Never Joy is the slightly dark and very promising debut from 18 year old Brighton indie folk musician Ed Tullett. You’ll definitely hear some of the his influences here, specifically Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes, Iron & Wine; all listed in his music collection on Tumblr.

Never Joy was released this past December, with Ed accomplishing the writing, recording and production all in one room. The rest of the album is also pretty amazing beyond this track, Skeleton. It’s full of falsettos, beautiful indie folk harmonies, and laced with plenty of uplifting banjo plucking to lead you out of the dimly lit woods.

Waiting In the Wings sees Helsinki Finland’s Big Wave Riders return with the first taste off their debut album which is being released through Soliti in late Summer of 2012. Formed in November of 2010, Michigan’s The Appleseed Collective got a jump on the scene through endless networking and connections with the underground current of house-shows, DIY Fests, and localist enthusiasts.

“Since the very beginning we’ve found a lot of support in the local food movement. Now that we are ready a cut an album we want to support the community that got us here.” These were the words of Andrew Brown, guitarist and front-man of The Appleseed Collective, speaking of the new 2012 album Baby to Beast. A powerhouse of everything the band has come to symbolize, Beast encapsulates the Ann Arbor band’s first year of trials, tribulations, and growth, assuming the voices of a century’s worth of music with fresh perspective. The crowd-funded album has come with a green-thumb pledge of support from the band–they are donating half the profits from the first run of CDs to local non-profit Selma Cafe.

“Selma does wonderful work with local farmers,” said Brandon Smith–violinist, mandolinist and vocalist. “Their work over the last 3 years has resulted in the creation of over 20,000 square feet of year-round growing space.” The hoop-house spreading 501(c)3 is intricately tied to the band–they got their start playing Friday morning gigs for tips in the crowded Ann Arbor home where the Cafe part of the organization lives.

Having just completed a successful tour of Florida, the band has released their true debut, Baby to Beast. “This album is about everything we’ve been through, everything that’s come before us,” said Smith. “It’s all about staying true to our roots.”

Today we are featuring a new stripped down interpretation of a slightly older track from Los Angeles singer-songwriter Nico Stai, a favorite musician of mine here on our network, who has had repeat visits in the past few years.

Every now and then you when you visit a live show, the bar chatter slightly drowns out a musician, not letting up as the music plays on. Often, when visiting one of Nico’s solo shows the room tends to be tamed as soon as he starts pouring his soul through the stage speakers, while his guitar-work is perfectly punctuated with his haunting yet very relatable lyrics.

Here’s another one of those songs from Nico Stai, an acoustic live track called ‘Skies Over Your Head’, released a few
short weeks back on October 10th.

Inspired by Marci Brinker’s annual Horrorlando Halloween episodes of years past, we’ve gone and created a beast of a show as a tribute; possibly the longest on the network so far.

In the next two hours on Inzombia Radio you will hear various tales from The Sealed Book. You will witness Dracula getting a beatdown in a long lost film, will hear news updates about Zombies on Wall Street, listen to a true story of an ‘undead’ chicken, as well as being witness to many strange tales involving Zombie Cheerleaders, Zombie Cowgirls, with instrumental spooky surf tracks reverberating into the second half.

Yes, the show eventually ends with an accordion filled song of Zombie hatred from a Yiddish 496 year old vampire I ran into this past weekend at LA Oktoberfest. Yes, there’s a place where musicians instinctively flock like the Salmon of Capistrano. Well the quote goes something like that; obviously off quite a bit, but fits the random theme of the show. Just listen through here and it may suddenly appear when you hear the song about Colorado, or maybe it was the one about California.

Lots of interesting tracks abound today. We’ve got a possible aborist/experimental musician from Burbank who plays a living tree as an instrument as well as a live introduction from my trip to the The Roxy Theater in Los Angeles to see local musician Chance perform. There’s bagpipe music leading into tracks about towns in the Southern California desert, Ennio Morricone influenced pop-folk and some mutinous piratical pub-stomping rock from up the coast in Santa Barbara. We even managed to find a band that recorded their album in San Pedro to tell a tale about a sad crane operator from the Ports of LA, with a brief introduction to the town from one of my liquored up friends who speaks of Bukowski and commerce.

