Some New Sites Launched

Some new sites which have been keeping me busy lately have recently launched I am currently looking for more web projects, so if you need help with a web site please drop me an email. My resume is posted here if you’re interested in learning more about my background.

Here are the sites:

Basikneads Catering, a catering company out in Virginia - www.basikneads.com

Services provided include HTML / CSS / JS design integration, WordPress setup and customizations. Design was provided by Openbox9, a creative company out in Washington DC. Some behind the scenes highlights (which will probably only interest other developers):

Homepage slideshow — images load via a delayed ajax request, so as to not bog down the initial page load.
JavaScript / Canvas based font replacement — The headings are rendered with the Typeface.js library, a pretty neat font replacement library that doesn’t require the use of any flash. If browsers don’t support it, then it’ll get downgraded to a close serif font.

Before Project, non-profit organization dealing with conflict prevention – www.beforeproject.org

Services provided include HTML / CSS / JS design integration, WordPress setup and customizations. Design was also provided by Openbox9. The site is relatively straight forward from a technical perspective, I added a couple WordPress customizations to help manage different elements of the site (eg random facts, customizable sidebar).

Newlife Church, a church in the Seattle area – www.newlifekitsap.com

Services provided include HTML / CSS / JS design integration, WordPress setup and customizations. Design was provided in-house by Newlife. A couple neat features to highlight:

Rotating homepage features — I used the jQuery library to provide the animation on the front end, and coded a simple admin tool in their WordPress backend to allow them to easily add/replace features.
JavaScript + Flash media player — A small and simple player on the homepage to allow people to easily play a recent sermon message from one of their church campuses.

I’ve been back in Vancouver BC for over a little over a month now, and I’m more or less settled in now. Which means I need to spend some time updating this site (finally), and various WordPress plugins. I’m going to move more towards microblogging (find me on twitter), and tantannoodles.com will become a home for my WordPress plugins, scripts, and a showcase for other web site’s I’m working on

As some may know, I’m going to be moving back to Vancouver BC this Christmas (only 2 weeks!). Kinda crazy when I think about it… I’ve been living here in Washington DC for a little over 6 years now. How time flies! And next year, I’m going to be getting married… woohoo!

Anyways… since I’m making a big move, I’m going to try and sell / unload all the random stuff I’ve collected over the years here… listed below. If you’re in the Washington DC area, and are interested in any of it, let me know. I don’t have a car, so I can’t deliver it!

Update: Flickr Photo Album– Localization Support (1.1)

A followup to my call for help last month. Combining the work of several volunteer helpers from around the Internet, the Flickr Photo Album plugin for WordPress now includes support for 12 different languages: Danish, German, Indonesia, Italian, Korean, Persian, and Simplified/Traditional Chinese, Dutch, French, Spanish, and Swedish. You don’t need to do anything extra in order to use one of these translations. If your blog is already setup with one of the supported translations (see here for WordPress documentation), then the plugin will automatically detect that translation and use it.

A couple languages are not 100% translated yet, so if you would like to help with translating the plugin, either with a new or existing language, or if you see a grammer / typo issue in an existing translation, please see this page for more information on how you can help.

Just a quick minor update to the Flickr Photo Album plugin for WordPress. This update improves compatibility with the SuperCache plugin and reduces the cache lifetime when browsing photos in the admin edit screens. No need to install this update if everything’s working fine, but otherwise please install this update, especially if you have the SuperCache plugin installed.

Also, a localized version of this plugin is almost ready for release. Languages we have on board so far are Danish, Indonesian, Italian, Korean, Persian, Simplified/Traditional Chinese, Spanish, and Swedish. If you’d like to help with translations, please see the documentation here.

Update Sep 30, 9 AM: Sorry, I think something went weird with the deploy again. If you downloaded 1.0.4 just now, please re-download and update again (particularly if you needed the two fixes mentioned above).

Updated: Amazon S3 plugin for WordPress (0.3.4)

Just a note that version 0.3.4 is now out for the Amazon S3 plugin for WordPress. This release is primarily a maintenance release, and adds compatibility with WordPress’ own plugin auto-updating system.

If you have installed any of my other plugins, please manually deactivate the plugin and delete the appropriate files from the tantan directory, and then upload the new tantan-s3 in it’s place. Your settings will be saved and carried over. If you use WordPress’ auto update system, then it may deactivate the other tantan plugins you may have installed.

Localization Help Needed (Updated)

I’m currently working on translating the Flickr Photo Album plugin for WordPress into multiple languages. If you’re fluent in English and another language, and would like to help build up the Open Source Flickr community by providing translations, then please let me know at joetan54@gmail.com.

The plugin has already been downloaded ~70,000 times now, so any translation help you provide would be very much appreciated, especially by people who’s blogs are not in English. In return for your help, you’ll get credit for the translation, along with a link to your blog. Thank you!

In related news, the plugin is now at version 1.0.3, and includes some very minor fixes.

The Flickr Photo Album plugin for WordPress has been updated and is now available. This release includes a number of bug fixes and resolves a bunch of outstanding issues. There is a new photo insert screen, that gives you many more options when inserting a Flickr photo into a blog post (screenshots). The minimum version of WordPress is now 2.5. If you need to continue using an older version of WordPress, please download and install the older version 0.99.

About this version, there isn’t really anything special or magical about this 1.0 release, other than it’s a continuation of the work that’s been going on for almost 2 years now. If you have found the plugin to be helpful and useful on your own blog, please consider making a small donation to help support its continued development. You can find a PayPal form to send a couple bucks in the plugin’s settings’ screen (where you linked the plugin to your Flickr account).

Another update to the Flickr Photo Album plugin for WordPress. This release includes a couple outstanding bug fixes, and now includes support for third party commenting services. This means you’ll now be able to allow your visitors to comment on your Flickr photos without them having to hope over to Flickr. Currently supported services include Disqus and JS-Kit. I’ll get a demo up and running soon, but for now, please see the documentation for instructions on how to enable a commenting service.
