What a Difference A Year Makes for the Bears against Stanford

California Golden Bears schedule

What a difference a year makes right? Last year the California Golden Bears defeated Stanford in Berkeley rather easily 37-16. Last year the Bears defense was able to dominate the Cardinal in fact holding them to only three points when in the first half of that game they had three opportunities in the red zone.

On the first trip there was a missed field goal, the Bears then forced a fumble by Toby Gerhart, and just before halftime the Cardinal were able to get the field goal even though they had an excellent opportunity to score a touchdown with the ball at the one yard line.

In the first half of that game the Bears offense wasn't exactly clicking either. Jahvid Best had a 60 yard run that lead to a field goal and Shane Vereen caught a 59 yard touchdown pass to get the Bears the 10-3 lead going into half time.

Yet, in the second half that's when Bears came out firing on all cylinders. Best had a touchdown run of 45 yards and three yards, also Best nearly had a third but Jim Harbaugh was given a timeout just in the nick of time before Best scored from the one yard and instead Cameron Moorah caught a one yard touchdown on a lob pass.

The Cardinal didn't get their first two touchdowns of the game until the fourth quarter when the game well out of hand.

Even though the score indicated that the Bears were scoring points on Stanford there was a different tactic used. Besides just running the football because the Bears did finish with 287 yards rushing against the Cardinal.

For the entire game the Bears had only 101 passing yards. In that game one wide receiver caught a pass and that was Verran Tucker who didn't even get a yard on his only reception and the previously mentioned Moorah and that went for a yard and a touchdown.

Kevin Riley had the most yards receiving that wasn't a running back and that was one catch for six yards. Vereen only had the one catch as mentioned before and Best had three catches for 35 yards. Meaning combined yardage receiving between Vereen and Best was 94 yards. So, 94 out of 101 yards receiving were from the running backs in that game.

Rushing wise Best went for 19 carries, 201 yards, and three total touchdowns and Vereen had 12 carries for 56 yards, and no touchdowns. Meaning that out of the total amount of yards the Bears had Best and Vereen accounted for 351 yards out of the 388 total yards.

Well the game this year was far from what happened in last years game. Although, the Bears were able to run against the Cardinal it wasn't anywhere near the success the team had last year against Stanford.

As for the Bears defense it was a struggle this year. There has been some glaring weaknesses on defense the entire season for the Bears. When the game started it look liked it was going to be a long day especially after Gerhart had a 61 yard touchdown run on the opening drive.

After that though the Bears defense clamped down on Gerhart the best they could only allowing him 75 yards more on the ground after that, but Gerhart also scored four touchdowns. On the night he carried the ball 20 times for 136 yards.

The Cardinal had a chance to win though after the Bears were able to kick a field goal to extend their lead to six, but Mike Mohamed ended the Cardinals threat with an interception.

What was impressive about the Bears offense after finding themselves down 14-0 the Bears were able to score 24 straight points to take a 10 point lead over the Cardinal.

Unlike last year though the Bears were able to get their passing game more involved then last year. In fact six receivers caught passes Anthony Miller, Skyler Curran, Tucker, Marvin Jones, Alex Lagemann, and Jeremy Ross. Two of the Bears running backs caught passes as well with Vereen catching just one pass and Isi Sofele catching the other.

The Bears passed 31 times as opposed to only 11 times last year. 17 passes were completed and 15 of those passes went to receivers. The only touchdown pass of the game by Kevin Riley went to a receiver and that was Jones.

Like Best last year, Vereen scored three touchdowns as well. Vereen carried the ball on his own 42 times for 193 yards.

In terms of yardage at one point in the game the Bears had 217 rushing yards and 217 passing yards. Of course the running game did over take the passing yards later on in the game. The total yards rushing was 242 and passing 235 and in total the Bears had 477 yards of offense as opposed to 388 last year.

As you can see though there's a quite a difference from what happened in last years game to this years.

But after watching two all-Vereen, all-the-time performances, I do wonder whether Cal’s offense is more effective with him playing full...