Welcome to episode 15 of Insomnia Radio Australia! It has been a hectic month at Channel Erk/Insomnia Radio: Australia Studios as Erk prepares to head to Europe (July – September).  For a monthly show, episode 15 seems to be a mini milestone so Erk thought that he would do something different on this episode of Insomnia Radio: Australia. Instead of the usual hour of songs, Erk thought that he would give you some highlights from interviews of Australian artists. There will be 4 artists, each representing a different genre/style. It’s a long episode but hopefully you’ll enjoy it!

Each interview segment here is not the complete interview. Because Erk wants to tease you, you will hear the first quarter of each interview. If you want to hear the rest of the interview, you can listen to the interview in full via Erk’s sister music podcast Erk FM which is where the interviews were originally heard. The full interview also features music from each artist.

Representing the acoustic side of music is Sydney singer/songwriter Kristian Jackson. Kristian joined Erk in the studio recently & even brought his guitar with him. On the full interview, you’ll be able to hear Kristian play for Erk.  Apart from singing and songwriting, Kristian also has experience in teaching music.

Kristian’s segment is followed by pop/cabaret performer Emma Dean. Originally from Brisbane, Emma currently calls Sydney home. At the time of recording the interview, Emma was mere days away from her latest show touring around the east & south-east of Australia with her “Something They Can Hold” tour. At the time of the release of this episode, she is halfway through the tour. The interview also contains discussion of Emma’s current album Dr Dream & The Imaginary Pop Cabaret.

Going harder still, the next segment features from Australian music legend Dave Evans. Still touring and rocking hard, long time Australian music fans should remember Dave from AC/DC. During the interview, Dave is very frank about life on the road, his time with AC/DC & life since. Just after this interview, Dave was about to leave on another overseas trip. On this interview, Erk is joined by his mum Judy & half of Foundry Road.

Finally, the last segment features western Sydney metal band Foundry Road. Unknown to Erk at the time, this was the boys’ first real interview. It is an interesting interview – this one is conducted in person around drummer Brad’s kitchen table. . Since then, they have played to a growing fanbase across Sydney and are getting better with every gig.

Today we take a look at a new acoustic release by Kilsyth, Scotland’s ‘The Twilight Sad’.

The band actually got their start playing a few gigs in Glasgow, creating half hour pieces of music that incorporated loads of varied instruments, tape loops from old films and folk songs, effects, toy keyboards and other quirky angles like theremin. This was all in an attempt to find their own sound that they could call their own and continue forward with.

With the latest Twilight Sad record nearing completion the band have a great 8 track acoustic EP to giveaway. Recorded at Glasgow’s Chem 19 studio in 2009, the acoustic EP features songs from their last full-length, Forget The Night Ahead, as well as last fall’s The Wrong Car 12-inch.

In the same vein of their experimental and sampled beginnings, we mixed some Scottish newsclips we found over at archive.org on the ‘SAD’ intro of this piece. Now whether that stands for Scotland Against Drugs or Seasonal Affective Disorder is for your determination ultimately. April’s assembly of thirteen local artists have all been in heavy rotation in my player in the last few months via work commutes, expeditions through the ice & snow, powder carving on top of the world, and while sitting in the dark, illuminated only by the glow of the computer monitor – headphones firmly glued to the cranium.

It’s actually been a crazy few months weatherwise, with the rare tendrils of snow (or graupel as a few local weather-snobs proclaimed) hitting the local Burbank area after a fifty to sixty or so year snow-drought. You’ll hear some crazy expletives at the head of the program in relation to this local action. On top of a record year in the Sierras a lot of rare events have been occurring, amongst some heavy heavy local burtations.

