Num pais tão pequeno com tão poucas companhias profissionais, não faz sentido nenhum não falar de todas, estamos a falar de 2 linhas de texto. Não conseguimos perceber esta "distração", mas que já está feito já!e agora quem é que pode fazer com que as companhias e festivais "omitidos" nesta publicação sejam compensados?? o blog "marionetas em portugal" existe para que a arte da marioneta em Portugal seja divulgada e apoiada "coisa" a nosso ver não aconteceu de uma maneira justa e equilibrada nesta "Enciclopédia". A quem de direito que faça alguma coisa!!!

Finalmente foi apresentada a Enciclopédia da marioneta. Saiu em Charleville Mézieres. Lançada pela Unima Internacional.

Sabiamos que estava em preparação.

No entanto foi-nos informado que o nome da Companhia Teatro e Marionetas de Mandrágora não consta na mesma, bem como o de outras estruturas profissionais do nosso país.

Antes de proferirmos qualquer declaração ou acção sobre o assunto solicitamos o vosso apoio na elucidação destes factos.

Terrapin Theatre Company in Hobart is selling off many puppets from its 35 year history and that of its predecessor, Tasmanian Puppet Theatre.

The puppets will be on sale on Wednesday 25 November from 4pm to 5pm at 23 Wellington Street, North Hobart. They are priced from $10 to $180, with the majority of older puppets at $25. CASH ONLY payment required on the day. Please don’t bring kids with you as there is as there is little room and it is semi-industrial.

When I was at the 2nd National Puppetry Summit in Hobart in 2006 there was a window display of a wide variety of puppets from Terrapin from over the years. This puppet with its huge head and little body was my favourite. It was made by Greg Methe for the 1997 production The Fork.

I also loved these platypus, quoll, and Tasmanian tiger puppets that were made by Axel Axelrad. I took a number of photos of other puppets in the display, a few of them are here.

Porquê? Porque não conheciam e é muito fácil ficarmos com ideias tolas acerca de alguém que não conhecemos!” Só conhecendo o passado podemos perceber o presente… de uma forma muito alegre e brincalhona explica as origens dos Postais de Boas Festas, da Arvore de Natal, dos Presentes, do Presépio, do Bolo Rei e até do próprio “Pai Natal”!!! Lançamento de petição à Assembleia da República pelos direitos dos trabalhadores a recibos verdes nas contribuições à Segurança Social

