How to raise your IQ

How to raise your IQ:
Interesting article on the correlation between I.Q. and education by Nicholas D. KRISTOF in the NY Times.

If intelligence were deeply encoded in our genes, that would lead to the depressing conclusion that neither schooling nor antipoverty programs can accomplish much. Yet while this view of I.Q. as overwhelmingly inherited has been widely held, the evidence is growing that it is, at a practical level, profoundly wrong.

“
The Guest House

This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they are a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice.
meet them at the door laughing and invite them in.

Be grateful for whatever comes.
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.
”

- Jelaluddin Rumi (found on www.gratefulness.org )

“
IF

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or, being hated, don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise;

If you can dream – and not make dreams your master;
If you can think – and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with triumph and disaster
And treat those two imposters just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to broken,
And stoop and build ‘em up with wornout tools;

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breath a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: “Hold on”;

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings – nor lose the common touch;
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run -
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And – which is more – you’ll be a Man my son!
”

- Rudyard Kipling.

How to be an artist

Poem by Joseph Beuys.

English version (freely translated by myself):

Let yourself fall.
Learn to observe snakes.
Plant impossible gardens
Let someone dangerous in for tea.
Make small Signs that say “yes”
and spread them all over your house.
Become a friend of freedom and uncertainty.
Look forward to dreaming. Cry at the movies.
Swing as high as you can on a swing at moonlight.
Maintain different moods.
Refuse to be “responsible”. DO IT OUT OF LOVE.
Take a lot of naps.
Pass on money. Do it now.
The money will follow.
Laugh a lot. Bathe in the moonlight.
Dream wild, imaginative dreams.
Draw on the walls. Read every day.
Imagine you are enchanted.
Giggle with children. Listen to old people.
Open yourself. Dive in. Be free.
Praise Yourself. Let go of fear.
Play with everything. Preserve the child in you.
You are innocent.
Build a castle of covers
Get wet. Hug trees.
Write loveletters.

Original version:

Lass Dich fallen.
Pflege verschiedene Stimmungen.
Verweiger Dich “verantwortlich” zu sein. TU ES AUS LIEBE.
Mach eine Menge Nickerchen.
Gib Geld weiter. Mach es jetzt.
Das Geld wird folgen.
Lache eine Menge. Bade im Mondlicht.
Träume wilde, phantasievolle Träume.
Zeichne auf die Wände. Lies jeden Tag.
Stell Dir vor, Du wärst verzaubert.
Kicher mit Kindern. Höre alten Leuten zu.
Öffne Dich. Tauche ein. Sei frei.
Preise Dich selbst. Lass die Angst fallen.
Spiele mit allem. Unterhalte das Kind in Dir.
Du bist unschuldig.
Baue eine Burg aus Decken.
Werde nass. Umarme Bäume.
Schreibe Liebesbriefe.

“
The ROAD AHEAD or the ROAD BEHIND

I think the fates must grin as we denounce them and insist,
The only reason we can’t win is the fates themselves have missed.
Yet, there lives on the ancient claim-We win or lose within ourselves,
The shining trophies on our shelves can Never win tomorrow’s game.
So you and I know deeper down
There is a chance to win the crown,
But when we fail to give our best,
We simply haven’t met the test
Of giving all and saving none
Until the game is really won.
Of showing what is meant by grit,
Of playing through not letting up,
It’s bearing down that wins the cup.
Of taking it and taking more
Until we gain the winning score
Of dreaming there’s a goal ahead,
Of hoping when our dreams are dead,
Of praying when our hopes have fled.Yet, losing, not afraid to fall,
If bravely we have given all,
For who can ask more of a man
Than giving all within his span.
That giving all, it seems to me,
Is not so far from VICTORY.
And so the fates are seldom wrong,
No matter how they twist and wind;
It’s you and I who make our fates,
We open up or close the gates
On the ROAD AHEAD or the ROAD BEHIND
”

- George Joseph Moriarty

Freedom of choice = Happiness ?

I grew up thinking freedom of choice is an unequivocally good thing, that happiness is correlated with the amount of choice we have: the more freedom, the happier, right?

But what if that was not true?

Research into the correlation between freedom of choice and happiness yields surprising results as shown in these two videos.

