Two Republican lawmakers criticized the Obama administration for pushing forward with health-care legislation when the economy continues to struggle, but they both stopped short of calling for Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner’s resignation.

Rep. Kevin Brady (R., Texas) made headlines last week when he said at a congressional hearing that Geithner should step down. Geithner defended himself and the actions taken by the Obama administration aimed at improving the economy.

Sen. Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.), asked on CNN’s “State of the Union” whether Geithner should resign, said, “I’m not here to call for anybody’s resignation today.”

Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R., Texas) said Brady “was right to bring it up,” but she didn’t go as far as to say Geithner should resign.

“I think we are going in the wrong direction,” she said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” “I think the president, the Congress, and Mr. Geithner are all responsible for going in the wrong direction.”

Democrats on Sunday rushed to Geithner’s defense.

“When times get tough, what happens?” asked Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D., Calif.) on “Meet the Press.” “Somebody has to point a finger. Tim Geithner isn’t responsible for the entirety of what’s out there today. And its nonsense to think that he is. It really makes me very angry.”

Lawmakers from both parties on Sunday said more needed to be done to improve the economy and combat rising unemployment, but differed over what specific measures should be taken.

Several Democrats said the White House needed to step up efforts to help businesses obtain credit and to focus more on economic issues.

Sen. Sherrod Brown (D., Ohio), asked on CNN’s “State of the Union” whether the White House was more in sync with average Americans or with Wall Street, said the White House’s advisers were “mixed.”

He said he approached Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner at a meeting last week and told him, “We need more focus on manufacturing. We need an economic policy.”

Asked if the White House needed to do a better job on the economy, Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D., N.H.) said, “Sure — I think we all need to do a better job.”

Several Republicans criticized the White House for focusing on health care while the economy continued to struggle.

“Rather than passing this job-killing health-care bill, why don’t we concentrate on getting the economy in better shape,” Sen. Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.) said on CNN. He suggested Congress “repeal the balance of the stimulus package” as one way of improving the deficit, saying it hasn’t been effective in improving the unemployment rate.

Sen. Richard Durbin (D., Ill.), said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” that one reason lawmakers wanted to wrap up debate on the health-care overhaul this year is so they could focus their attention on the economy and jobs early in 2010.

Peter Landers reports from Washington

In case all the groups trying to get Sen. Blanche Lincoln’s attention were wondering — yes, she’s noticed. Groups involved in the health-care debate, realizing Ms. Lincoln is a crucial swing vote, have been blitzing her home state of Arkansas with ads pressuring her one way or another. Speaking on the Senate floor Saturday afternoon, Ms. Lincoln cited an estimate that $3.3 million has been spent so far, mostly by out-of-state groups.

The senator repeatedly mentioned the pressure, and each time insisted it would have no effect on her. She used the ads to assert her independence, saying she would bow neither to right-wing groups nor to “liberals out of state.” But she seemed taken aback by the rancor of the debate, noting the “unbelievable type of threats” she was receiving.

Ms. Lincoln said she would vote to proceed on the bill, a critical boost for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D., Nev.). But she said she would oppose the bill in its current form if it came to a final vote because she doesn’t like its inclusion of a government-run health plan. While the public plan is supposed to be self-supporting, Ms. Lincoln predicted it would lead to a “future government bailout,” and she cited the government bailouts of General Motors and others in asserting that government is already too big.

Peter Landers reports from Washington:

Sen. Mary Landrieu of Louisiana said she’ll vote to move ahead with the Senate health bill, but has three conditions before she agrees to vote yes on the final bill. Those conditions are important, because Ms. Landrieu is one of the Democratic swing votes Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D., Nev.) needs to win final passage. Here they are:

1) More tax credits for small business to buy health insurance. The issue is a consistent theme for Ms. Landrieu, who is chairman of the Senate Small Business Committee. The bill already includes some credits at a cost of $27 billion over a decade, according to the Congressional Budget Office.

2) Measures to prevent sharp health premium increases between now and the time the bill goes into effect. Ms. Landrieu noted that several years would pass between passage of the bill and 2014, when many of its provisions take effect including the introduction of insurance exchanges where people could comparison-shop for plans.

3) “A better and bipartisan solution” to the question of a government-run, health-insurance plan sought by liberal Democrats. The current bill includes the public plan, with an option for states not to participate. But Ms. Landrieu indicated she preferred a proposal by Republican Sen. Olympia Snowe, under which the public plan would be triggered only if other steps didn’t make coverage affordable.

Will she get what she wants? Mr. Reid can probably offer something on the first two conditions, but the third one is tougher because many Senate Democrats insist the public plan must be part of the bill from the start.

By Martin Vaughan

Sen. Charles Grassley (R., Iowa) Friday refused a request from Dow Jones to release his personal tax returns.

Sen. Grassley, the senior Republican on the Senate Finance Committee, has criticized several Obama administration nominees who failed to pay taxes or to pay them on time.

“Senator Grassley files the publicly available, extensive financial disclosure report required of him as a senator,” a Grassley spokeswoman said in response to a request to review his tax returns. “If he’s nominated and accepts a post for a Finance Committee jurisdiction position in an administration, he’ll abide by committee rules and practice, including submitting his tax returns for review by the chairman and ranking member,” the spokeswoman said.

