: OpenDS 2.2.0 Release Candidate 3 is now available

The OpenDS development team is very pleased to announce the immediate availability of OpenDS 2.2.0-RC3, a new release candidate for OpenDS 2.2.

OpenDS 2.2 has a number of new features over OpenDS 2.0 that was released in July 2009 :

Scalable import and indexing
External changelog compliant with the Internet-Draft "Definition of an Object Class to Hold LDAP Change Records", draft-good-ldap-changelog-04.txt
Fractional replication
Extensible matching rules for time base attributes
Support for custom syntaxes based on substitution, regular expressions or enumeration
Remote server management in control panel
Recurrent tasks in control Panel
Default automatic Backup in the control panel
Separation of LDAP Servers and Replication Servers for replication
Ability to merge disjoint replication topologies
Dsconfig script friendly mode

The purpose of the Release Candidate is to solicit one last round of testing before the final release. So please test the OpenDS release with your client applications, in your environment or on your favorite platform.

: OpenDS 2.0 Stable Release is now available.

The OpenDS development team is very please to announce the availability of OpenDS 2.0.0 and it's supported companion Sun OpenDS Standard Edition 2.0.

OpenDS 2.0.0 is a promotion of OpenDS 2.0.0 Release Candidate 4, built with revision 5492, to the stable and finalized version. It can be installed with the Java WebStart QuickSetup or downloaded as a Zip file. A DSML-to-LDAP Gateway is available as a War file.

Like for previous OpenDS releases, a snapshot of the documentation wiki has been setup. The documentation is still being verified and a few links might not be functional yet. We expect it to be finalized by the end of next week.

You can find more information about OpenDS 2.0 in the release notes.

For a supported version of OpenDS, please check the Sun OpenDS Standard Edition 2.0 home page or get it directly from Sun Download Center.

The OpenDS development team is very pleased to announce the immediate availability of OpenDS 2.0.0-RC1 which is the first release candidate for OpenDS 2.0.

OpenDS 2.0 has a number of new features over OpenDS 1.2.0 that was released in February 2009 :

A new mode for Multi-Master Replication providing greater consistency and availability of data: Assured Replication
Recurring tasks allow an administrator to schedule repeated tasks such as backups
New extensible matching rules and indexing allowing comparing, ordering of data according to specific locales and languages
Better monitoring information for the server and for Replication
Full compliance with RFC 4518 and matching of UTF-8 in attributes with a DirectoryString syntax
VLV indexes are now built during the Import
Several improvements in the Control Panel
Works with IBM JVM (Java 6 SR4 required)
Works by default with JConsole and VisualVM when JMX Connection Handler is enabled
Default settings and ergonomics have been improved reducing the need for tuning parts of the server
Greatly improved performances and stability over time of those performances
Resolved a possible security issue when Pre-ReadEntry, Post-ReadEntry and Assertion Controls were enabled

Overall, over 150 issues have been fixed. However, there are still a few issues with the release candidates, and more specifically upgrading from an earlier version is not functional. This should be fixed in the next release candidate. Localization of the OpenDS messages is still work in progress and thus some messages can still appear in English when running a localized version of the server.

The OpenDS development team is very please to announce the release of OpenDS 1.0.0, the first stable release of the OpenDS project. OpenDS 1.0.0 delivers a fully compliant LDAPv3 server (*) that passes all of the compliance, interoperability and security tests suites. Furthermore, OpenDS 1.0.0 implements most the standard and experimental LDAP extensions defined in the IETF as RFCs or Internet-Drafts, ensuring maximum interoperability with LDAP client applications. With a limited footprint allowing the server to be embedded in other Java applications, OpenDS has a very rich set of APIs making it easy to extend and increase usage scope. OpenDS also supports a multi-master replication model that guarantees the high availability of the data for all operations, searches or updates. While theorically unlimited with regards to the number of masters, the OpenDS 1.0.0 server has been stressed under heavy and durable load with 4 Masters. OpenDS 1.0.0 also includes : - A 6 steps graphical installation tool that allows to have a server configured, up and running in less than 3 minutes. - A graphical status panel - A rich command line tool to perform all online administrative tasks both interactively or scripted. - Advance security and password policies - Advance backup and restore capabilities. - A DSML gateway servlet. - A complete user documentation set. Note that the defaults settings for the OpenDS server are targeted for the initial evaluator or developer, running on a machine with a limited amount of resources. So it is important to do initial tuning of the Java VM and the OpenDS server to scale. The first recommendation is to use the latest version of the Java VM (as of today Java 6 update 6 aka 1.6.0_06). Some recommendations for the Java VM settings have been published on the OpenDS Documentation Wiki . More specifically, in order to have constant performance, tuning the Garbage Collector is needed. We recommend the CMS GC or ParallelGC. Finally, OpenDS does provide better performances when the database files are cached into memory. The initial size for the DB cache is 10% of the heap size and is definitely under sized. A good rule of thumb is to allocated a DB cache size about half of the heap size if the later is below or equal to 2 GB, and for heap size greater than 2 GB to allocate a DB cache size equal to the heap size minus 1GB. While we are really happy with the first stable release of the OpenDS LDAP directory server, our roadmap includes many other features and some ambitious ones: - Native packages for OpenSolaris and Linux. - Transactions for LDAP - Assured Replication which is a replication model where a changed is assured to be received on at least 2 masters before it get acknowledge to the client application. - Access to the log of changes over LDAP in order to provide external synchronization services. - Basic management GUI for the most common tasks. - Confidentiality and Encryption negotiation through SASL - Improved performances ... : Extending OpenDS functionality with a plugin

While OpenDS is highly configurable and already provides multiple capabilities out of the box, there are some deployments that require specific constraints that cannot be handled in a generic way. For those constraints OpenDS provides several APIs to customize and extend the Directory Server. This document describes how to write, load and activate a plugin using the Directory Server plugin API. It is using a very small Directory Server plugin example to illustrate its purpose. This document is intended to help those who want to implement additional capabilities of Directory Server but do not know where to start. It is targeted at users already familiar with the Java language and a Java development environment like Java SE.