Febuary’s thirteen track show starts off in a comedic rock vein with some strong local tracks inspired by Tenacious D and even containing their rock-god DNA stamped all over them. From here we take you into a stretch of quality indie rock from the Little Heroes through White Lights, with a little Black Watch and more goodness in between.

At the last minute I decided to take the second half of the show and turn it into a dedication to a close friend’s father who passed away in late January, with some appropriate themed space-oriented tracks and mission audio from a few of those who spoke at the service.

At the tail end of the show we explain the sad situation thrust upon our friends up north at KUSF, and the fight they are taking to the FCC in a few weeks to keep Entercom and KUSC from wresting away future controls of their local airwaves through shady backroom dealings.

Turn it up, support your local artists, and please help support KUSF in the next few weeks as your local college or community radio station could get gobbled up next.

The first weekend of February 2011 saw 25 bands descend on the Lucky Australian Tavern at St Marys in Sydney’s greater west in order to raise funds for victims of the recent widespread floods in Queensland. Jointly promoted by Very Live Entertainment and RockChic Entertainment, the action started on Friday night, continue Saturday night and conclude on Sunday afternoon. Erk was there to MC the event, work the lights and perform other tasks as required.

There were a wide variety of acts among the 25 bands. There were various forms of metal and hardcore acts, a band with a keyboard player, a solo artist and a band playing acoustically because they were missing band members but did not want to cancel.  Erk had seen some of the bands on several occasions (for instance Foundry Road & Syko Sapian), some bands featured at Very Metal Xmas last year (Ilcontent, Jaded Empire, My Hollowed Fantasy, Blackened They Rise, Simulacra), bands that Erk had heard of but not seen before (LAB 64, Centred Self) as well as other bands. Some of the remaining bands were very new and/or young in age but still very good (Say It Forever, Days Gone By) while others had experienced members but were new to Erk (Upside Miss Jane, Sodomiser).

There was a great vibe about the weekend. It was a great advertisement for local music. There were a lot of happy punters and happy bands over the weekend. If you came for the 3 days, it was a very long and hot weekend with summer temperatures for most of the event over 38C/100F at an outdoor venue before a welcomed cool change on Sunday. The event was originally planned as a one day event but due to the overwhelming support from the bands, it was quickly extended to 3 days. As the event was arranged at relatively short notice in reaction to a current event, some bands who wanted to appear already had gigs elsewhere as were their fans.

One of the great things about the weekend was the variety of the music while still generally remaining faithful to the metal/hardcore genre. It was not a case of band after band screaming the same sort of screamo music for the entire weekend. There were some interesting moments over the weekend with Foundry Road’s metal version of Safety Dance being played at a gig for the first time (complete with a shirtless eXplain), Days Gone By joining the depleted Derro Dogs on stage to sing Tribute by Tenacious D (Erk also jumped on stage for this one as well), various well known bands being covered in very different styles to normal (Bananarama, The Proclaimers, Radiohead, Men Without Hats & Wheatus among others.)

The main aim apart from the entertainment factor was to raise money and this was very successful. Over the 3 days of the event, $4000 was raised which will be forwarded to the Queensland Premier’s Flood Appeal. Congratulations to everyone involved for a great weekend of music. Some music from artists on the weekend will be featured on episode 12 (February 2011) of Insomnia Radio: Australia as well as on episode 133 of Erk’s other music podcast Erk FM.

Late December 2010 & January 2011 saw devastating floods assault the Australian state of Queensland. During these floods, many people were forced from their homes. Tragically, over 20 people were killed (and some people were still missing at the time of writing). People throughout Australia and overseas were touched by the events and numerous appeals and fundraising events have been (and continue to be) organised to raise money for the victims.

One such event that has been organised in western Sydney is a massive 3 day event being held at the Lucky Australian Tavern at St Marys. Very Live Entertainment presents 26 metal/hard rock bands over 3 days/nights of entertainment. The event will be MCed by Insomnia Radio: Australia host Erk. Band merchandise and music may be available at the venue. Food and drink are available on site. The venue is close to trains and buses. Parking is available on site.