Sen. Grassley said Friday the Obama administration has “lowered the bar” for tax compliance by federal officials, after committee staff inquiries this year revealed taxes went unpaid or were paid late by a string of nominees. “We do not need anyone so badly in the federal government that we allow them to live by their own set of rules,” Sen. Grassley said at a confirmation hearing for Lael Brainard, who is up for Treasury undersecretary for international affairs.

Dow Jones also asked Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D., Mont.) to release his personal tax returns. A spokesman for Baucus did not immediately respond Friday evening.

Strict privacy laws safeguard individual tax information, and tax returns of nominees who are subject to confirmation by the Finance panel are not released to the public. Instead, a select group of staffers have access to them for vetting purposes.

In some cases — including this year with regard to former Sen. Tom Daschle (D., S. D.) and Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner — a bipartisan staff memorandum detailing specific tax irregularities is released to the public.

A five-page staff memo released Wednesday revealed Ms. Brainard paid property taxes late, questioned her claim of a home-office deduction, and detailed some glitches on tax forms for domestic employees. Sen. Kent Conrad (D., N.D.) came to Ms. Brainard’s aid, saying she had “a reputation for honesty and integrity.” But Sen. Conrad said it was “troubling that the staff found some discrepancies” in her answers to questions on her tax history.

Sen. Grassley lashed out at the Obama White House, saying nominees during previous administrations that had checkered tax histories often withdrew from consideration. He said he is frustrated that nominees like Mr. Geithner and Ms. Brainard have proceeded with support from Democrats, despite their documented tax problems. “I’m not sure if it’s worth our time, or our staffs time to be asking these questions anymore,” Sen. Grassley said.

Sen. Carl Levin, the Michigan Democrat who heads the powerful Senate Armed Services Committee, which will investigate the deadly Ft. Hood shootings, calls them an act of terrorism.

Although some officials, including fellow Democrat President Obama in the early post-shooting hours, have urged caution in characterizing the shocking shootings that caused the deaths of 13 and wounding of 29 on the Texas Army base, Levin tells C-SPAN's "Newsmakers" program in a taped interview, "It sure looks like that." <img alt="Nidal Malik Hasan, accused Ft. Hood shooter" class="asset asset-image at-xid-6a00d8341c630a53ef012875c19f03970c " src="http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/.a/6a00d8341c630a53ef012875c19f03970c-300wi" style="margin:6px 5px 6px 6px;width:270px;float:right;" title="Nidal Malik Hasan, accused Ft. They have announced they will seek the death penalty in this case.

Hasan's civilian attorney, John Galligan, says he will argue that proceedings are moving too hastily.

On the C-SPAN video, Levin says the Armed Services Committee is undergoing briefings by military investigators and has two more scheduled. When they are completed, he says, he will schedule full Senate committee hearings on the military aspect of the deadly fusillade that broke out on the military base and shocked the nation with soldiers being killed allegedly by another soldier, a Muslim officer.

Americans themselves apparently have mixed feelings over characterizing the rampage as terrorism. A Fox News poll released Friday found that 49% of those interviewed preferred to describe the incident as "a killing spree" and that 44% thought "act of terrorism" was more accurate.

The older the respondent, the more likely he or she was to call it terrorism.

Forty-five percent believe the outburst involved the shooter mentally snapping, and 38% consider him a Muslim extremist protesting American foreign policies.

Levin said his committee would be careful in its hearing to avoid complicating either the military investigation or the upcoming prosecution. But he said he intends to pursue all leads, including such questions as why e-mails between Hasan and a radical Muslim cleric in Yemen were not taken more seriously by federal anti-terrorism investigators who knew of them before Nov. 5.

But even before those hearings, Levin added, "I'm not uncomfortable with thinking that's [terrorism] the likely outcome here and a likely accurate description."

Weekly Remarks by President Obama, as provided by the White House

Hi. I’m recording this message from Seoul, South Korea, as I finish up my first presidential trip to Asia. As we emerge from the worst recession in generations, there is nothing more important than to do everything we can to get our economy moving again and put Americans back to work, and I will go anywhere to pursue that goal.
That’s one of the main reasons I took this trip. Asia is a region where we now buy more goods and do more trade with than any other place in the world – commerce that supports millions of jobs back home. It’s also a place where the risk of a nuclear arms race threatens our security, and where extremists plan attacks on America’s soil. And since this region includes some of the fastest-growing nations, there can be no solution to the challenge of climate change without the cooperation of the Asia Pacific.

With this in mind, I traveled to Asia to open a new era of American engagement. We made....

...progress with China and Russia in sending a unified message to Iran and North Korea that they must live up to their international obligations and either forsake nuclear weapons or face the consequences.

As the two largest consumers and producers of energy, we developed a host of new clean energy initiatives with China, and our two nations agreed to work toward a successful outcome at the upcoming climate summit in Copenhagen – an outcome that leads to immediate action to reduce carbon pollution.

And I spoke to young men and women at a town hall in Shanghai and across the internet about certain values that we in America believe are universal: the freedom of worship and speech; the right to access information and choose one’s own leaders.
But above all, I spoke with leaders in every nation I visited about what we can do to sustain this economic recovery and bring back jobs and prosperity for our people – a task I will continue to focus on relentlessly in the weeks and months ahead.

