that they had performance problems or that the office was overstaffed. But one lawyer, Conor Dugan, told colleagues that the recent Bush appointee had confided that his real motive was to "make room for some good Americans" in that high-impact office, according to four lawyers who said they heard the account from Dugan

New committee will investigate civil rights murders

The House passed a bill Wednesday to establish a new division of federal prosecutors and FBI agents focused strictly on cracking unsolved murders from the civil rights era. The bill, which is also moving swiftly through the Senate, would authorize $10 million a year over the next decade to create a unit at the Justice Department to pursue cases that have sat cold for decades. It also would earmark $2 million per year in grants for state and local law enforcement agencies to investigate cases where federal prosecution isn't practical, and another $1.5 million to improve coordination among investigating agencies.

New Orleans still not safe from flooding

Even after construction, many in New Orleans still face a flood risk:

If a 100-year storm were to hit today, for example, parts of the Gentilly and Lakeview neighborhoods, in the northern part of the city, would probably still take on at least 8 feet of water. But the report shows that the vulnerable areas within those neighborhoods are much smaller than they were before Hurricane Katrina, thanks to the Corps’ substantial improvements to the 350-mile levee system, the floodwalls, pumps and gates.

I'm sure that "much smaller" does not make those who are still vulnerable feel any safer. Would the army still find this shortfall acceptable if the zip code of these neighborhoods was 90210?

AIDS shows no signs of slowing in Africa

No Gay Marriage Ballot Item for Mass.

Today marked another victory for same sex couples in Massachusetts:

Massachusetts lawmakers threw out a proposed constitutional amendment Thursday that would have let voters decide whether to ban gay marriage in the only state that allows it.

The vote _ which came amid heavy pressure to kill the measure from Gov. Deval Patrick and legislative leaders _ was a devastating blow to efforts to reverse a historic 2003 court ruling legalizing same-sex marriage.

"Today's vote is not just a victory for marriage equality. It was a victory for equality itself," said Patrick, who had lobbied lawmakers up until the final hours to kill the measure. (WaPo)

CBS did an 60 Minutes special on the "Stop Snitching" phenomenon within the black community, and I am truly angered by this foolishness. Right now I'm really ashamed to be a fan of hip-hop music, and the worst part about the whole damn thing is the interview with the kids. This stuff looks black people look very ignorant, and these kids buy into this bull not knowing that its all about the cash for rappers.
