The report concludes ‘one-size-fits-all’ information and data sharing policies are not achieving scientifically productive and cost-efficient information use in life sciences.

Key findings include:

* Researchers use informal and trusted sources of advice from colleagues, rather than institutional service teams, to help identify information sources and resources
* The use of social networking tools for scientific research purposes is far more limited than expected
* Data and information sharing activities are mainly driven by needs and benefits perceived as most important by life scientists rather than ‘top-down’ policies and strategies
* There are marked differences in the patterns of information use and exchange between research groups active in different areas of the life sciences, reinforcing the need to avoid standardised policy approaches

>>>Patterns of information use and exchange: case studies of researchers in the life sciences
RSS feed for this site

Forgive me for writing a review about a Christmas film in November but since The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) has become such a cult film and merchandise is sold year-round I think you can let me off.

When Tim Burton wrote The Nightmare Before Christmas little did he know what a hit it would be. It tells the story of Jack Skeleton, the pumpkin king of Halloween who becomes disillusioned with the revelry of Halloween and, whilst out walking, stumbles upon Christmas Town. So enamoured with the festivities and bright lights of Christmas, he decides to take it over and make Christmas his own.

Tim Burton brings the story alive with stop-motion animation at a time when CGI was taking off with the release of Jurassic Park (Spielberg, 1993) and the ballroom scene in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast (1991). It may have failed but it didn’t. The story is cleverly written and the use of catchy, moving songs (thanks to Danny Elfman) brings it to life. Each character is well developed and it’s quite surprising to discover that Jack is actually a kind-hearted man who just wants to enjoy Christmas and make children happy. Sally, the ragdoll; Zero, Jack’s faithful dog along with trick-or-treaters Lock, Shock and Barrell and the dastardly Oogie Boogie bring depth and the storylines surrounding all these characters are packed into a relatively short film (76 minutes).

The great thing about The Nightmare Before Christmas is that it has aged well. Sixteen years after its release it still looks as good as it did in the early nineties and is really quite appealing. In 2006 the film was digitally altered so it could be broadcast in 3D illustrating its timeless qualities.

You can borrow the original 2D version from the University Library. You’ll find it in the DVD collection on the ground floor at 791.4372 nig.

Q. What is Tim Burton’s trademark opener to the beginning credits and name a film that he does this in?

Improved relevancy ranking for EBSCO databases

EBSCO is rolling out an improved relevancy ranking system for returning search results on it's databases.

Why are EBSCO improving the relevancy ranking on their databases?

The most current article is not necessarily the most relevant one. In addition, user testing indicates that most end users have become conditioned to expect to find the most relevant articles on the first page of results.

An obvious advantage an EBSCOhost database has over a web search service is the huge value inherent in the subject headings that are applied to every article, which these web search engines do not have available. All EBSCOhost subject headings are applied by subject specialists using a controlled vocabulary, and as such, represent the most important piece to relevancy ranking. Special emphasis is placed on subject headings in determining relevancy. Although it is the combination of factors that is essential to determining precise relevance, the reason subject headings are weighted more heavily than a title name is because these are more accurate when it comes to keyword searching. If an article title was ranked higher than the subject, it is possible that articles with creative titles using metaphors, similes, euphemisms, and other creative approaches may yield inaccurate results. Due to this, subject headings are weighted highest, with article titles second, author keywords third, abstracts fourth, and when selected, full text fifth.

How does the EBSCOhost search engine determine relevancy ranking?

The EBSCOhost search engine uses a proprietary relevancy ranking algorithm that determines an article relevance to a user’s search terms by looking at several variables including:

1. Density: The number of times the word appears relative to the size of the document (more is better)
2. Prominence: Which field the word appears in – e,g., words appearing in the subject field are more important than words in full text
3. Frequency: The number of times the word appears in the database (fewer times is better)
4. Date: The system favors more current articles over older ones
5. Document Type: Book reviews have a lighter weighting, unless the word “review” is specifically used in the keyword search

To date, the new system has been applied to the following databases available to Bournemouth University: Academic Search Complete; Business Source Complete; Communication & Mass Media Complete.

The system will be applied to other databases over the coming months

HeinOnline is a great place to look for full text articles for LLB and BA law essays, but its large size can make it difficult to find articles about Scots Law. A new feature in HeinOnline makes this much easier - you can now ask HeinOnline to only show articles published within Scotland.

To do this:

Log in to the portal, go to the A-Z List of Online Resources and choose HeinOnline.

Click on Law Journal Library, and then click on the Search tab.

Choose field search from the menu at the left of the screen and enter your keywords in the search boxes.

Tick the “Run as Faceted Search” option next to the search button, and then click on search.

Using faceted search displays a list of options alongside your results. One of these new options is “Country Published”. If you click on the link for Scotland HeinOnline will only list articles from journals based in Scotland. (You might have to click on “more” under the list of countries to see the option for Scotland.)

Using this new feature will exclude articles about Scots law if they have been published in other jurisdictions. It will hide the useful articles outlining Scots law topics that often published by American university law reviews, and any Scots law articles from journals based in England, but it will be useful if you are struggling to locate Scottish material.

Now students and staff will be able to enjoy watching films, documentaries and lectures in a more modern format on PCs in the library or wherever. Another notable benefit of the project is that DVDs take up three times less space than a video, thus creating much needed room in the library.

Many thanks to all those who helped this project reach completion, especially Phil, Alice and Cherie. The next phase would be to stream the many hundreds of DVDs onto the network, although this is dependent on the University’s server capacity being increased.