This recession has taught us that we can’t return to a situation where America’s economic growth is fueled by consumers who take on more and more debt. In order to keep growing, we need to spend less, save more, and get our federal deficit under control. We also need to place a greater emphasis on exports that we can build, produce, and sell to other nations – exports that can help create new jobs at home and raise living standards throughout the world.

For example, if we can increase our exports to Asia Pacific nations by just 5%, we can increase the number of American jobs supported by these exports by hundreds of thousands. This is already happening with businesses like American Superconductor Corporation, an energy technology startup based in Massachusetts that’s been providing wind power and smart grid systems to countries like China, Korea, and India. By doing so, it’s added more than 100 jobs over the last few years.

Increasing our exports is one way to create new jobs and new prosperity. But as we emerge from a recession that has left millions without work, we have an obligation to consider every additional, responsible step we can take to encourage and accelerate job creation in this country.

That’s why I’ve announced that in the next few weeks, we’ll be holding a forum at the White House on jobs and economic growth. I want to hear from CEOs and small business owners, economists and financial experts, as well as representatives from labor unions and nonprofit groups, about what they think we can do to spur hiring and get this economy moving again.
It is important that we do not make any ill-considered decisions – even with the best of intentions – particularly at a time when our resources are so limited. But it is just as important that we are open to any demonstrably good idea to supplement the steps we’ve already taken to put America back to work. That’s what I hope to achieve in this forum.

Still, there is no forum or policy that can bring all the jobs we’ve lost overnight. I wish there were, because so many Americans – friends, neighbors, family members – are desperately looking for work. But even though it will take time, I can promise you this: we are moving in the right direction; that the steps we are taking are helping; and I will not let up until businesses start hiring again, unemployed Americans start working again, and we rebuild this economy stronger and more prosperous than it was before. That has been the focus of our efforts these past ten months – and it will continue to be our focus in the months and years to come. Thanks. ###

Weekly Remarks by Sen. Mike Crapo of Idaho, as provided by Republican National Committee

This is Senator Mike Crapo from Idaho. Americans are calling on Congress for health care reform because they can no longer tolerate its skyrocketing cost.

They want us to stop the punishing increases in insurance premiums and health care costs that, year after year, are driving families across this nation to the edge. And, they want us to ensure that they have meaningful access to quality health care. But, when Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid finally revealed the 2,074-page bill that has been crafted for weeks now behind closed doors, that’s hardly what we got.
This two-thousand page bill will:

•    Drive up the cost of health care insurance and medical care, not down;
•    Increase taxes by hundreds of billions of dollars;
•    Cut Medicare for senior citizens by hundreds of billions of dollars;
•    Grow the federal government by over $2.4 trillion in new spending;
•    Push the needy uninsured into a failing Medicaid system;
•    Impose a damaging unfunded mandate on our struggling states;
• Leave millions of Americans uninsured; and
• Establish a massive governmental intrusion into management of our health care economy.

This is not true health care reform, and it is not what the American people want. This bill will result in higher premiums and higher health care costs for Americans - period.

A significant number of these provisions violate President Obama’s promise to the American people, namely that lower- and middle-class Americans would not see a tax increase under his proposals.

And, yet, this bill clearly breaks that promise as it taxes a wide range of Americans: the uninsured and the insured; families with so-called high value insurance plans; employers who create jobs or provide retiree drug coverage; individuals who need medicines or medical devices; and many others. It also levies fines and penalties on individuals, families and businesses.

Medicare faces cuts of nearly $500 billion to create the new government entitlement, even though Medicare is already facing enormous unfunded liabilities and looming insolvency. These cuts will reduce access to and the quality of care our seniors receive from a number of Medicare providers, including hospitals, nursing homes, home health and hospice services.

And, as they see their access to and quality of care reduced, seniors enrolled in the popular Medicare Advantage plans will also lose many of the benefits that they enjoy today.

We are already experiencing record deficits and debt, and yet, this bill creates a massive expansion of government, growing the size of the federal government by over $2.4 trillion over ten full years of implementation.

The legislation pushes 15 million people into the failing Medicaid system rather than giving them access to health insurance.

And, in addition to forcing the neediest of the uninsured into a failing entitlement program, this expansion will result in $25 billion in unfunded Medicaid mandates on the states, which are already struggling financially. This mandate further jeopardizes state budgets as it forces them to drive up spending.

The bill creates a government option insurance company and establishes unprecedented expansion of governmental control over health care. It establishes the government as the determiner of what kind of insurance Americans can purchase. It also imposes new federal mandates on all Americans.

The first mandate would apply to the individual: buy insurance or the IRS will collect a fine from you. Then, on employers: face a penalty if you don’t provide a government-approved health plan. The bill imposes $28 billion in new taxes on employers who don’t comply. Those new taxes would be passed along to employees in the form of reduced wages and lost jobs.
You’re going to hear a lot about this bill. That’s why I encourage you to read the bill yourself and form your own opinion. The bill is available on my website as well as a number of other Internet sites. Take a close look at how the bill is funded and who and what it covers and doesn’t cover and how it may impact you and your family. It’s a real eye-opener!

In recent months, I’ve heard from many Idahoans in my home state about health care, and they echo what Americans want in health care reform--lower costs and better quality.