Robertson, who averaged 18.0 ppg in Cal’s first two games, injured the foot sometime last week and missed the Bears’ two games at Madison Square Garden. Senior forward Harper Kamp will miss his fifth straight game while still recovering from knee surgery last spring.

RANKINGS: Cal’s losses to Syracuse and Ohio State dropped the Bears from No. 13 to No. 29 in the Association Press national rankings and from No. 12 to No. 23 in the ESPN/USA Today coaches poll.

Cal has a chance to win the season series against the Cardinal for the first time in 30 years when it takes the floor against Stanford. The last time the Bears paid a visit to Maples Pavilion, they took home a four-set victory to mark the first time Cal won in Stanford's gym since 1979.

Sports > Fall :: I'm expected to say things like "Fuck the Cardinal!" or "Fuck the tree." But it wouldn't be powerful if I wrote, "Fuck Stanfurd!" It just wouldn't.

I'm expected to say things like "Fuck the Cardinal!" or "Fuck the tree." But it wouldn't be powerful if I wrote, "Fuck Stanfurd!" It just wouldn't.

So I interviewed Daily Cal alum and current Yahoo! Sports writer Michael Silver to say "Fuck Stanfurd!" for me.

(Note: Silver replaced the "o" in every Stanfurd with a "u." The Daily Californian does not regret this error).

Joseph Cannon: What are your feelings toward Stanfurd?

Michael Silver: I feel that Stanfurd is a reasonably respectable academic institution that, through clever branding and a complete disassociation from reality, has deluded its alums, students and dorky fans into believing that it is somehow a sanctuary for The Chosen Ones.

And that's kind of sad, given that it fosters entitlement, cookie-cutter passivity and a complete lack of willingness to grind that ultimately does not serve its graduates -- or society -- well.

Gee, what crew would you want to be around, and who would you trust on a sinking submarine to solve the problem? The kids who "got in" and spent the rest of their life bragging about it?

Or the ones who fought their way through the most challenging academic institution on earth, set the world ablaze along the way and lived to tell about it?

JC: What bothers you most about the Cardinal: The half-assed collection of slobs they call a band? The Farm? The mascot? The color red? Palo Alto?

MS: Those homely cheerleaders are harmless. As for the rest of it -- the things you've listed and the millions of others you haven't, like that stubby Stanfurd penis they call Hoover Tower (naturally, ours is bigger) -- it all bothers me ...

Oh, and have I mentioned that The Tree is a serial killer?

JC: "Do you find it odd that the Stanfurd Daily prints on paper, when their mascot is a source of paper? Or does it just embody the true Stanfurd spirit of 'being a total waste?'"

MS: I see that you are continuing the Daily Cal's long and decorated tradition of ass-kicking maturity and intelligence, and I know this because you did not stoop to calling this "ironic." And yet, you could have, which makes it even more awesome.

THIS would be an actual example of irony, as opposed to the faux examples cited by moronic journalists across the land, many of whom either went to Stanfurd or actually buy into the myth that it's a superior school.

These people would say or write something like, "You know, Oski is a bear, and ironically hundreds of Cal tailgaters in Palo Alto on Saturday will shit in the woods ... "

It's deplorable.

JC: Why is Cal far superior to Stanfurd?

MS: That's kind of like answering why I'm turned on by lesbian love scenes, or why the warm sun feels good on my salty face at the end of a killer beach day while I'm drinking a Dos Equis Amber and grinding up against my wife. The first answer: It just is.

And that's what I think is lost upon some people who aren't true Golden Bears and think we have some sort of inferiority complex because, they surmise, some of us didn't get in to Stanfurd.

Seriously, even if you WANTED to go to Stanford when you applied, how many minutes on the Cal campus did it take before you felt like getting down on your knees and thanking your individual chosen supreme beings (or lack thereof) that you ended up where you did?

We have a more challenging school, a better campus, a better campus community, better athletes, better coaches, hotter chicks, better fight songs, a better drinking song, better student journalists, better former student journalists and a better grip on reality.

Most important of all, we enter the world equipped to kick everyone's ass and not whine about it when we face obstacles, and that's worth a hell of a lot more than $40,000 a year and easy access to a golf course.

