The Realtor involved is no doubt targeting any GE Transportation employees who might be considering a move from Erie to Fort Worth following the company’s announcement April 9 that it will transfer the production of AC locomotives and additional mining-vehicle wheels production to the company’s new plant in Fort Worth.

The company’s plan could eliminate 950 union jobs and another 100 management positions in Erie.

So far, the company has made no announcement about whether anyone would be transferred from Erie to Fort Worth. A human resources manager said Erie workers are welcome to apply for jobs in Fort Worth.

Here is some news that the parents of college students or soon-to-be college students will find interesting: House lawmakers earlier today approved legislation that links student loan rates to the ups and downs of the financial markets in spite of a veto threat from President Barack Obama.
The Republican-backed the bill would allow students to dodge a scheduled rate hike for students with new subsidized Stafford loans next month, but rates could rise in coming years. Democrats largely opposed the measure — which they branded the “Making College More Expensive Act” — while the Republican chairman of the Education Committee labeled the legislation a starting point for negotiations with the Senate and White House.
Interest rates on new subsidized Stafford loans are set to double, from 3.4 percent to 6.8 percent, on July 1. Lawmakers from both parties say they want to avoid the increase but were divided on how.
Under the GOP proposal, student loans would be reset every year, pegged to 10-year Treasury notes with added percentage points. For instance, students who receive subsidized or unsubsidized Stafford student loans would pay the Treasury rate, plus 2.5 percentage points starting for loans issued after July 1.

Thanks to everyone who entered the drawing for “Wicked Good Burgers,” by Andy Husbands, Chris Hart and Andrea Pyenson. The winner is Patty Mazzarese. I’ll pop it in the mail today.

If you are not Patty Mazzarese, you are eligible to enter the drawing for “As American as Shoofly Pie: The Foodlore and Fakelore of Pennsylvania Dutch Cuisine,” by William Woys Weaver.
The hardback book is half entertaining cultural history and half recipes that will make your eyes widen. Delicious-looking ones such as Ham-And-Cheese Dumplings, the requisite Honey Shoofly Pie, as well as Peach and Yellow Tomato Pie, appear right next to Sour Marinated Rabbit and Stewed Squirrel. Those last two might be delicious, too, but I haven’t had the pleasure …

To enter the drawing, send an e-mail to jennie.geisler@timesnews.com, including your NAME, MAILING ADDRESS and NAME OF THE BOOK YOU WANT. I do not share or store this information.

Since we find ourselves at the beginning of patriotic celebration season, I thought you might like to see a Pennsylvania Dutch take on the venerable apple pie.

APPLE SCHNITZ PIE
Pastry for one 9- or 10-inch (double crust) pie
3 cups boiling water or cider
8 ounces tart apple Schnitz, (dried apple slices), see note
2 tablespoons potato starch (can use cornstarch)
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
2 cups sour cream
1/2 cup sugar
1 tablespoon unsalted butter
1. Pour the boiling water over the schnitz. Cover and let stand 4 to 6 hours or overnight until the Schnitz are soft. Drain and chop into lima-bean-size pieces, then place them in a large work bowl.
2. Combine the potato starch, brown sugar, cinnamon and allspice, working the mixture with a fork to create fine crumbs. Take out 1 tablespoon of the crumb mixture and set aside.
3. Line a 9- to 10-inch pie dish with short pastry. Dust the Schnitz with the brown sugar mixture and arrange the fruit in the pie shell, pressing down with a spoon so that the Schnitz fit together closely.
4. Mix the sour cream and sugar and spread this evenly over the fruit.
5. Combine the reserved tablespoon of brown sugar mixture with the butter and work this to a crumb texture. Scatter the crumbs over the top of the pie.
6. Bake in an oven preheated to 350 degrees for 40 to 50 minutes.
Serve at room temperature.
Note: If the supermarket doesn’t have dried apple slices, you might find them in a bulk food store such as Grammy’s in Girard.

Here’s who I like — and don’t:

I’ll break it down differently since there’s just five games. If I had to start anyone, it would be Jeanmar Gomez. I’d also look at Zach McAllister. … If you can take an ERA hit, Rick Porcello might get the win against the Twins. … Not sure what to expect from Kevin Gausman, since he’s being called up to start. He does face the Jays, so he would be a better option than Joe Blanton and Brandon Morrow. … The Angels are playing better, but Ervin Santana is still reliable. … I’m not a Ryan Dempster fan, plus the Indians are hitting everyone. … Scott Diamond has three wins, but I can’t recommend him. … Edwin Jackson has a 5-plus ERA, but the Pirates haven’t been knocking the cover off the ball. I’d still be leery with him.