What Americans really want is the kind of step-by-step reforms that Republicans have been advocating for years — common-sense ideas like the ability to purchase insurance across state lines, allowing small businesses to pool together to offer more affordable health insurance to their employees; changing the incentives in our system from numbers of procedures to quality of outcomes; eliminating pre-existing condition limitations, equalizing the tax treatment of insurance; eliminating waste, fraud and abuse and promoting wellness and prevention programs that encourage people to make healthy choices.

These are the kinds of reform that make sense and would really make a difference for all Americans. Thank you for listening. ###

You don't ever want to miss any of these remarks any week!

The president spoke to about 1,500 American troops in South Korea, telling them at one point, "You guys make a pretty good photo op."

He also promised to increase military pay, which received more applause. Obama reassured South
Koreans that his country's commitment to their security would never waver. At one point he cited as evidence of that enduring commitment a soldier there, Skip Sharp, whose father fought in the Korean War during the Truman administration.

So, let's see, that puts us about 57 or 58 years into the 100 years that, during the 2008 presidential campaign, a campaigning Sen. John McCain was attacked so much for suggesting the U.S. troop commitment would last. Now, a President Obama says there is no end in sight.

-- Andrew Malcolm

Speaking of enduring commitment, won't you please take a few seconds to click here to get free Twitter alerts of each new Ticket item? Obama's remarks to U.S. Troops at Osan Air Base, as provided by the White House

THE PRESIDENT: Hello, Osan! (Applause.) It is good to be here! (Applause.) Thank you so much.
First of all, please give Staff Sergeant Randy Gray a big round of applause for the outstanding introduction. (Applause.) I want to thank Randy for his service as one of the "Best Warriors" in the United States Army. (Applause.) Randy is a reminder that our noncommissioned officers are the strength of America's military. So thanks to Randy and to all the NCOs. (Applause.)

Thank you, Lieutenant Colonel Glover, for the invocation. And please give a big round of applause to Katherine Dennison for singing our National Anthem. (Applause.) To the 8th Army Band -- where you guys at? There they are, up there. (Applause.) You look fantastic. To all the airmen and soldiers behind me -- you guys make a pretty good photo op. (Laughter.) We are grateful for your service.

I want to thank your local leaders at Osan for welcoming me here today, including Brigadier General Michael Keltz and Colonel Tom "Big" Deale. (Applause.) Your great senior enlisted leaders, including Command Sergeant Major Robert Winzenried and Chief Master Sergeant Michael Williams. (Applause.)

We are joined by America's outstanding representatives here in the Republic of Korea: I want you guys to give it up for Ambassador Kathleen Stephens and General "Skip" Sharp. Give them a big round of applause. (Applause.)

This is a wonderful story that I just heard -- that the day Skip Sharp was born in....

...West Virginia, his dad was here -- serving in the Korean War. And that just says something about the extraordinary tradition of your family and service to our country, and we salute you for that. We are grateful to you. Thank you so much.
Listen, it is great to be here at Osan Air Base. We've got the 51st Fighter Wing. (Applause.) We've got the 7th Air Force and -- (applause) -- Air Forces Korea. (Applause.) But I know we have folks from all across U.S. Forces Korea. We've got the 8th Army and Army Forces Korea. (Applause.) We've got the Naval Forces Korea. (Applause.) We've got Marine Forces Korea (Applause.) Special Operations Command. (Applause.) And we've got a whole lot of DOD civilians, too. (Applause.)

AUDIENCE MEMBER: We love you!

THE PRESIDENT: I love you back. (Applause.)

Now, Joanne Sharp and Michelle Remington were there to greet me, and I see that we've got a whole lot of spouses and family here. (Applause.) To you and all the spouses back home, I just want to remind you that you serve and sacrifice, too, and America honors you as well.

And we are joined by our great allies: Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Lee and Mrs. Hwang. We are so nice -- so grateful that you are here. (Applause.) Thank you. Members of the Republic of Korea armed forces, and to all our KATUSA partners -- your English is better than my Korean -- (laughter) -- but let me say: Katchi Kapshida. (Applause.) For those of you guys who have not been doing your homework while you're in Korea, that means: We go together. (Applause.)

And to your neighbors -- the people of Osan and this country -- for more than a half a century, your steadfast resolve has earned you the respect of the world. And your hospitality to Americans serving far from home has earned you the gratitude of the United States. On behalf of us all, thank you to the people of the Republic of Korea. (Applause.)

Today, I'm finishing my first visit to Asia as President. In Tokyo, we renewed and deepened the U.S.-Japan alliance. In Singapore, we worked with leaders from across the Asia Pacific to strengthen the global economic recovery. And in China, we worked to advance the partnership between our two countries on global issues -- because cooperation between the United States and China will mean a safer, more prosperous world for all of us, including right here on the Korean peninsula.

In Seoul, President Lee and I reaffirmed the enduring alliance between our countries -- an alliance rooted in shared sacrifice, common values, mutual interest and mutual respect. And as we look to the future with a shared vision of our alliance for the 21st century, I made it clear -- America's commitment to the defense of the Republic of Korea will never waver, and our alliance has never been stronger.