Below is the current list of bands – subject to change. Links to the Facebook event for each day have been included.

All proceeds will go directly to the Queensland Flood Victims appeal. Any donations are welcomed.

There is no such thing as Halloween in Portugal. Some people do celebrate it here, but this is not part of the history of Portugal. During the show I will explain how it started to be celebrated in Portugal, and the tradition we have that happens on the 1st of November. The metal has been slowly building in my system for the last few years, to where something drastic had to be done, fortunately right in time for Halloween this year. In this episode I detoxify using questionable methods, and luckily for you that means a break from my normal programming and a longer than normal look inside a select part of the metal scene from San Diego to Los Angeles.

Some of the bands featured today have moved on, but that doesn’t mean the music is retired. Many of the groups here are quite active and are putting out new albums, while one or two have been around since the beginnings of the LA metal scene. Styles run the gamut from traditional metal to grindcore, including other metal influenced styles of rock. embellished with plenty of operatic screams for your enjoyment. It just wouldn’t be a proper show if it wasn’t replete with death growls for you closer to the finale, ripped out of the pages of your old Dungeons & Dragons campaign and recorded in bloody howling stereo.

Summer will be arriving in a few weeks in the US and some of you coastal denizens and vacationers will be returning home from the beach, discovering that you couldn’t quite scrape the remnants of that washed up stray tar-ball from your heel.   I can only imagine Floridians delight as their kids whole feet are shellacked this summer from the deepwater oil rig volcano drift, a readily identifiable mark as to where they spent their time.

We recently featured Mimicking Birds over on our daily blog to much fanfare, and decided to place this track here on the acoustic feed. It had been several years since I had first seen the Damon Castillo Band live, performing against the sun-drenched backdrop of the Pacific Ocean up in Avila Beach at the annual SLO Vintners Festival (held each November). At the time I had signed up for his mailing list in my grape induced haze, periodically receiving e-mail notices on upcoming shows and band updates over the next few years.

As you can hear at the beginning of this episode, this podcast is now a proud member of the Association of Music Podcasting! Yeah! I’ll make much more noise about this in the next episode, because for me it’s a pretty big deal

I had recently promised you all more Wisconsin-based rock over on my Twitter account after realizing that we were sorely lacking in showcasing the home state in which our trademark java is sent out to the masses for guaranteed all night rocking.

Well this is the first musical delivery to you after that announcement. Unfortunately our featuree – Milwaukee based band, NORTHERN ROOM, played their final show on November 8th, 2008. Regardless, we really enjoyed this track that was discovered via music-discovery site ‘thesixtyone’, and really thought it was time to bring this amazingly clean live and acoustic track to your ears.

A little history on these guys. They opened for Bon Jovi at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee after winning a contest in 2006 (out of 100 bands), to open for Mr. ‘Shot Down in a Blaze of Glory’ himself. At some point the group also signed to a Japanese label, BM3 Records, and after several releases, band-member Andrew Jonathan made the decision to leave the band, at which point the band decided to also call it quite. Later before they were entirely consumed by flames from today’s featured track, they released one last effort – “Blacklight”.

Enjoy and when you get a moment check out the album from whence this version came. In late 2007 the band combined the ten tracks from both of their EPs, three live acoustic tracks, and one previously unreleased song — Home — to create Last Embrace – Deluxe Edition. This enhanced CD, which also contains a music video for Last Embrace, was independently released internationally in November of 2007. Word.

Two short years back in Copenhagen Denmark we would have loved to have been in-house when Danish indie 5-piece EFTERKLANG (translation: ‘reverberation’ or ‘remembrance’) tackled an ambitious live project, performing with the Danish National Chamber Orchestra for a limited edition LP/DVD set.

The performance occured live at DR Koncerthuset, Studie 2, Copenhagen on September 26th, 2008 and featured some notable guest musicians from Denmark who you may know – notably IR friendly artists Peter Broderick and Niklas Antonson of Slaraffenland. The live project is documented on their album ‘Performing Parades’ which is basically a performance of the entire 2007 album ‘Parades’.