It's important to remember that, when we face a stiff athletic challenge (as we will Saturday), we are not risking anything when we throw ourselves out there for our team.

We are superior. We know it. We're comfortable with it. Nothing can change that, ever. When we achieve athletic success, as we must on Saturday, it's not an illustration of our excellence.

Rather, it's a validation -- a confirmation -- of all we know to be true and absolute.

JC: Favorite Cal-Stanfurd moment.

MS: Well, I was at The Play, so I'm going to go with the obvious and take you all back to the fall of 1982. I was a high school senior in L.A., and my dad was up north on business and, at the last minute, scored two Big Game tickets and flew me up to meet him.

I loved Cal but wasn't totally positive I would go to school there, and I saw-even before The Play-one of the greatest college football games I've ever seen, with driven, passionate seniors rising up to try to do one last momentous thing in their careers while battling John Elway, one of the best players ever to put on cleats.

And they had an equally passionate, hell-bent crowd urging them on, and yet in the end -- or what I thought was the end -- it wasn't enough.

Mark Harmon kicked a field goal with four seconds to go to put Stanfurd up 20-19, and I felt like I'd been punched in the gut.

We were on the alumni side, and I'll never forget what I saw next, because I swear I would have remembered it forever even if The Play had never occurred: The entire Cal student section stood up as one and began clapping and doing their pre-kickoff cheer in what I can only describe as a total and uniform act of defiance.

What I saw in that moment was a large group of people saying, "Fuck it -- we have come too far and worked too hard for this, and we do not accept this outcome. We are NOT FUCKING LOSING THIS GAME."

In other words, they were clinically insane. And that, honestly, was the moment I knew I'd go to Cal if I were admitted. Those were MY people, or at least I wanted them to be.

And then, to see that insane perspective validated in magical and unfathomable fashion and live the long, long celebration that followed -- I can't even tell you how that has impacted my life, from who I married to the threshold at which I give up (basically, there is none).

Again, people on the outside don't get it. They think The Play was zany and wacky and flukish and something unique to the rivalry. And it was, but it could only have happened one way.

Which of the two universities would field players who, given an unsolvable situation, would make up an unprecedented and brazen solution and have the audacity to pull it off?

I think you know the answer. I know you know. The Bear does not quit. The Bear will not die.

A defeat on Saturday won't change that. But a victory will be soooooo much better than a blowjob.

Beavers wanted all-or-nothing game with Ducks

That a bus full of men driving out of Eugene, Ore., was cheering the Ducks on Saturday night is not surprising at all. That it was full of Oregon State Beavers, well, that's something entirely different.

But the Beavers celebrated the Ducks thrilling 44-41 double-overtime win over Arizona just like many residents of the state that will become the center of the college football universe on Dec. 3.

"I think everybody saw the irony in that," Oregon State coach Mike Riley said.

Forgive the Beavers if they found a way to love on their rival Ducks. Their reasoning is sound, even from the perspective of this being another college football case of Hatfields and McCoys, though some Beavers fans may still be shaking off a frisson of disgust over such behavior.

"What they wanted for everybody's sake was a clear-cut deal," Riley said.

Clear cut? How about a Civil War with the stakes being nothing less than the Rose Bowl for the No. 8-ranked Ducks (9-2, 7-1) and the 16th-ranked Beavers (8-3, 6-2)?

The winner goes. The loser doesn't.

Two teams enter, one team leaves for Pasadena. The other listens to trash talk for 364 consecutive days.

Oregon hasn't played in a Rose Bowl since after winning the Pac-10 in 1994 (it also won the conference title in 2001 but was forced to play in the Fiesta Bowl because the Rose Bowl was the BCS championship game that year).

The Beavers Rose Bowl drought stretches all the way back to 1965.

Funny fact about 1965: That's the year a 12-year-old Riley moved from Wallace, Idaho, to Corvallis. The coach who led the Beavers to the Rose Bowl, Tommy Prothro, had bolted for UCLA, and the school replaced him with Dee "The Great Pumpkin" Andros, who hired Bud Riley as his defensive coordinators.