And I want to deliver, actually, just a quick story, go a little off script. President Lee talked to me about what it was like when he was a young child here in Korea, this country having been torn by war, and the poverty that still existed in the country. And he said, I hope the American people understand how grateful we are for what you've done, because we would not be the extraordinarily strong, prosperous nation that we are, had it not been for the sacrifices of your armed services and the continued contributions that you've made.

And I thought, when the President of a country that's become so successful says that America, and America's armed services in particular, had something to do with the extraordinary success of their country -- he said, that's something you should take great pride in. And I want all of you to know that, because you are carrying that tradition on right here at Osan.

I couldn't come to the Republic of Korea without coming to see you to deliver a simple message -- a message of thanks to you and your families. Because of all the privileges of serving as President, I have no greater honor than serving as
Commander-in-Chief of the finest military that the world has ever known. (Applause.)

At every stop on my journey, one truth is clear: The security that allows families to live in peace in Asia and America, the prosperity that allows people to pursue their dreams, the freedoms and liberties that we cherish -- they're not accidents of history; they are the direct result of the work that you do, the strong alliances that we have.

That's the legacy that you are carrying forward. It is no exaggeration to say that the progress we've seen not just in Korea but in this part of the world would not have been possible without the security and stability provided by generations of American men and women in uniform. It has transformed the lives of millions of people.
Many people have to wait a lifetime to see the difference they've made. But you see the legacy of your service, and you only have to look around. Like generations before you, you've helped keep the peace on this peninsula, working with the wonderful people of the Republic of Korea as they forged a vibrant democracy, and an example that the world admires of progress and tradition go hand in hand.

Backed by our alliance, this is one of the world's most dynamic economies -- and one of America's largest trading partners -- bringing prosperity and opportunity to both our people. That's the legacy of our armed services.

Backed by our alliance, the Republic of Korea has taken on a leadership role, promoting security and stability around the world. In Iraq. In Afghanistan. In the waters off the Horn of Africa. And here in Asia, helping to prevent the spread of weapons of mass destruction. That makes us all more secure. That, too, is part of your legacy.

But the story of your service goes beyond this peninsula. For you are members of a generation that has earned your place among the greatest in American history. You volunteered in a time of war, knowing that you could be sent into harm's way. Many of you served in Iraq. (Applause.) You've given people a chance at self-government there. Others among you served in Afghanistan. (Applause.) And you've denied a safe haven to those who attacked us eight Septembers ago -- and would do so again if given the opportunity. Others among you will deploy yet again.
So you and your families have served tour after tour, year after year. And while you made sacrifices that few Americans will ever truly understand, I want to assure you -- every American appreciates what you do. I say today, on behalf of the American people: We thank you for your service. We honor you for your sacrifices. And just as you've fulfilled your responsibilities to your nation, your nation will fulfill its responsibilities to you.

So as Commander-in-Chief, here's the commitment I make. We'll make sure you can meet the missions we ask you to go on. That's why we're increasing the defense budget, to keep you the best-trained, best-led, best-equipped military in the world.

We've increased the size of the Army and Marines Corps ahead of schedule. We've approved a temporary increase in the Army. And we've halted reductions in the Navy and the Air Force -- which will give you more time home between deployments. And it will help us to put an end, once and for all, for stop-loss for those who've done their duty.

We'll spend our defense dollars wisely. So we're cutting tens of billions of dollars in waste and unnecessary projects that even the Pentagon says it doesn't need -- so that we can spend that money on building the 21st century military that we do need so we can maintain our military superiority.

And I promise you this: I will not hesitate to use force to protect the American people or our vital interests. But I will also not risk your lives unless it is absolutely necessary. (Applause.) And when it is necessary, America will back you up to the hilt. We'll give you the strategy, the clear mission, the equipment and the support you need to get the job done. That's the promise I make to you.

As you fulfill your duties, we're going to take care of your families. That's why we're increasing pay. (Applause.) That's what's called an applause line in the business. (Laughter.) That's why we're increasing child care. That's why we're increasing support to help spouses and families deal with the stress and separation of war.

And I want to commend General Sharp for working to normalize your tours -- so more of your families can join you here in Korea. And everywhere I go, from what I've heard, there's an extraordinary quality of life here for our troops. The fact that we can extend these tours a little bit longer just provides more stability and security for your families.
Finally, we pledge to be there when you come home. I mean, it's nice here, but we want you coming home. We're improving care for our wounded warriors, especially those with Post-Traumatic Stress and Traumatic Brain Injury. We're funding the Post-9/11 GI Bill -- to give you and your families the chance to pursue your dreams. We've made the biggest commitment to our veterans through the largest percentage increase requested for the VA's budget in more than 30 years.

So these are the commitments I make to you. Because you've always taken care of America, and America needs to take care of you. (Applause.) For you are the latest chapter in a long story of proud service -- a story told in quiet places of reflection and tribute, including a memorial on the National Mall in Washington, not far from the White House.

There, between the monument to Washington and the memorial to Lincoln, you can find it -- 19 statutes, a squad on patrol as they might have appeared on this peninsula six decades ago. Their packs on their backs. Clad in their helmets and ponchos. Carrying their rifles and radios. Every service -- Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines. Every race -- white, black, brown. Standing together. Serving together. Moving on. Pushing ahead. And etched into the black granite wall beside them, thousands of faces -- the nurses, the mechanics, the support personnel who served alongside them.