Antes da dívida temos direitos! É preciso agir perante as injustiças que a precariedade nos impõe. Foi isso que levou estes 4 movimentos - APRE! (Activistas Precários), FERVE (Fartos/as d'Estes Recibos Verdes), Plataforma dos Intermitentes do Espectáculo e do Audiovisual e Precários Inflexíveis - a juntarem-se para promover uma petição à Assembleia da República, que reunirá milhares de assinaturas para combater as injustiças nas contribuições para a Segurança Social dos trabalhadores e trabalhadoras a recibo verde. A maioria dos recibos verdes são falsas prestações de serviços. São 900 mil pessoas que deveriam ter um contrato de trabalho e que assim ficam sem direitos básicos: protecção no desemprego, enquadramento legal dos tempos de trabalho ou períodos de descanso, férias pagas, “subsídio de férias” e “subsídio de Natal”, estando ainda quase sempre impossibilitadas de usufruir dos seus direitos em situação de doença ou parentalidade. Sujeitos à ilegalidade dos falsos recibos verdes, quase sempre com baixos salários, contribuem para a Segurança Social, mas quase sem contrapartidas. Os patrões, que obrigam todas estas pessoas a trabalhar sem o contrato de trabalho a que têm direito, exploram e lavam as mãos. É assim que muitos destes trabalhadores se vêem impossibilitados de cumprir as suas prestações para a Segurança Social. Com baixos salários, sem direitos e deixados sozinhos nesta responsabilidade, milhares de pessoas estão a acumular uma dívida injusta, enquanto os patrões infractores continuam alegremente uma das maiores fraudes sociais do país. Passado o luto, este ano queremos recorda-lo, fazendo uma homenagem em sua honra... como Pai, Amigo, Marionetista, Colega de profissão... mas principalmente como pessoa, falando do seu percurso de vida até chegar ao Mundo das Marionetas. Destak/Lusa | destak@destak.pt "Não existe uma política cultural já feita, é preciso ser melhorada, adequada, é um trabalho de diálogo", defendeu Villepin em entrevista à agência Lusa, à margem do Estoril Film Festival onde deu uma aula sobre o papel de Malraux, o primeiro responsável por um ministério da cultura, de 1959 a 1969, nos governos de Charles De Gaulle. Visitante assíduo de Portugal, Dominique de Villepin conhece profundamente a história e a cultura do nosso país. Foi em Cascais, onde agora regressou para o festival, que passou a lua-de-mel. Ao falar da identidade portuguesa, vai buscar facilmente Fernando Pessoa. Aprovámos em França a lei Hadopi que tenta preencher um vazio jurídico e que permite afirmar que qualquer obra de criação merece remuneração, mas estamos conscientes dos limites de uma lei como esta, e temos de conseguir avançar para um sistema mais estimulante no plano cultural." Sobre o papel que o Estado pode ter neste plano, Villpein defende que "o mercado não é suficiente, não se pode ter apenas Hollywood e Bollywood no cinema". "Como explicar o milagre do cinema da Palestina, de Israel, do Irão, até de filmes independentes americanos, com orçamentos pequeninos?" "O Estado está lá para dar uma oportunidade, para sair da lógica do mercado, porque o grande risco da mundialização é que a cultura seja um bem como qualquer outro, uma simples mercadoria. Isso é uma ameaça à cultura. Precisamos de permitir a expressão aos criadores que têm algo a dizer, de qualquer que seja o seu horizonte. É aí que os mecanismos apropriados de encorajamento à criação podem mudar tudo." Villepin sublinhou que André Malraux "foi o primeiro a mostrar até que ponto é importante que cada um tenha acesso à cultura e a todas as obras da cultura do passado e também do presente. Essa afirmação é revolucionária. A cultura não está fechada em caixas, em livros, em museus, nas bibliotecas nem nos teatros." A educação é um "bem comum" mas a cultura, para Villepin, é mais do que isso: "uma ligação entre os homens, um meio de independência e de pertença, aquilo a que Malraux chamava um anti-destino". "Não são iguais os destinos de um rapaz que nasce nuns subúrbios franceses, ou de outro que nasce na burguesia ou do filho de um operário. Mas a cultura pode destruir esse fatalismo, permitir que cada um se reaproprie da sua vida, do seu destino. Um anti-destino é um destino diferente daquele que estava escrito. E essa é a força revolucionária da cultura." "O ensino dá-nos meios para compreendermos o mundo e para nele nos situarmos, mas a cultura vai mais longe. Permite agir sobre nós mesmos não apenas no conhecimento que temos de nós mas também na capacidade de mudar. A cultura é um elemento de interacção entre eu e eu próprio e entre eu e os outros. É o melhor instrumento de transformação, de metamorfose. Deste ponto de vista, a cultura é um instrumento extremamente poderoso que temos sobre nós e os outros, é um elemento de liberdade".