The Le Moyne men’s lacrosse team might have benefited most from the expansion of the NCAA Division II lacrosse tournament’s field to eight teams from four this season.
The Dolphins (16-2) suffered their second loss of the regular season, 10-9, at Adelphi April 6, which has forced them to win out in hopes of securing a playoff spot. Yet in the past, that defeat would have signaled the end to their season.
“In Division II, it used to be you lose one game and, boy, you were in a tough spot. You lose two (and) you’re done,” longtime Le Moyne coach Dan Sheehan said during a conference call Tuesday.
The expanded field still have the Dolphins a chance. They capitalized on it by winning seven straight games to end the season, including a 7-5 win at Adelphi in the Northeast-10 Conference championship game. They followed that with wins at LIU-Post and Adelphi in the first two rounds of the national playoffs to earn a chance to face Mercyhurst in the Division II title game Sunday at 1 p.m. at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.
Mercyhurst coach Chris Ryan often has praised the new tournament format.
“It’s just been a huge boost for Division II (because) more teams got in,” he said. Ryan also said “it made a lot interesting for the players. These kids come to college to play games and play in the playoffs. If you’re going to attend Le Moyne College or Mercyhurst University, you come with the understanding that the goal is to play in May. So I think the kids welcome the challenge.”
* Ready for anything: Ryan said his team is ready for any adversity the national title game may provide. A regular season that he called “a year unlike any other” has created that level of toughness. Ryan pointed to the cold, wet weather early in the season that kept the team from practicing outside at times, as well as the comebacks and close finishes. The Lakers played four games decided in the final minutes and six one-goal games in all.
“We had a very high level of stress going into this last couple of weeks,” said Ryan, whose team needed overtime to beat Lake Erie and Limestone in the first two playoff rounds. The Lakers needed two goals in the final minute of regulation to force OT against Limestone last weekend.
“There wasn’t panic. There wasn’t desperation,” Ryan said. “The kids just knew they had to make a play. We had to make something happen.”
* High praise: Mercyhurst junior goaltender Michael Grace paid his defense a hefty compliment earlier this week. “I really do have the best defense in front of me in the country,” he said. “They make my job way easier.” The Lakers rank fifth nationally with 7.50 goals allowed per game. Le Moyne stands atop the list at 5.32 per game.
* News and notes: Mercyhurst ranks fourth nationally in scoring offense at 13.72 goals per game, three spots ahead of Le Moyne (seventh at 13.00 per game). … Both teams rank among the top 10 in nearly offensive and defensive category. … Le Moyne G Jeff White leads the nation with a 5.30 goals-against average.

You’re not alone. Memorial Day picnics loom large over the heads of everyone trying to lighten up.
Big juicy hamburgers, sausage, hot dogs, will rolling off the grill, and Aunt Evy’s brownies are sure to appear next to your sister’s potato salad.
Trying to make room for everything without blowing your pant buttons is more than a challenge. It’s often a lost cause.
Ever had a turkey burger at a cook-out? Yeah, how was it? Dry, bland, with a side of sneer by the grill master?
Well, one of my favorite Foodie websites, www.epicurious.com, offered up these Spicy Turkey Burgers today, and the ratings — by serious foodies — gave it an average of 4 forks, the best rating you can get on anything, even big juice hamburgers.
75 serious foodies can’t be wrong, right?
Well, they caught my attention at least. Many reviewers suggested adding breadcrumbs to help hold them together, and the other ingredients look yummy AND healthy, not an easy thing to pull off.
If you’re going somewhere else for dinner, make the patties and take them with you. You might have room for that brownie after all.

Postgame: For now, the SeaWolves avoided their first series loss at Jerry Uht Park with a thrilling win this afternoon. Erie will need to win Thursday to earn a series split. … Erie has lost only one series this season, which was their first road series at Reading in April. … Daniel Fields is day-to-day with a bruised rib. He will sit out Thursday and could start Friday. … Justin Souza moved to 3-0 on the season after pitching the final two outs in the top of the ninth inning. He did allow an inherited runner to score from third on a sacrifice fly but it was after Sean Nicol fought off several tough two-strike pitches. … Five home runs were hit Wednesday, all to left field. Hernan Perez hit his first home run since the third game of the season and only his second of the year. Wade Gaynor also went deep for his sixth home run, which is tied for ninth in the Eastern League. Tyler Collins is third with nine homers. … James McCann is hitting .329, which is third in the league.

Harrisburg Senators (23-22) at Erie SeaWolves (26-17)
11:05 a.m., Jerry Uht Park

NINTH INNING
Jimmy Van Ostrand strikes out swinging before Destin Hood ends a string of 15 retired batters in a row by Erie pitchers. Hood singled to center and is Harrisburg’s first baserunner since the fourth inning. Sandy Leon follows with a ground-rule double to center. Big break for Erie as it saved a run for the time being. That’ll be it for Ryan Robowski. Justin Souza comes on and Sean Nicol fights off several two-strike pitches before lifting a sacrifice fly to center to drive in a run. 6-5 Senators

The SeaWolves win it with two outs! Jamie Johnson led off with a walk before Eugenio Suarez singled to left. Instead of bunting, Hernan Perez swings away and lines out to center. Tyler Collins then flew out to left before an unusual play ended the game. James McCann singled to left to drive in Johnson. On the play, Suarez was a little aggressive with how he rounded second, which induced a throw from the left fielder. The throw ended up in the outfield area behind first base allowing Suarez to score. Harrisburg had a throw home to try and get Suarez but it was late.