There, at the Korean War Veterans Memorial, beside the tranquil waters that help us remember, are the statistics of their sacrifice -- the wounded, the captured, the missing, the dead from that war. And under a bright American flag, etched in stone, are timeless words we know to be true: "Freedom is not free."

Freedom is not free. And it is paid in the service and the sacrifice of all who wear America's uniform. It was paid by their generation -- from the Pusan perimeter to the landings at Inchon, from the skies of Mig Alley to the heroism of Heartbreak Ridge. It's been paid by every generation since. And it's being paid by you -- in service that inspires us all. And for this, your country -- and generations yet unborn -- will be forever grateful.

So God bless you all. God bless the armed services, and God bless the United States of America. Thank you, everybody. (Applause.) ###

Photo: Brian Ferguson / U.S. Air Force

Based on the above video (found here), the scene in Noblesville, Ind., at the end of Sarah Palin's appearance looked more like a protest than a book signing.

Outside the Borders bookstore in Noblesville (wouldn't it be great if it was a Barnes & Noble in Noblesville?), dejected Sarah Palin fans shouted, "Sign our books! Sign our books!" as her personalized bus sputtered and prepared to drive away.

Some booed as they held fresh copies of "Going Rogue" without a wet signature from Palin. However, they were plenty wet from the rain they had been waiting in.

The estimated 100 or so disappointed fans were reportedly given signed pieces of paper, while some demanded refunds. But click here and take a look at the photo of how many fans there were during the signing.

Palin quickly addressed the disgruntled crowd in a Facebook post titled "Not enough hours in the day."

"We are working on a solution for those who were left behind," she wrote. A revisit?

According to Chicago Mayor Richard "Have a Nice Day" Daley, you can just blame (credit) that dad-gummed media again for chasing that Windy City institution Oprah off of television after compiling a personal federal reserve of only about $2.3 billion.

Oprah has announced she'll close down her daily syndicated chatfest in 2011 (see her tearful announcement video below). But she likely won't be gone long. O, gee, whatever will she call her own channel?

The diva of daytime TV, who's seen the ratings slip some since her prominent presidential campaign involvement, says she's retiring because it's time to leave and it's cold in Chicago and it's warm at her palace in Montecito, California. Also, she's got her man in the White House now.

Chicago's Democrat mayor hasn't been in a real good mood since his president failed to acquire the 2016 Summer Olympics for his adopted hometown.

According to Da Mayor, the real issue over the global star's departure is the stink the media churned up over the city closing down North Michigan Avenue for two days in September to accommodate Oprah's season-opening show taping.

The Chicago Sun-Times quotes the longtime mayor son of a longtime mayor as putting it this way:

She loves this city, and I will be talking to her, but again, that became a big rhubarb of the Chicago press: Beat up Oprah. And so, you keep kicking people, and people will leave. Simple as that.

Speaking in his usual straight face, and strangely in the past tense, Daley....

... also said: "I think she was the most successful woman that we will ever know in the history of this country." That should warm up the temperature for her -- and the rest of the planet.

According to sympathetic city officials always eager for the municipal publicity, the 48-hour closure of that main drag cost only $54,832, which Oprah's company repaid. So what's the big deal? asks the head of the Democrat machine that allowed Barack Obama to emerge on the South Side as long as he didn't make too many waves.

That price to the city, however, doesn't count the cost of increased blood pressures in thousands of notoriously genial Chicago drivers forced to divert to crowded State or Wabash Streets. No reimbursements there.

The mayor's theory may be right, although that would not account for why he and his late father stuck around town for so very many years despite their share of media bashings, scandals, trials and the like. If you have an opinion to share with the mayor, his door is always rarely open. But Daley's office phone is: 312-744-4045.

-- Andrew Malcolm

Oprah would no doubt want you to console yourself by clicking here for Twitter alerts of each new Ticket item.
A Canadian lawmaker insulted a rival member of the Parliament on Twitter -- while the fellow was sitting at the same table.

"Del Mastro should grow up (not out)," wrote Michelle Simson, a Liberal legislator, on her Twitter profile, which has 484 followers.

Mastro, a Conservative who Reuters describes as "not slim," apparently saw the message during the meeting.

Because, well, you know, anyone in the world can see Twitter (except maybe China and North Korea), including colleagues sitting at the very same table.

Reuters writes:

[Mastro] stood up in the House of Commons in front of hundreds of legislators to demand Simson say she was sorry.

"I apologize that I'm not perfect and perhaps my stature doesn't meet the criteria that some members of the House might set but I have actually battled that problem since birth," he said.

Simson then apologized publicly, saying she had been wrong.

Maybe Simson will get a boost in Twitter followers from this Canadian kerfuffle. She's actually pretty funny and makes occasional references to "The Simpsons" (not kidding).

We wish the senators and representatives in our Congress would take a page from Simson's book and drop more off-the-cuff nuggets onto their Twitter feeds. U.S. politicians -- active ones, not Sarah Palin, who prefers Facebook -- are just so boring.

Never shy about $eeking money, Democratic President Obama's Organizing for America is now using the threat of Republican Sarah Palin as an opportunity to acquire more.

It has just sent an e-mail out to its millions of supporters today pleading for urgent donations to fight the mother of five, now on her heavily-publicized, cross-country book promotion bus tour. She holds no political office currently; in fact, she's among America's unemployed, though doing quite well financially.