In this talk, he shares insights and graphic unseen photos from the Abu Ghraib trials. Then he talks about the flip side: how easy it is to be a hero, and how we can rise to the challenge.

Notes

For those of you who are interested there’s a very good German movie inspired by the experiment called Das Experiment.

To Be or Not to Be: A Gestalt approach to Coaching

To Be or Not to Be: A Gestalt approach to Coaching:
For those of you who are curious about Coaching or Gestalt, I am posting a very good article by John Leary-Joyce.
John L-J is an experienced Gestalt therapist and coach, he is the founder of the Academy of Executive Coaching located in London.

Excerpts:

If we threw a party and invited all the key influences on Gestalt we’d have interesting mixture of guests Freudian Analysis’s, Zen Buddhists, Gestalt Psychologists, Existential Philosophers, Psychiatrists, Anarchists & Social Constructivists. Drawn from a period of ego centric, individualistic US in the 50’s & 60’s, that was anti-establishment, discovering sexual liberalism and spiritual awakening aided by mind altering substances. You have the context for an unusual party, where it would be hard to imagine guests agreeing with each other and hosted by a radical couple called Fritz & Laura Perls.

Gestalt Principle 3 - Paradox of Change
Change happens when you become more of who you are
Rather than when you try to be what you are not.

The Road Less Travelled: Giving up

Somewhere in the sixties, Dr.Scott Peck, a US psychiatrist, wrote a self-help book that became wildly popular and is still read at this day. He called it The Road Less Traveled, after the last lines of a Robert Frost poem.
I was very impressed by the great sensitivity and common sense of Dr.Peck’s writing. It’s hard to believe that his own life turned out so poorly. I guess some people can see the truth with great clarity but that does not mean they can live it. Here is an excerpt about giving up:

Things all humans have to give up at some point to live a successful happy life:

The state of infancy, in which no external demands need be responded to

The fantasy of omnipotence

The desire for total (including sexual) possession of one’s parents

The dependency of Childhood

Distorted images of one’s parents

The omnipotentiality of adolescence

The agility of youth

The sexual attractiveness and potency of youth

The fantasy of immortality

Authority over one’s children

Various forms of temporal power

The independence of physical health

And, ultimately, the self and life itself

Elephants never forget

In 1986, Mkele Mbembe was on holiday in Kenya after graduating from Northwestern University.

On a hike through the bush, he came across a young bull elephant standing with one leg raised in the air. The elephant seemed distressed, so Mbembe approached it very carefully.

He got down on one knee and inspected the elephant’s foot and found a large piece of wood deeply embedded in it.

As carefully and as gently as he could, Mbembe worked the wood out with his hunting knife, after which the elephant gingerly put down its foot.

The elephant turned to face the man, and with a rather curious look on its face, stared at him for several tense moments.

Mbembe stood frozen, thinking of nothing else but being trampled. Eventually the elephant trumpeted loudly, turned, and walked away.

Mbembe never forgot that elephant or the events of that day.

Twenty years later, Mbembe was walking through the Chicago Zoo with his teenaged son.

As they approached the elephant enclosure, one of the creatures turned and walked over to near where Mbembe and his son Tapu were standing.

The large bull elephant stared at Mbembe, lifted its front foot off the ground, then put it down. The elephant did that several times then trumpeted loudly, all the while staring at the man.

Remembering the encounter in 1986, Mbembe couldn’t help wondering if this was the same elephant.

Mbembe summoned up his courage, climbed over the railing and made his way into the enclosure. He walked right up to the elephant and stared back in wonder. The elephant trumpeted again, wrapped its trunk around one of Mbembe’ s legs and slammed him against the railing, killing him instantly .

Probably wasn’t the same elephant.

Je suis tout à fait pour les énergies renouvelables et la réduction de l’emprunte carbone de notre style de vie mais, comme l’auteur, je pense que le nucléaire et le captage de C02 joueront un rôle important dans le futur immédiat.

What They Teach you at Harvard Business School

In his book he recounts his experience in the Harvard MBA. It’s cynical but it does point to parts of the US mentality and business vision I don’t subscribe to. First, the sanctification of the pursuit of unlimited personal wealth at any cost to our society. Second —and much harder to tolerate— the phony, hypocritical, self-development and integrity mumbo-jumbo that the latter is coated with.