“O Sol nasceu. Como está lindo o céu. Cá vou eu, vem tu daí também. Aprender como se vai até à Rua Sésamo”. Certamente que conhece esta letra. E quem não se lembra ainda do Egas e Becas, os amigos inseparáveis que entretinham muitas crianças? Para não falar do monstro das Bolachas, que tal como o nome indica não pensava senão em bolachas, e do Poupas, o famoso pássaro amarelo, que por cá ganhou a cor laranja, que fazia as delícias dos espectadores mais novos. A Rua Sésamo, baseada num programa infantil da televisão americana “Sesame Street”, começou a ser emitida em Portugal apenas em 1989, tendo estreado nos Estados Unidos a 10 de Novembro de 1969. Com várias personagens que nos ficam na memória, a Rua Sésamo era um programa educacional que ensinava os mais pequenos de forma divertida, um desses exemplos é a canção do alfabeto em que duas personagens se juntam para animadamente cantar as letras do alfabeto. Para além das alusões aos números, às cores, às formas e até o apelo à tolerância étnica. Em Portugal, a Rua Sésamo já não é emitida há vários anos na televisão. Mas, nos Estados Unidos este dia é celebrado com o início de uma nova temporada, contando até com a presença da primeira-dama, Michelle Obama. Afinal o dia de hoje é considerado o dia da Rua Sésamo. Os vários episódios da Rua Sésamo correram o mundo, tendo chegado a mais de 120 países. Os personagens tiveram uma grande projecção fora do programa, sendo criados brinquedos, entre outros produtos relacionados com os bonecos animados. A Rua Sésamo surgiu a partir de Joan Ganz Cooney e Lloyd Morrisett e para os mais saudosistas, actualmente, este programa conta com um site na internet, onde se podem encontrar vídeos, jogos e uma zona dedicada às personagens desta série infantil. New adaptation of Shaun Tan’s The Arrival coming to the Sydney Festival

Red Leap Theatre from New Zealand will be bringing a new theatre adaptation of Shaun Tan’s book The Arrival to the Sydney Festival in January. I love the look of what I can see in this video of highlights, in particular the aesthetic feel and muted colours, the puppets and the imagery.

I saw the adaptation of The Arrival by Spare Parts Pupppet Theatre at the Unima 2008 Puppetry Festival in Fremantle. It has gone on to win a number of awards, and recently had a season at the World Puppetry Festival in Charleville Mezieres, France. I felt the strength of that production was in the projected animations and digital imagery, and that the story line and emotional content had been simplified for a very young audience. I hope Red Leap’s production will be able to tap further into the richness and drama that the book holds.

Marionetas chegam a Leiria em Novembro 30 de Outubro 2009 Entre 31 de Outubro e 29 de Novembro, Leiria será palco, pelo sexto ano consecutivo, da iniciativa “Marionetas em Novembro”, um conjunto de espectáculos e actividades, sobre marionetas e formas animadas, dedicados ao público infantil e Juvenil. Robertos, bonecros, bonifrates, fantoches, títeres ou marionetas são algumas das designações que, ao longo dos tempos, têm sido atribuídas aos bonecos articulados que, movidos por mãos hábeis com recurso a cordelinhos, engonços, varetas ou luvas, entre outros, fazem as delícias de um público fiel e crescente. Até finais de Outubro podem ser apreciadas no CCC (Centro Cultural das Caldas da Rainha) oito marionetas que participaram no espectáculo D. Perlimplim com Beliza en seu jardin de Garcia Lorca. A encenação é de José Carlos Barros, fundador da Associação Cultural Marionetas de Lisboa, que tem um currículo apreciável nesta área artística. Cenógrafo, aderecista e figurinista, foi director do Teatro Trindade entre 1989 e 1993. Durante alguns anos coordenou o curso de Design de Cena na Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema. Stories from the Ground

This lovely shadow puppetry in Lior’s I’ll forget You is the work of Stephen Mushin, Anna Parry and Sarita Ryan from Stories from the Ground Puppet Collective, a micro-theatre shadow puppet troupe, and Starkraving Productions. Both are based in Melbourne. This year Stephen and the Anna have been touring with Lior’s Shadows and Light Tour, performing live. Spiltpin Limbs is an offshoot of Stories from the Ground, now ‘a major branch in its own right’. I’m not sure exactly how the two relate, except that they look closely allied. This behind-the-scenes video is really cool, too.