Perhaps you've heard a little something about Palin in recent days.

The former governor of Alaska has written a book called "Going Rogue" that details her experiences in last year's presidential campaign, her values and thoughts on various issues.

Some San Francisco bookstores are declining to sell the book. And no one really cares about her or the book, obviously (see photo above), because she only sold 300,000 copies the first day.

Some people (bipartisan) think (fear) she may become a candidate for the 2012 presidential election.

Since the Republican Party that chose her as its first female presidential ticket member last year has such a glaring national leadership vacuum these days, she's getting tons of publicity in her symbiotic hate-hate relationship with the media, which doesn't mind attracting crowds with her name either (see headline above).

Although the Democratic National Committee dismisses Palin as an ignorant non-factor, it's invested way more time and effort this week attacking Palin than selling Obama, who was on another overseas publicity trip of his own.

Attempting to use Palin as a lucrative opportunity, too, today's e-mail plaintively asks: "Please chip in $5 to help."

The committee says its goal is a half-mill in one week, chump change for the one-time senator's $750-million presidential campaign.

Today's electronic missive calls Palin "dangerous," blames (credits) her for the term "death panels," and says it needs the money to combat her lies (claims), which will be magnified in coming weeks by well-known complicit conservatives in the media.

The donation plea also warns ominously that "the rest of our opponents will likely parrot those attacks."

It says the money will be used for event organizing, advertising and funding calls to Congress in support of Obama's beleaguered healthcare legislation to counter "right-wing attack groups."

Naturally, Palin is also playing off of Palin's publicity. If you give $100 to her SARAHPac here by midday next Wednesday, she'll give you a free signed copy of "Going Rogue."

By Peter Landers

The clock is ticking up to the Senate’s vote scheduled for 8 p.m. Saturday on whether to proceed to debate on the health-care bill.

The all-important number is 60. That’s how many votes Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid needs to overcome Republican delaying tactics. With 58 Democrats and two independents in the chamber, he is considered likely to clear the bar, but we won’t know for sure until the votes are counted.

One of the last Democratic fence-sitters, Sen. Ben Nelson of Nebraska, confirmed Friday he’d vote for the motion to proceed. Nelson said he hasn’t decided whether to support the final bill.

Other points to watch for:

–How will the other wavering Democrats characterize their votes? Sen. Mary Landrieu of Louisiana and Sen. Blanche Lincoln are the senators who have needed the most wooing from Democratic leaders.

–Will any Republicans vote yes? It’s unlikely. But Reid is still hoping to get support later in the process from Maine Republican Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins.

–As speeches from both sides continue Saturday on the Senate floor, who makes the most effective case to Americans? During Friday’s debate, Republicans made a particular point of addressing older voters, saying cuts in the bill will threaten Medicare patients. Democrats say trimming the growth of Medicare spending won’t affect basic services and will help keep the system solvent.

If Reid wins the Saturday vote, the full Senate is set to start debate the bill and take up amendments after the Thanksgiving break, in the week of Nov. 30. They – or one of their surrogates – mispronounce the state’s name.

Here, it’s Nuh-VAD-uh.

Not Nuh-VAHD-uh.

Nuh-VAD-uhns are sensitive to this. We’re not sure why. More than two-thirds of residents were born outside the state and a number of them swear they’re only staying for a year (and then never leave). But President Bush and Sen. John Kerry both caught flack for not realizing that the second syllable rhymes with “dad.” Same with TV newsmen George Stephanopoulos and Brian Williams.

State Democrats, in the run-up to the 2008 presidential caucus, apparently sent all their candidates a welcome guide that included the correct pronunciation: Nuh-VAD-uh. And yet, this cycle’s campaign ads are already mangling the state’s name, which is Spanish for "snow-capped." (In Spanish, it would be pronounced Neh-VAH-dah.)

This summer, the National Education Assn. ran radio ads cheering Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, whose poll numbers could use a little pep as he seeks reelection in 2010. But the spot’s narrator repeatedly butchered Nuh-VAD-uh.

This week, Danny Tarkanian, one of the gaggle of Republicans who hope to unseat Reid, released a Web ad mocking how federal stimulus dollars were reported as going to congressional districts that didn't exist. But the narration pronounced the state as Nuh-VAHD-uh.

One wonders how this might play out in Mi-ZOOR-ee, a.k.a. Mi-ZOOR-ah. Incidentally, in the western part of the Show Me State, there's a town called Nevada. But there it’s pronounced Nuh-VADE-uh.

The Senate Ethics Committee admonished Sen. Roland Burris today for being "less than candid" about his contacts with impeached Gov. Rod Blagojevich in the months before Burris' appointment to the Senate.

In a letter to the Illinois Democrat, the ethics panel said it "found that you should have known that you were providing incorrect, inconsistent, misleading or incomplete information" during its investigation into whether Burris had been truthful about his contacts with Blagojevich associates.

The panel said, however, that it "did not find that the evidence before it supported any actionable violations of law."

By Martin Vaughan

Sen. Charles Grassley expressed exasperation over another Obama nominee’s tax problems.

