SIP for Skype, talking apples to an audinece of oranges

Today's Skype announcement about Skype supporting SIP inside the office VoIP PBX is great news for the less then 1% of 1% of Skype users who even care about VoIP protocols!

Skype's 400+ million users love Skype because it just works! It never fell into the technology marketing trap of distinguishing itself because it had its own protocol, if anything it tried to avoid this conversation for the past 5 years. It cheerished that its users installed the program and it worked.

Today, the Skype marketing department has finally lost the internal battle and the engineers have issued a technology press release, for a consumer product! Stupid!

I'm not attacking Skype, just disappointed that what is probably its second most valuable asset, to its voice quality, has been ignored for a protocol announcement! These press releases are never read by the common consumer because they don't understand what is being said. They immediately feel a distance being put between themselves and the company.

Would Apple ever issue a protocol press release and risk its personal relationship and high margins with its customers?...NEVER! Skype's move means that desperation for revenue attention in the enterprise market has taken over inside Skype, while this is the exact time for the marketing department to step up and earn their pay checks.

Note, the Skype "silk" codec is one of the best voice codecs to flow through the internet. Skype did not issue a press release to announce it, they just made it a part of the Skype experience and it worked...very very well!

So, why break from such a dominating consumer mindset position?

Tags: Skype, VoIP, protocols, codec, silk, Apple, PBX
