WordPress Wins 2009 Overall Best Open Source CMS Award

I was first introduced to WordPress about 5-6 years and it was love at first sight. From the time I started using it, I’ve never looked back or thought about shifting to another blogging platform/software. WordPress has gone a long way since then and I’ve witness it grow and mature from a blogging software into a full-featured CMS.

Being an avid WordPress user and advocate, I was happy when I found out that WordPress was recently awarded the 2009 Overall Best Open Source CMS Award by the Open Source CMS Awards. Matt Mullenweg himself was very excited about the award.

I was very excited last week to learn that WordPress has been awarded the Overall Best Open Source CMS Award in the 2009 Open Source CMS Awards. This is a landmark for us, as it is the first time we’ve won this award, and it marks a shift in the public perception of WordPress, from blog software to full-featured CMS. No small contest, the Open Source CMS Awards received over 12,000 nominations and more than 23,000 votes across five categories.

Aside from winning the Overall Best Open Source CMS category, WordPress was also 1st runner-up for the Best Open Source PHP CMS category. Making it to the #2 spot this year is a great feat considering that WordPress wasn’t even in the top 5 last year and puts WordPress ahead of Joomla. Another thing to note is that Drupal, the winner of the Best Open Source PHP CMS category, outranked WordPress only by a very slight margin, which means that WordPress has really become more popular with the users and developers over the past year.

Every member of the WordPress community, from core developer to beginning user, should be proud to be part of this momentum: congratulations to us all!

As a user, advocate and a member of the WordPress community I’m happy and proud for this recent achievement of WordPress and I certainly feel that I’m a part of this success. Btw, I just remembered that WordPress won Best Open Source Social Networking CMS in the 2007 Open Source CMS Awards two years ago.

A couple years back you’ll have a difficult time finding a good portfolio style WordPress theme thats free. These days, there are lots of very nice premium quality portfolio themes that WordPress users can choose from. One of those themes comes from Graph Paper Press and its called the Work-A-Holic theme.

Work-a-holic is a free minimalistic two and three column WordPress theme that focuses mainly on showcasing portfolios for artists, web designers, photographers and illustrators. Work-a-holic separates your portfolio from your blog, enabling easy navigation for clients in a clean, intuitive fashion. My Take:
If you’re an artist, web designer, photographer or illustrator who’s planning to create a WordPress-powered online portfolio, you should definitely check out the Work-A-Holic theme. If was gonna create my own online portfolio, I’d definitely consider this theme. Its simple and minimalistic but doesn’t lack on the features/functions that you’ll need for an online portfolio. This theme also lets you put up a blog and have it separate from the portfolio.

Basic features include widgetized sidebars, widgetized bottom bar/footer with custom widgets, built-in gravatar support, Twitter integration and nested comments support. For the portfolio section of this theme, you can have a multiple image gallery on your portfolio posts with jQuery effects on the portfolio thumbnails and if you have the WP-Post-Thumbnail plugin installed, you can choose to have a separate thumbnail.

This theme only has one color scheme but because it doesn’t use much custom graphics making it highly customizable. Customizing this theme is something that can be easily done via a few tweaks on the stylesheet and/or using your own custom background image. The Work-A-Holic theme has an option page that lets the user specify the Blog Category ID and Twitter username.

In the Work-A-Holic post page, the author has provided some links with examples of the built-in gallery script in action, portfolio category archive, blog archive and page template. There’s also a video tutorial on how to separate the blog and portfolio and setting up the images and excerpts on Work-a-Holic. The theme files also include an html file with instructions on how to install, setup and configure the Work-A-Holic theme.

The Work-A-Holic is an excellent portfolio style freemium WordPress theme and kudos to the folks at Graph Paper Press for a job well done and for creating and releasing it to the public.

Weekend Roundup #62

Hello everyone! This past weekend was a very busy one for me especially yesterday, Saturday. Friday was mostly spent doing some errands, buying groceries and stuff and preparing for the next day’s activities/programs. Saturday, we had some church-related children’s programs/activities and meetings that required us to be in church early and also made us stay until evening. It’s all good though coz these were all church related activities and this doesn’t happen every week.