“We do not need anyone so badly in the federal government that we allow them to live by their own set of rules,” Grassley, the top Republican on the Finance Committee said today at the confirmation hearing for Lael Brainard, who is up for Treasury undersecretary for international affairs.

The lapses? Late payments of property taxes, questions about her claim of a home-office deduction, and some glitches on tax forms for domestic employees, all detailed in a five-page report from Finance Committee aides.

President Barack Obama nominated the former Brookings Institution senior fellow and deputy National Economic Adviser to President Bill Clinton in March, but Senate confirmation has been stalled as committee aides scrubbed her tax history. Brainard paid a late 2008 property tax bill and cut the home-office deduction going forward, but she was not asked by the committee to amend previous returns.

Brainard’s husband, by the way, is Assistant Secretary of State Kurt Campbell. His nomination went through the Senate Foreign Relations Committee without a hitch.

Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D., Mont.), supports Brainard, and she is seen likely to be confirmed.

Grassley, meantime, slammed critics who have implied he is using the committee tax vetting process to stall Obama nominees. He said Finance Committee standards haven’t changed but the Obama administration has encouraged nominees with checkered tax histories to go forward rather than withdrawing their nominations.

A couple of Obama nominees have withdrawn over tax issues earlier this year, notably Tom Daschle, Obama’s choice to head the Health and Human Services Department, and Nancy Killefer, nominated as chief performance officer. Tax problems surfaced in the confirmation process for others including Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner; U.S. Trade Rep. Ron Kirk and HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius.

The investigative panel found that Burris’s actions reflected “unfavorably on the Senate” and that he acted inappropriately in a November 2008 phone call with the governor, and that he was “less than candid” in public and sworn statements regarding how he was tapped for the seat.

But the committee found no explicit criminal or ethical violations.

The panel also noted that a state prosecutor in the case against Blagojevich determined in June that there wasn’t enough evidence to support charges of perjury in the broader corruption investigation.

The public letter of admonition is the final word on the matter as there were no “actionable violations of the law.”

Burris was appointed by Blagojevich early this year in a cloud of scandal. Senate Democratic leaders initially fought the appointment but had little constitutional ground to block his appointment.

While he consistently denied any wrongdoing in relation to the Blagojevich corruption case, a taped November 2008 conversation in which he and the governor discuss both fund-raising and his appointment to the Senate raised repeated questions about his truthfulness in the matter.

Burris is not seeking re-election in 2010.

Mike Huckabee told the Hudson Union Society some weeks ago that Republican attacks on President Obama for everything from visiting Dover Air Force Base to opening the White House to local trick-or-treaters on Halloween are hurting the country.

Now, his comments are circulating on the net, posing a direct counter to Limbaugh, who has criticized Obama's Dover visit as a photo op.

Said Huckabee:

When he was at Dover the other day, and went there to pay respect for soldiers, I heard a lot of people on the right say, "Aw, that's just a cheap photo-op." No, I think it was the commander-in-chief of our military paying respect to a dead soldier, and I'm grateful that he did that, and I was proud of him for doing that. And I think we all -- as Americans -- should give him credit for doing that.

Perhaps cognizant of public opinion polls that show Obama personally popular with most Americans, even those who disagree with his policies, Huckabee added: "When he and Michele hosted the trick-or-treaters on Halloween, quit finding something wrong with that. Say. 'Good, I'm glad that he and the first lady are treating children to an experience at the White House.' And I just find it deplorable that some people on my end of the aisle want to find everything wrong and nothing right about the man as a man."

Finally, recalling that liberals regularly reviled George W. Bush no matter what he did, Huckabee, a former pastor, pleaded for comity.

I hated it when people did that to George Bush. They couldn't even laugh at the man's jokes. They found something wrong with everything and if we do that to Barack Obama, then shame on us, shame on us. No wonder our country is so divided when that happens.

Huckabee made the comments while on book tour for "A Simple Christmas." Republican insiders, mindful of all the attention focused on former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's "Going Rogue," are calling Huckabee's "the other book tour."

-- Johanna Neuman

Click here to get Twitter alerts of each new Ticket item.
Geithner shot back at Republicans with this line: "You gave this president an economy falling off the cliff."

But Democrats are growing critical too, with progressives arguing that the administration is tilting toward Wall Street and away from Main Street.
A New Kind of Declaration: Christian activists are holding a new conference today at the National Press Club to release the “Manhattan Declaration.” The 4,700-plus word document has over 125 original signers and affirms opposition to abortion rights and gay marriage while endorsing religious freedom and, when necessary, civil disobedience. The document is addressed to Christians, but also members of Congress and President Barack Obama. Chuck Colson, founder of the Chuck Colson Center for Christian Worldview, helped draft the document. Original signers include Cardinal Justin Rigali, Archbishop of Philadelphia, and Tony Perkins, president of the socially conservative Family Research Council.

Payback: Former Iowa GOP Rep. Jim Leach made waves last year when he bucked his party and endorsed Barack Obama for president. The Obama administration returned the favor with a choice perch as chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Leach will speak on bridging cultures today at the National Press Club.

Girl Power: World Bank President Robert Zoellick will deliver remarks today at the Council on Foreign Relations regarding women’s roles in recovery from the global financial crisis.

La Vida Latina: Labor Secretary Hilda Solis will be a featured speaker today as part of the Latino Luncheon Series.