Franky and Mr. Scott is a new Kids Video Series. Their newest episode “Nite Nite w/Franky” has Franky being read a Bible story each night by Mr. Scott. One of the creators, Frank Rodriguez has been performing for church audiences for the past 9 years in Castle Rock Colorado for Vacation Bible School and decided to venture out and make short videos telling bible stories, biblical and non biblical application stories, and just put out good plain wholesome family entertainment. Great work, hope to see more.

Legacy and other things

I thoroughly enjoyed Ronnie Burkett’s show Billy Twinkle up in Sydney, as well as an unexpected Q & A session afterwards. These are some take-away musings:

Billy Twinkle is partly about legacy – the cycle of the master passing on his skills. So its funny to me that most of my thoughts about the evening have been about what seem at first to be things that go contrary to legacy. Burkett publishes his scripts but doesn’t allow his shows to be recorded, as he recordings never do justice to performance, and theatre is about the live fleeting experience. He also has a somewhat dispassionate view of his puppets, in the sense that he regards them only as fine instruments with which he tells his stories. They are beautifully made and over the years have been perfected technically, but in the long run the idea of putting the collection on a pyre has some attraction for him. Sometimes, as a maker, I hope I am making more than that, a piece of art or a spark of character that stands by itself. In truth though, I think in both cases the real art is the process, the understanding and experience that takes place while making theatre, or while making instruments for the theatre. It’s a challenging outlook, (especially when society seems to be recording more and more, and it would be a shame not to have any record of Ronnie performing), but it makes sense: art is an ephemeral process and life is finite.

Strangely, this seems to have similarities to my musings recently about Should the real time web be able to forget?

I was really interested to hear Burkett say how much exciting puppetry is happening in Australia, especially in Melbourne. That is my impression too, so it was cool to hear it expressed by a visiting master puppeteer.

A puppeteer with marionettes that operate their own teeny tiny marionettes is pretty cool and meta!

Lastly, it’s tricky for a puppeteer to have a solo eye-to-eye conversation with a glove puppet that doesn’t have a moving mouth. I’ve seen Neville Tranter demonstrate how we always instinctively follow the largest movement, and in this case the audience instinctively follows the puppeteer’s mouth when he is talking for the puppet. So there is some confusion as to who is talking, especially if the puppeteer is talking passionately and the repartee between the two characters is quick. It is possible confusion was intended; I’m not sure.

Update: By chance this morning I rediscovered the 4th episode of The Puppeteers (Mabel and Maude), which, if I am reading it right, does a great job of taking the piss out of all this puppeteering and legacy talk.

I’m sad to report the death of master puppeteer Pady Blackwood, the official puppeteer for TV’s Howdy Doody and one of the driving forces behind Pinocchio’s Marionette Theatre. On Tuesday October 14, 2009 Pady was driving to a Target Store in Casselberry, Fl. When he suffered a massive heart attack. He was 70.

Pady had worked as a puppeteer for many companies, but he was best remembered for his work on “The New Howdy Doody Show” in 1976.

Jim Henson called Mr. Blackwood “one of the most gifted and innovative artists in the field of puppetry.”

StiqPuppet Productions is a company that Daryl H started three years ago. Daryl is a fellow Canadian living in British Columbia. Stiqpuppets Live is a live show Daryl hosts each week that demonstrates his amazing puppet building techniques. Daryl, on occasion, has other puppeteer professionals co-host and teach a large variety of topics in the field. The weekly show is shown on BlogTv and has a interactive chat room so viewers can ask Daryl questions as he builds puppets. Tonight’s Incubator has been cancelled. Please join us on Tuesday, October 27th for the next Incubator Session. About the Puppet Showplace Incubators:

Incubator (in ku ba´ ter) n : A place or situation that permits or encourages the formation and development, as of new ideas.

Every other Tuesday from 7 - 9 pm (go to schedule) PST hosts a "drop-in" session where emerging artists, veteran puppeteers, teachers, and puppet enthusiasts gather to discuss and develop creative ideas in a casual, informal environment.