We love the artistic vision in the set design for this performance (as seen in the accompanying video) and its nice that all the performers were good natured enough to wear their supplied elf hats which create a nice dimension with the faux snow-covered peaks in the background. Adding in some ‘rosy’ face paint splotches and colorful sprite-like clothing still doesn’t take away from their champion performance in this jolly fantasy setting.

Despite the fact my vocal chords seem to be shredded due to ‘tussin induced coughing spasms, I was able to record a bit last night and property set up an intro to this live selection from our friend down in Ocean Beach, CA: MIKE PINTO.

Now if you remember, we had the opportunity to place Mike on one of the San Diego Soundscape CD’s we released a few short years back through the San Diego Visitors & Convention Bureau, thanks to the efforts of Jason Evangelho and Michael Catanzaro.

Following his first CD “Little District”, and our Soundscape Comp, he released a second self-titled CD featuring this live track Addictions, more of an upbeat ska track featuring back-up accompaniment by one of the members of Chapter 11. While I initially thought the track ‘Bad Luck’ was a good choice, I listened again, and Addictions came up on top for the feature selection today.

Today’s Valentines Day live feature is from the New York based group THE FLYING CHANGE, whom the network featured on the Dose earlier last year in addition to the New York feed.

The Flying Change describe their music as landscape pop, each song edited by the writers with red pen down to the point where every moment is incredibly vivid; small fragments of melody and emotion. They’ve adeptly captured it here, and the slow build in the intro swells to a raucous cacophony of varied instrumentation that really captures a feeling of raw joy and elation. Valentines Day has been recently featured as one of the last tracks in their live arsenal, and rightfully so. We think it is the perfect choice.

We were recently sent a haunting track from local Los Angeles (Highland Park) based singer-songwriter ANNY CELSI via our friends at IODA, and we haven’t had a chance to get it up until today – the day after Thanksgiving, yet still in the holiday window.

This track was apparently being featured in iTunes Essentials’ ‘Thanksgiving Dinner’ collection (sandwiched between Adam Sandler & the Band) and is available as a promo track from Anny’s new CD “Tangle-Free World.” It was produced by Nelson Bragg of the Brian Wilson Band and music contributors include 60′s chanteuse Evie Sands, Phil Parlapiano (John Prine, Grant Lee Buffalo), Carl Byron (Michelle Shocked), and several more!!

Here’s an excerpt from a recent review… “…after the first few bars of the title track, this album grabbed my attention, and I turned the volume, up – way up!…Thanksgiving in Hollywood…starts out with a bit of a melancholy introduction then picks up the pace with plenty of jangly guitars (which I love) and some very cool organ and lead guitar contributing to a wonderful folk-pop sound. The mood is a bit dark and mysterious, yet uplifting at the same time. One of my favorite tracks on the album.” (Laurie Biagini)

Per local musician Brian Kenney Fresno’s mission statement, the holy triumvirate of activities in the Central California city of Fresno are: car theft, methlabs and chop shops.   While you often hear the area lovingly roasted for such, the city does contain many more highly notable features, such as their rich musical legacy and tight-knit community that feels a little more real and less musician-migratory than a lot of major metro areas.  This may have been a possible factor that helped put Fresno onto the top #10 list of Esquire Magazine’s ‘Cities That Rock’ list in 2004, around the time Insomnia Radio was founded.

After several weeks of online immersion into the music scene and a few years of CA music programming, I’ve compiled a list of musicians from the area that were accessible online and span over several years, all the way back to the early 80′s during the rich punk scene that continues to this day.  Some of the artists are still around, while some have moved on.  The list is by no means all inclusive as I had twice the number of artists I would have like to have featured, but only so much real estate here to fit them into.

While there is some roasting in this show, consider this a toast to the area, its musical heritage, and the musicians who continue to call Fresno and its surrounding communities home.