Filipinos all over the world were once again made proud this weekend, when Filipino “pushcart educator” Efren Peñaflorida was named CNN Hero of the Year at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood, California Saturday evening.

Hi folks! Hope you all had a great weekend and are having a good week so far. My apologies for yet another late edition of the Weekend Roundup. The past weekend was quite busy with church-related programs and meetings. It was also marked by a special boxing event featuring the highly anticipated fight of the year between WBO Welterweight champion Miguel Cotto and Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao. Thank goodness for free live stream links, I was able to watch it for free at home without having to pay $60 for HBO’s PPV. I was very nervous at the start of the match and I was expecting Cotto to give Pacquiao a hard time. It was a great fight and congratulations to Manny Pacquiao for winning his 7th world title making him the first fighter to win 7 titles in different weight divisions.

Anyways, enough of that and on with this weeks edition of the Weekend Roundup. Hope you guys enjoy it!

What is Google Chrome OS?

I had some people ask me what Google Chrome OS is so I decided to blog about it here and share it with those of you who also don’t know what it is or how it works. Google Chrome OS is an open source operating system based on Linux that was designed by Google to exclusively work with web applications and was officially announced last July. It has a minimalist user interface (UI) that closely resembles the Chrome web browser. Google Chrome OS is targeted for users who spend most of their time or do their work on the Internet and intended for secondary devices like netbooks.

To make it easier for regular users to understand how it works, the folks over at Google in collaboration with Epipheo Studios have produced this simple video that tells how the Chrome OS was created.

Last November 19th, led by Vice President Sundar Pichai and Engineering Director Matthew Papakipos, Google held a press conference in its Mountain View, California headquarters and demonstrated an early version of Google Chrome OS. Below is the video of the demonstration.

So what do you think about Google Chrome OS? IMO, its a great operating system especially for users who are always connected to the Internet and do a lot of cloud computing. Its also an ideal OS for netbooks and other portable devices because the hardware requirements are minimal. I don’t know what Google’s plans are but it would be awesome if they could incorporate a Google Gears-like feature into it so users could also use it offline.

As you’ve seen in the video demos, Google Chrome OS booted up in only 7 seconds! Another cool thing about it is that it consumes 60 times less drive space than Windows 7. Hewlett-Packard, Acer, Adobe, Asus, Lenovo, Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, Freescale and Intel are some of the big named companies who are developing hardware/devices for this operating system.

Btw, if you’re a software developer/engineer you can play around with it’s source code which was also released last November 19th with an open source license under the name Chromium OS.

I’ve been a Google Adsense user since June of 2005 and I’ve also registered and tried out their Affiliate program but I’ve never tried Google Adwords even though I already have an account there. I wanted to try it out before but decided not to because I didn’t want to ~~waste~~ spend my money on something that I wasn’t sure of. Well I had a pleasant surprise a couple months back when I received an email from Google for a free $100 Adwords Coupon. It was sent to me as a Google Analytics user. Below is an excerpt of the I received:

Guess what it was? Another free $100 Adwords Coupon, but this time it was credited to my Adsense publisher account. Below is a photo of the letter containing the Adwords coupon.

Since this is my first time to try Google Adwords, I’m still not sure how I’m gonna use it. I don’t wanna miss the chance to get the $100 credit which will expire at the end of this month so I still have a few more days to think about it and decide how I’m gonna use it. If any of you guys have some experience or tips that you can share on how to use Adwords, I’d greatly appreciate it.

Black Friday Deals

A couple more days before Black Friday, the most awaited day of the year for most if not all shoppers here in the United States. Black Friday is the Friday after Thanksgiving (fourth Thursday of November) which is also the beginning of the traditional Christmas shopping season. For those who are not familiar with what Black Friday is, its the one day of the year where retailers like Best Buy, Walmart, Sears, Target, Macy’s, etc. offer doorbuster deals (very low-priced items designed to draw people into a sale). Because of the limited number and insanely low prices of these products, shoppers camp out a day or two outside these stores just so they can be the first persons to enter once the store opens their doors. Some large retailers even open their stores as early as midnight to accommodate these shoppers, while some open up at 5 AM.