Here artists of all media and genres, experienced or not, can experiment with new puppetry ideas, materials and styles. It's a place where knowledge is shared, constructive critique is the norm, and collaborations are born.

No matter where your interests lie, from traditional theatre to the avant garde, you're welcome at these sessions.

Similar workshops have developed and flourished in places like Atlanta and New York, adding breadth and richness to the puppetry of those cities, and now the same thing is happening here!

Over the last month I have been the busiest I have ever been in my entire life. Over the past two weeks I closed down camp, got married, and went to Mexico on a honeymoon. Yesterday I’ve started net surfing again and found some really amazing stuff that I will post in the next couple of days. Stay Tuned!

Royal de Luxe’s giants celebrate reunion in Berlin

Celebrations are taking place in Berlin this weekend for the 20th anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall and the re-unification of Germany. At the centre of the celebrations is a 4-day performance by Royal de Luxe’s giant street theatre puppets, featuring their little giantess, and her giant uncle, the deep-sea diver.

Earlier this year in June the diver debuted in Nantes in La géante du Titanic et le scaphandrier, but in Berlin the back story, already one of separation and reunion, has been redrawn as an allegory for the divisions of Germany:

Berlin was once a swamp inhabited by giants. One day, land and sea monsters tore the city in two and the Big Giant and Little Giantess were separated. The Little Giantess fell into a long sleep. When she awakes, she finds a large old mailbag containing letters between East and West Berlin, and sets out to deliver them. After each searching the streets of the city, the two giants are reunited and symbolically return tens of thousands of letters once intercepted by former East Germany’s Stasi secret police to people watching their procession through the city.

Cleaning Up and Apologising

Wow, it's been awhile since I've blogged.

I had previously posted a couple of messages on here about some of the personal upheaval that's kept me away from the puppetry intrawebs for so long. I'm somewhat reluctant to discuss my personal life and circumstances in a public forum like this - if anything recent events have taught me to never, ever do that again - but suffice to say I had a number of deaths and serious illnesses among my family and friends including the passing of my father and the combination of natural grief and dealing with all the mundane things you have to deal with when people die or are ill kept me away and distracted.

I owe an especially big apology to everyone who enrolled in the Puppet Building 101 course (see previous post) I was running at the beginning of the summer. Circumstances forced me to postpone the course after it started by a few weeks, then until the Fall and finally to cancel it outright because changes in my personal and professional responsibilities just don't allow me the time to do it. Refunds to everyone who enrolled were held up because of some PayPal-related snafus, but I'm relieved to say that the last of them were issued this week.

Now it's come to my attention recently that there was some particularly nasty chat about this on at least one other puppetry website. I haven't really been online much for several months and the relevant threads seem to have now been deleted by moderators, but this flame war seemed to escalate last week to the point where certain individuals (well, ok, mainly one individual) who had been enrolled in the course wase harassing and beginning to cyberstalk other members of the online puppetry community.

I certainly can understand people being upset and frustrated about Puppet Building 101, but I'm baffled as to why someone seems to be taking that out on folks who have nothing to do with the situation. I am not going to name names, but this person knows who they are and would like to appeal to them to come to their senses and stop this. You are only going to end up hurting yourself and not the person you're mad at (me).

I do want to take this opportunity to publicly and sincerely apologise to anyone who was enrolled for the cancellation as well as any inconvenience and frustration the long, drawn-out situation caused. Although the circumstances were largely out of my control, I wish I had been able to deal with the situation in a more prompt manner.

I've spent a long time building up a lot of goodwill with this little ol' blog here and it's unfortunate that it has become tainted by the fallout from my Summer from Hell. So to the two dozen or so people who were affected, please accept my unconditional apology. I hope I can find a way to make it up to you in the future.

If you are unfamiliar with this film or the book by Roald Dahl, please watch the trailer above. The film is stop-motion animation, in the style of Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas and The Corpse Bride (this film's director, Henry Selnick, directed Coraline and Nightmare).

