Where: Shawnee State Park and Forest, Scioto County
Event Status: confirmed
Event Description: On May 3-5, 2013, twenty of Ohio’s top botanists and naturalists will
converge at Shawnee State Park and Forest to lead trips for Flora-Quest

Shawnee is only a morning’s drive from any corner of the state, so it’s well
within range for a weekend escape. This 63,000 acre forest, known as
“Ohio’s Little Smokies,” boasts of nine endangered, 16 threatened and 19

We have something for everybody’s interests: botany, birds, trees,
butterflies and so much more. See, touch, hear, smell -and new this year-

When: Sat Sep 15, 2012

Where: Lake Erie Metropark Hawkwatch (in Michigan) with Birding Ohio
Event Status: confirmed
Event Description: See the Birding Ohio Facebook page "event" calendar for details and to RSVP. Starts at 9 am.

Jeff Schultz will be hosting this field trip at Lake Erie Metropark. Don't miss one of the greatest migrations in birding lore that takes place every September along the banks of the Detroit River and the shores of Lake Erie.

Target birds will be Broadwing Hawk, Osprey, Bald Eagle, Sharp-shinned Hawk, Cooper's Hawk, American kestrel, Peregrine Falcon, Northern Harrier and Red-tailed Hawk, with the possibility of Swainson's Hawk and even Short-eared Owl!

Other birds of note are Fall warblers, Sometimes massive movements of Blue-jays, Blackbirds and hummingbirds. Monarch Butterflies have been known to migrate through in big numbers also.

This is a free event, but member should know there is a $5 vehicle entry fee to the park. Please bring a lunch as migrating hawks typically are very dependent on weather factors and we may not be able to leave. Be prepared though to move where the birds go. Jeff Schultz is very adept at figuring out where to relocate when the birds stop migrating over the count site. Please meet at the Boat launch at Lake Erie Metropark by 9 a.m. on September 15th.

EDT

Where: Cuyahoga Valley National Park
Event Status: confirmed
Event Description: Join OOS for a free 'late migrant/nester" day trip, Saturday, May 25, through Cuyahoga Valley National Park Attendance limited to 25

We will meet at 8 a.m. and will probably bird most of the day.

Twenty-two miles of the Cuyahoga River wind and weave through the Cuyahoga Valley, forming the backbone of Cuyahoga Valley National Park (CVNP). The river, with its associated riparian habitat, is just one element of the park's habitat mosaic. From deciduous mixed-mesophytic forests to wetland habitats, from currently cultivated agricultural lands to older field habitats in various stages of succession, the park's habitats provide opportunities for plants and animals to flourish. Over 900 plant species are found in the park, as well as 194 species of birds, 91 aquatic macro invertebrates, 43 fish, 32 mammals, 22 amphibians, and 20 species of reptiles.

Nesting species that are commonly seen (or heard) this time of year - Eastern Phoebe, Blue-winged Warbler, Warbling Vireo, Orchard Oriole, Baltimore Oriole, Acadian Flycatcher, Great Crested Flycatcher, and occasionally we find a Worm-eating Warbler in his usual nesting area. Other species we may encounter are Black-billed and Yellow-billed Cuckoo, along with other species of warblers. We will visit the Beaver Marsh (at Ira Trailhead), Horseshoe Pond (on Major Road) and other areas as time permits. Butterflies, turtles, snakes etc. can usually be seen also - this is always a very exciting day.
The 33,000 acre national park spans Summit and Cuyahoga counties - obviously we cannot cover everything in one day, so you will really want to revisit this beautiful national park. For more information, or to just let us know you are attending, please email Sue at bird2xs@yahoo.com.
Event Status: confirmed
Event Description: Saturday, June 22, 2013 – OOS Tours the Lucia S. Nash Preserve

The Nature Conservancy’s Lucia S. Nash Preserve contains Ohio’s only remaining old-growth white pine fen. Its 375 acres are part of the Cuyahoga Wetlands complex, most of which is owned by conservation organizations. This property is seldom open to the public but you can tour it this June with Craig Caldwell and TNC’s James Cole and Karen Adair.

Bald Eagles and Sandhill Cranes nest there. Other birds we may find include Hermit Thrush, Marsh and Sedge wrens, Least Bittern, Canada Warbler, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, and OOS’s own iconic Cerulean Warbler. Naturally there will also be plenty to enjoy for the botanists and butterfly and dragonfly enthusiasts among us.

We will meet at 7:30 at the Preserve for the tour and finish about midday. Space is limited and reservations are required; contact Craig (craig_caldwellATsbcglobal.net) to sign up – substitute “@” for “AT”. Detailed directions and suggestions of what to bring and wear will be provided to confirmed participants.
Where: Spring Valley Wildlife Area and Caesar Creek
Event Status: confirmed
Event Description: On Sunday, April 14, OOS will co-sponsor a field trip to Spring Valley Wildlife Area with the Cincinnati Bird Club. Spring Valley includes a 150 acre shallow lake, a 2.5 mile trail circling extensive cattail marshes, a 650 foot boardwalk, and an observation platform. There are no guarantees in birding, but expected highlights include rails, early shorebirds, swallows, and very early warblers including Louisiana Waterthrush and Yellow-throated Warbler. If lucky, we might also observe a Massasauga rattlesnake. THERE ARE NO BATHROOMS AT SPRING VALLEY. We’ll meet at 7:45 at the McDonald’s (355 S. Main Street) in Waynesville, at the intersection of Rt. 73 and Rt. 42. At 8 am, we'll caravan to the parking area for boardwalk and observation tower at Spring Valley. We’ll hopefully turn up a bittern or two, as well as species such as Virginia Rail. We will then walk around the loop trail circling the marsh. Afterwards we’ll take a look at the nearby Roxanna gravel pit. lso, if time remains, Caesar Creek State Park will be an option. We should finish by early afternoon, so pack a lunch and beverage and plan accordingly. Bathrooms and drinking water is available at Caesar Creek SP. Directions: to reach Waynesville, take Rt. 73 from either I-75 (and head east on Rt. 73) or I-71 (and head west on Rt. 73). Co-leaders for the trip include Jack Stenger and Ann Oliver (513-307-0929). There’s no need to pre-register, but you can contact OOS Southwest Regional Director Kathy McDonald for more information, at whocooksforyou@gmail.com.