So Riley is well aware of how long it's been since the Beavers played in a Rose Bowl.

"Hopefully, there's some kind of significance there," he said, politely playing along with a reporter's insisting that there was.

Both teams will be off this weekend. It would seem to benefit the Beavers that they get extra time to prepare for the Ducks spread-option attack. Last year, the Beavers could have earned a Rose Bowl berth with a Civil War victory at home, but the Ducks and quarterback Jeremiah Masoli whipped them, 65-38.

The extra days, however, mean extra hype and extra thinking time. That's why Riley broke his normal routine and immediately talked to his team Sunday about the game and its meaning.

"It's lurking out there and everybody knows it," he said. "There's no sense not talking about it."

But his message probably sounded a lot like what Chip Kelly is telling his Ducks. The Ducks mantra is "win the day." Riley instructs his Beavers to "stay in the moment."

It might sound yawningly simple, but a consistent applying of both takes on the same message is a notable reason why these teams are in position for the big prize. Neither, after all, got caught up in dwelling on the past when things didn't start well.

Oregon's slow start at Boise State is a part of the permanent, national tapestry of the 2009 season. Oregon State's consecutive defeats to Cincinnati and Arizona were less loud but no less dispiriting for a program that was hoping to end a pattern of starting slowing.

"I had no idea who this team could be early-on," Riley said. "And when we lost those games, you naturally worry."

What happened next is Oregon State became itself -- a team that makes a late charge into the national rankings seemingly every season. The Beavers have won six of seven since the calendar flipped into October.

Now, to quote, Riley, "It's all out there in front of you."

They've got nine days to "live in the moment" and try to avoid thinking about the Rose Bowl.

Good luck with that.

We'll hopefully put most of this on Golden Nuggets, but we need to place some of it here too.

Amiyamoto (who puts up a lot of Cal band vids) is responsible for this beautiful recap of Cal fans rushing the field!

Pac-10 players of the week

Oregon quarterback Jeremiah Masoli and holder Nate Costa of Oregon and California linebacker Mike Mohamed are the Pac-10 players of the week.

Masoli and Costa played key roles in Oregon’s wild 44-41 double-overtime win at Arizona. Masoli accounted for six touchdowns. He completed 26 of 47 passes for 284 yards and three touchdowns and rushed 61 yards and three additional scores. He threw a touchdown pass with six seconds remaining to send the game into overtime and ran for the winning score in the second overtime.

Costa, Masoli's backup, is the Ducks’ holder on kicks. After the game-tying touchdown with six seconds remaining in regulation, he dug out a low snap and got the ball set on the PAT that sent the game into overtime and kept the Ducks on track for the Rose Bowl.

Mohamed keyed California’s defense in the Bears‘ 34-28 Big Game victory at Stanford. He had a team-high 10 tackles -- six solo -- including 0.5 tackle for loss. He also intercepted a pass at the 3-yard line with less than two minutes remaining in the game to preserve the win for California. It is the second player of the week honor for Mohamed this season.

SF Chronicle: Tedford Outcoached Harbaugh

Link.

Excerpt:

Jeff Tedford outcoached Jim Harbaugh on Saturday. Besides the Axe, Cal gets a national ranking (No. 21) by its name again. Number-crunching guru Steve Sanchez said its only the second time in 12 games since 2003 that the Bears have won as an underdog. (The 31-24 win at Oregon in 2007 was the other one.) Cal was 5-5 as an underdog in Tedford's first two seasons.

-- Just like Tedford will always hold Mike Mohamed dear (his interception saved a lot of questions about that taking a knee business minutes earlier), Florida State coach Bobby Bowden owes Maryland punter Nick Ferrara big time. Ferrara couldn't kick it out of bounds like his coach asked, and a big return with two minutes left set up a bowl-clinching and job-saving win for Bowden and the Seminoles.

-- Harbaugh and his play-calling late cost Toby Gerhart the Heisman Trophy. His four touchdowns against Cal and another big game against Notre Dame would have completed a late-season run to the award - just like USC's Carson Palmer in 2002. But four losses and Gerhart's out.