EIGHTH INNING
Ryan Robowski on in relief of Victor Larez, who went 7 IP 7 H 5 ER 0 BB 5 Ks and will get a no-decision. Robowski goes 1-2-3 right away.

Wade Gaynor starts the inning with a hit off the left field wall but he stumbled around first and was thrown out going for a double. James Robbins followed with a single but Erie leaves another runner on base. Still tied 5-5.

SEVENTH INNING
Victor Larez goes 1-2-3 and has retired 11 in a row.

Michael Broadway comes on in relief of Nathan Karns, who went 6 IP 8 H 5 R 4 ER 1 BB 9 K and no-decision. Eugenio Suarez welcomes Broadway with a double off the left field wall. Hernan Perez moved him to third on a bunt but Suarez is stranded after a Tyler Collins strikeout and flyout from James McCann. Still tied 5-5.

SIXTH INNING
Victor Larez has settled down after the three-run homer. He gets two more strikeouts and has retired 8 in a row, including 5 by strikeout.

Nathan Karns strikes out the side with an infield single from Marcus Lemon mixed in. Lemon is 3-for-3 and none of his singles have gone beyond 65 feet.

FIFTH INNING
Victor Larez records his first 1-2-3 inning, including a strikeout of Justin Bloxom.

Hernan Perez with his first homer since April 6 and we are tied up 5-5. Karns retired the next three hitters after Perez’s blast. There have been five home runs in this game, all to left field. 5-5

FOURTH INNING
That was a short-lived lead for Erie. Jimmy Van Ostrand leads off with a single before Destin Hood doubles down the left field line. After Sandy Leon lined out to second. Sean Nicol crushed a three-run homer to left. Victor Larez then struck out the next to hitters but Harrisburg now leads 5-3.

Wade Gaynor gets a run back with a deep drive to left to start the inning. After two quick outs, Marcus Lemon singles and Jamie Johnson walks but Eugenio Suarez flew out to end the inning. 5-4 Harrisburg

Starting lineups
Harrisburg – CF Brian Goodwin (.260), SS Josh Johnson (.250), LF Jerad Head (.272), 1B Justin Bloxom (.242), DH Jimmy Van Ostrand (.390), RF Destin Hood (.248), C Sandy Leon (.227), 3B Sean Nicol (.222), 2B Ricky Hague (.278)
Erie – CF Jamie Johnson (.268), SS Eugenio Suarez (.200), 2B Hernan Perez (.291), RF Tyler Collins (.254), C James McCann (.333), 3B Wade Gaynor (.214), 1B James Robbins (.255), DH Luis Castillo (.250), LF Marcus Lemon (.244)

Starting pitchers
Harrisburg RH Nathan Karns (4-2, 4.38) at Erie RH Victor Larez (5-1, 3.40)

THIRD INNING
Victor Larez leaves two 3-2 pitches over the plate and it’s 2-0 Harrisburg. Ricky Hague led off by drilling a 3-2 pitch off the Erie Insurance Arena. Three batters later, Jerad Head hammered a 3-2 pitch on top of the arena. The only Erie highlight was a bare-handed running play by Wade Gaynor to cut down Josh Johnson at first.

Erie rallies for three runs. Luis Castillo started with a double down the right field line before Marcus Lemon lays down a bunt. Ricky Hague was late to cover first, putting Lemon on first and Castillo on third. Jamie Johnson then hit a chopper to first and it was played at the plate. Castillo slid under the tag to cut the lead to 2-1. Suarez moved both runners over with a bunt and Hernan Perez struck out to almost end the threat. Tyler Collins stepped in and singled to right to drive in Lemon with two outs. Johnson also tried to score and was out by about 30 feet but the catcher dropped the ball on Johnson’s slide. 3-2 SeaWolves

SECOND INNING
Jimmy Van Ostrand leads off the top of the second with a single to right field but Victor Larez bears down to retire the next three hitters. Still scoreless.

Nathan Karns is rolling and has retired 6 in a row. Scoreless after 2.

FIRST INNING
Jerad Head rips a two-out double down the left field line but Victor Larez strands him on second by getting Justin Bloxom to fly out to left.

Jamie Johnson leads off with a single to left but Erie struggles to move him around the bases. Eugenio Suarez flew out to mid-right field before Hernan Perez struck out on an awkward swing. Johnson did go to second on a wild pitch two outs but Tyler Collins grounded out to first.

Pregame: The Erie SeaWolves are looking to avoid their first series loss since early April. … Daniel Fields is missing from the starting lineup for the second straight day with a side muscle pull. He will likely miss tomorrow’s game and will be evaluated Friday to decide if he starts the Akron series. … Erie holds a four-game lead on Harrisburg in the west division. … Erie has the second-lowest ERA in the Eastern League at 3.86. … Erie has allowed the second-fewest earned runs in the Eastern League at 160. … Will Startup was placed on the disabled list and Michael Morrison is back from Triple-A Toledo. Morrison made one appearance with the Mud Hens and allowed two runs in 1 2/3 innings.
