Microsoft and Web 2.0 Stuff

Like Michael Rees, Kathryn Greenhill asked me to list "web 2.0" things that Microsoft has available to provide some balance to a Murdoch University event.

By web 2.0, Kathryn meant: "To me, Microsoft plays really well in the large corporate ap space and is very good at that ... but if I want to show people about the conversation, re-mix, open access, interoperable web, then MS is not the first port of call..."

I can only agree with Kathryn's statement. Microsoft hides all its cool web 2.0 things under a bushel. In fact, the problem probably is that the coolness are hidden under many bushels, all over its web footprint. But hey, I am not from marketing; I am a mere Professional Geek. That is also why these listed are free. Some are even Free-as-in-Freedom, too.

I think it important that people get to hear, see and try alternatives before defaulting to "the known and safe." And yes, I realise can work both ways.

Another perspective, and my own opinion, is that Microsoft should not seek to do everything on the web. For instance, creating a "Microsoft Twitter Ultimate Edition 2010" is stupid. Nor should Microsoft seek to purchase every cool company that pops on the web. Again, that is my opinion. And I am the lowest on the low of the totem pole; a.k.a Individual Contributor or Sacrifical Unnamed Ensign (ref: Star Trek)

Here is an edited version of my email response; drafted quickly and by no means exhaustive. If you have other cool examples, just post a comment and I'll update the list.

http://Office.live.com for online mini-Sharepoint site for team collaboration. Office.live.com is a good place to start where people will use desktop apps for a full experience. Don't forget other online app tools like EditGrid and Zoho.

Don’t forget bing.com & associated sites (including Photosynth, Virtual Earth) as viable alternatives to google. Librarians use all sources available

www.worldwidetelescope.org

Live Is more than spaces (spaces.live.com) – there are photo storage, file storage (skydrive, as mentioned by Michael Rees in his post), and live.com integration into twitter, facebook and other online social media services.

There is a Creative Commons plugin for Microsoft Office 2007 to permit correct (cc) for remix stuff out of spreadsheets, word etc http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=D1DDBDC8-627F-415A-9B0A-97362BC9B480&displaylang=en

Other remix things: apps.live.com is a single source for our desktop apps, including LiveWriter (don’t forget that Live Writer has a whole host of plugins: http://gallery.live.com/results.aspx?c=0&bt=9&pl=8&st=5 ) and video editing stuff, too. There are Wikipedia, FIickr, Twitter and all sorts of plugins. Office 2007 SP2 has both OpenXML and ODF (for OpenOffice) support.

Don’t forget that the most-used online conversation tool in Australia is Live Messenger (MSN) which does video + audio conferencing, too

RSS into outlook… hmm, possible but not something I’d recommend. Too clunky

Don’t forget IE8; with accelerators and webslices http://www.microsoft.com/ie8 these use open formats to work

http://visitmix.com/Lab has some cool tools, including Oomph with is a Microformats toolkit (works in all browsers, uses jQuery) … I use it on my blog. Licensed under MsPL (open source, OSI approved, BSD-like)

Another good, slightly techy tool for Windows users is http://www.microsoft.com/web with the Web Platform installer. Permits installations of PHP, Wordpress etc on your Windows machine without being a rocket scientist

Tweet This Post

UX Australia – Canberra 26-28 August

The first ever UX Australia Conference is coming up in August in Canberra. Donna, Steve, Andrew and Danielle have a great line-up of speakers from Australia and overseas.

Oh, and me.

I’m doing 3 presentations (gulp!):

1. Pre-conference Workshop: Interaction Design Studio

This Half-day workshop focuses on building skills generating and critiquing user interface design solutions. It’s fast paced, with minimal lecturing and we usually have a lot of fun learning from each other as much as anything.

Warning – this workshop contains crayons!

Full Description: Interaction Design Studio

2. 101 Things I (Should Have) Learned at Interaction Design School

In this presentation, Matt Morphett are going out on a bit of a limb. The idea is to see if we can use the tips from the book “101 Things I Learned at Architecture School” to ad-lib some corresponding tips for interaction designers. Should be fast paced again, and best of all, perilous.