Personally, I haven’t gone shopping on a Black Friday mainly because I don’t want to camp out in front of the store a day or several hours before the store opens up. There’s also the danger of getting hurt in a stampede as there’s been several cases before where people died because of a stampede happening in front of the store entrance during Black Friday.

This year though, I’m tempted to go and join in the fray after I saw a very good deal on external hard drives on two stores – Walmart and Target. I’ve been planning on getting a bigger external hard drive because the one I have now (320GB) is almost full.

There are tons of deals for different types of products in different stores. Just do a Google search of “black friday deals” and you’ll get several websites that provide detailed information on different Black Friday Deals for each retailer/store.

Each store has their own rules and regulations especially for doorbusters and also different store hours so make sure you check them out first before you decide to go out and go shopping on Black Friday. One tip I can give you, is to check out the store a day or two before the sale so you know where the items you want are located. Btw, if you do decide to go shopping on Black Friday keep safe and have fun!

Blog Updates 11.09

Did my last blog update post about a couple months back and I’ve done some changes to the blog so I decided to do another blog update post. These blog update posts have become a “regular” habit of mine here on JaypeeOnline and I consider it as some kind of “checkpoint” to help me remember the plugins I installed/uninstalled on the period of time. Its also a way for me to inform my readers of the changes I’ve made to the blog especially the changes I’ve made front-end wise, changes in the blog theme, design, layout, etc.

The changes I’ve listed below are the changes I’ve made since my previous blog update.

Uninstalled Plugins

LinkWithin – Displays recommended stories and associated thumbnails from your blog.
Most Commented – Retrieves a list of the posts with the most comments.
Popularity Contest – keeps a count of your post, category and archive views, comments, trackbacks, etc. and uses them to determine which of your posts are most popular.
Global Translator – automatically translates your blog in the following 41 different languages.

I removed LinkWithin because based on my observation, visitors weren’t using it that much and it uses up too much space and makes the overall post page layout more cluttered. Uninstalled the Most Commented and Popularity Contest plugins because my theme has built-in functions that make both plugins redundant. Removed the Global Translator plugin because of security issues and I will discuss more about it in an upcoming post.

Theme Authenticity Checker – scans theme files for potentially malicious or unwanted code.
TweetMeme Button – Adds a button which easily lets you retweet your blog posts.
WP Super Cache – Very fast caching plugin for WordPress.
Yoast Breadcrumbs – Outputs a fully customizable breadcrumb path.

Installed the Where did they go from here plugin and placed it beside the Related Posts to display posts that readers visited after viewing/reading that current post. This is very useful because it lists some posts that aren’t displayed in the Related Posts and lists posts that may also be of interest to the new reader. I installed the Theme Authenticity Checker to help me verify the themes that I review in my WordPress Theme reviews. The TweetMeme button is the small graphic displayed on the upper left portion of each post and displays the number of times the post was RT’d (retweeted) and enables the reader to easily RT the post.

I installed WP Super Cache in the efforts of solving the problems I had with my previous web host. It didn’t work because the problem was not with my blog but with my web host its just that they didn’t want to admit it and they were trying to put the blame on my blog.

I’ve been planning on implementing breadcrumb navigation on my blog for a long time now but didn’t get to do it. I finally found time to install Yoast’s Breadcrumbs plugin. This plugin displays the path and location of the post/page that the reader is currently viewing. Helps users to easily navigate through the blog/website. The breadcrumb path is the text displayed at the top most part of each post and page (Home > Post).

Other Changes
I didn’t do much changes to the blog theme and layout except for some minor tweaks on the sidebar.

Added the JaypeeOnline Facebook Fan Page at the sidebar.
Removed the Entrecard widget. Still thinking about whether I should put it back or not.
Moved the Trackbacks/Pingbacks section below the Comment form.

I think thats it, I mean that’s all the changes I’ve done since my last blog update. Sometimes my memory fails me so I might have missed one or two changes and if I did, I’ll update the post later.

If I were you I’ll use the Adword coupon, not ‘coz it’s free but it will do good to drive more (and more) traffics to your sites..

Google Adword users conclude that it really works fine and great in making (your) site’s traffic by percent.. But then it’s you who will then decided.. ^^