Full Description: 101 Things I (Should Have) Learned at Interaction Design School

3. Designing for multitouch, and multiple touchpoints

In this talk I’ll tease out more of our experiences designing the Microsoft Surface Proof of Concept for Lonely Planet which we presented at Remix last month. Get ready for a '’warts and all’” account!

Full Description: Designing for multitouch, and multiple touchpoints

See You There

This conference marks an important milestone in the increasing visibility of User Experience as a discipline in Australia. I for one think it’s going to be the start of something big. So if you are interested in information architecture, user interface design, usability or anything to do with User Experience, I think Canberra is going to be the place to be from 26-28 August. See you there!

I’m gonna talk more about that at my UXAustralia session in August in Canberra: Designing for multitouch, and multiple touchpoints.

(Thanks to Ben Harrison and Michael Kordahi for all their work encoding the videos.)

(Also, thanks to Gabriel White, from whom I pinched some ideas for this presentation.)

There’s Surface, there’s Sketchflow, there’s Blend, there’s Silverlight, Virtual Earth, Live and there’s even a session on how to create branded user experiences in SharePoint. Oh, and there’s a technical track too where you’ll stare at Visual Studio all day and wonder what they’re doing over in the creative track.

The magnanimous Fin has even offered an early bird discount. So you have two reasons to register for Remix now:

Save cash, and

Make sure you get a spot – remember Remix sold out last year.

See you there in Sydney on June 11!

April and May are busy months for public speaking.

On April 24th I’m speaking at Customer Experience – It’s Not Just About Usability for AIMIA in Sydney

On May 12th I’m speaking on “Aligning your touch-points: Creating cross-technology customer experiences” at Advertising Marketing & Media Summit 2009 in Melbourne

On May 13th I’m speaking on “User Experience Across Multiple Touch-points” at WebForward at CEBIT in Sydney

On top of that there’s WebDU and of course REMIX rapidly approaching. It’s a lot of work, but public speaking gigs are great incentives to me to keep up my reading and thinking. I hope the punters get something out of it too! :-)

The news is up on Kordesy’s blog: Remix is on again!

Remix09 is in Sydney on June 11. More details to come, but right now we’re on the lookout for Aussie presenters and showcases.

Remix is all about getting you informed and most importantly inspired about what you can do with Microsoft stuff on the web. Those who’ve been to Remix before know that we put a lot of emphasis on showcasing Australian case studies and Australian experts, so if you are working with the latest MS web- or UX-related gear and are interested in showing off in front of your peers, then get in touch with me or Kordesy.

Designers and Design Agencies – step up!

Being designer guy, it’s my job to make sure we have plenty of sessions highlighting how to create awesome user experiences. So, if you are a design/ux type and want to share your experiences with Expression, Silverlight, WPF, Surface, SharePoint etc then get in touch! No code required!

Looking forward to seeing you all at our shiny new venue: Star City (I’ve never been there before), in June.

Technorati Tags: Remix,Sydney,User Experience,Silverlight,WPF,Expression Studio,Surface

Thank you to all that attended, it’s you guys that give us the energy to do it every year. This year marked the single largest audience of any aussie REMIX crowd, and thus is it was a rockin’.

I wanted to send very special shout-outs’ to those who put energy into making sure you had the amazing time that you did.

So, [holds breath] a huge shout out to …

The partners in crime: Shane Morris, Finula Crowe and Chris Bright, these guys (+ myself) make up the REMIX core team. It’s these guys who put REMIX on this year, we keep each other sane (and insane at times), but it’s our respect for each others craft that makes REMIX better each year. Without you, REMIX wouldn’t rock. For various personal reasons, this year was the most challenging for all of us, thank you all for being so supportive of each other.

Fin doesn’t often get the public recognition that she deserves, but Fin makes sure the business end of town is taken care of, leaving Shane and I to get the best content to you guys. Thank you Fin!

The keynoters: This year’s keynote round up was one of the most exciting so far. Mega-props to …

Shane Morris: Dude, as always, it has been a pleasure sharing the stage with you. Every time we get to hang I get better at my craft, thank you for continuing to be an inspiration.

Peter Williams, CEO Deloitte Digital: for your opening, in the little time that I’ve gotten to know you, I’ve appreciated how down to earth you are, it’s been a pleasure.

Iain McDonald, Founder Amnesia Razorfish: Iain is truly an industry leader, it was an honour to have you grace our stage. Special props to Brady O’Halloran and Jack Ukleja who where the Surface “brains behind the operation”. Even special’er props to Shane Morris who’s awesome knows no bounds, he rolled up his sleeves on this one, cut code and did a great job. I am in awe of how you do anything to get the job done, especially as it inevitably takes you out of your comfort zone.

Michael Baker, GM of Technology, Incite: Michael showed us what they were getting up to earlier this year, we then threw out a wish list of things that would make it more awesome, Michael then delivered in spades and all in concurrency with the launch of his product. Mike, thanks for being such a great customer, it was our pleasure to have you share you great work at remix! Big thank you to Greg Willis for being BFF’s with Incite, it’s a great example of how Microsoft works so well with our customers.

Stuart McGrath, CIO, GraysOnline with Tatham Oddie and Damian Edwards: Stewart agreed to be involved with IE8 and REMIX and did a superstar job on stage. Stewart, it has been a pleasure getting to know you over the past few months.Thank you for making the commitment you gave to REMIX with your product launch just days before the event. And of course, your support team deserve much credit, Tatham Oddie and Damian Edwards the efforts and lengths you guys go to; to simply do great work, astonishes me every time. Damo and Tate gave up evenings to make sure the IE8 bits for Grays went live, all without being asked. You are both, without a doubt, true legends.

Joe Pollard, CEO Ninemsn: Joe, you have been one of the most accommodating CEOs that I’ve worked with in my years. Your commitment to make sure we put on the best show and that we demonstrated your solution in the best light leaves me proud. Special shout out to Chris Bright who ensured “Joe’s people” and “my people” we’re talking.

Jordan Knight, Readify: Lastly, a huge shout out to my man Jordan Knight. We asked Jordan to get involved with Ninemsn in the leadup to REMIX, Jordan’s dedication knew no bounds, he was available on IM at all hours, nothing was too difficult and he always over promised and over delivered. Jordan, working with you has set the bar for me when it it comes to working with developers, thank you!

The Speakers: The core of REMIX is the content. Every year, we try our best to deliver the leading experts in their fields, this year was no exception.

I was largely in charge of the technical content, so in no particular order …

Jordan Knight: As if your great work with the keynote demos wasn’t enough, thanks for sharing just an inkling of your knowledge with us mere mortals.

David Burela: Thanks for sharing your Azure lovin’. We’re at the beginning of the Azure journey, I look forward to watching you become an industry leader on the subject.

Damain Edwards and Tatham Oddie: I’ve already shared my views on your awesomeness. You guys keep me challenged every time we hang together, you are true industry leaders and it’s my honour to share your company.

Nick Hodge and his band of merry men: Nick, thanks for being such a leader and assembling such a great group of panellists (Richard Buggy, Lachlan Hardy, John O’Brien, JBA and Tatham Oddie). It was a great session that provoked thought.

Bronwen Zande and John O’Brien, Soul Solutions: Guys, you have become a staple at our events, you are truly passionate about our technology and continue to innovate, thank you for continuing to share your time and knowledge with us.

Jose Fajardo: What can I say, I’ve enjoyed watching you grow from the newbie Jose to an industry speaker who commands respect from his peers. It has been my honour to have you around.

A long list, I know, but these guys really deserve the credit for putting on a great REMIX.

Hope to see you all at REMIX10.

Hey guys, my Dad always said that the best meetings are held in the pub - but then again, he would say that as he is a Publican! But, that aside, I think there is a lot of truth to that whether you enjoy a drink or a lemonade. So, we've booked Oscars, a neat bar/restaurant around the corner from REMIX venue, Star City for a few drinks to wind down on what promises to be a very full day of great content! So, if you are going to REMIX be sure to save a couple of hours for the most imporatant element of any conference - the networking! We'll give you a specia VIP pass when you register on the day of REMIX to gain entry. I know I'll definitely be hanging out for a "red"! Fin