Based on the Roald Dahl book of the same name, James and the Giant Peach is the story of an orphan who, on a journey to New York City, befriends kind, human-like bugs who live inside a giant peach.

Featuring the voices of Richard Dreyfuss, Susan Sarandon, and David Thewlis, among others. This film is rated PG.

FREE Family Movie Nite 8/8 - Follow That Bird!

Before The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland, there was Follow That Bird, Big Bird's road-trip adventure movie.

Here's a quick synopsis: Big Bird wants to get to know other birds. But when he goes to live with a crazy bird family–the Dodos of Ocean View, Illinois–he decides he would be happier back with his friends on Sesame Street. He has to count on the help of old and new friends to help him to make it back home.

Like other Muppet movies, a handful of celebrities make cameo appearances peppered throughout the film. In the clip above, country singer Waylon Jennings sings with Big Bird. Other stars making appearances include Chevy Chase, John Candy, Dave Thomas, Joe Flaherty and Sandra Bernhard. (89 min, G)

Deborah Costine, Puppeteer! in the News

Deborah Costine, friend of the Puppet Showplace Theatre, has been in the news a lot this year. Back in October 2008, she and Len Gerwick celebrated the 5,000th performance of Gerwick Puppets with a special show at the Puppet Showplace Theatre.

As if that wasn't great enough, at the National Puppetry Festival earlier this month in Atlanta, Deborah and her production of "A Woodland Cinderella" were honored with an UNIMA Citation of Excellence!

UNIMA (Union Internationale de la Marionette) is an international puppetry organization that has honored exceptional puppeteers and their productions yearly since 1975. The Citation of Excellence is UNIMA's highest honor, and one of the highest honors in the field of puppetry.

Many of the film's puppets are fantastical creatures like the goblins, gargoyles and others beyond description in this clip (not to mention big-haired David Bowie in tights). And though the puppets are, for the most part, goofy–and the good guys win in the end–not all of them are goofy and there are a lot of dark scenes.

Labyrinth is the story of Sarah (Jennifer Connelly), her baby brother, and the Goblin King (Bowie). Sarah has to rescue her baby brother from the mean Goblin King before time runs out, but first has to navigate the Goblin King's confusing and confounding labyrinth! This film is one of Jim Henson's most fantastical movie creations.

The film is rated PG. We do not recommend this film for ages below 7.

Slowing Down For the Summer

Jay ThePal (and Kay ThePal) seem to be popping up all over social media lately.

It took me a little while to figure out what was up with Jay ThePal, a puppet character that seemed to start popping up all over every social media website that you can think of lately. I think I first saw him (along with Kay ThePal) when they gave me a shout-out on 12seconds.tv, which is sort of Twitter for video.

Jay ThePal is one of those FAO Schwartz "Whatnot" Muppet puppets and seems to be a sort of puppetry experiment that's happening all over the web (Twitter, YouTube, 12seconds, etc.). It's a little difficult to get a handle on the whole project or where it's going, but it's very interesting to watch how people are using puppetry to explore social media. Definitely something to keep an eye on.

Going Back To The Future Of Advertising

Paul recently did a great post on his blog about Jim Henson's early commercial spots and how that could be a successful advertising model today. I think he's absolutely right; his post reminds me of one I wrote a couple years ago called Using Puppets To Pay The Bills.

The 30 second pre-roll ad is almost universally hated. The web is a new medium that we're still in early stages of exploring. The people who really "break through" and define it will be the ones who figure out new ways of telling stories and develop new (old?) ways of thinking about advertising and sponsorship.

Dan Stevers creates Christian-themed motion graphics.

Over the past month or I've been watching and enjoying Dan Stevers' Christian-themed motion graphics videos on Vimeo. Two of my favourites are The Light of the World and Life With God. Some of Dan's videos are artistic interpretations of Christian scripture, while others simply illustrate basic Christian principles.

"OK" nicely combines puppetry and pop-up books.

I know at least a couple puppeteers who love to make pop-up books. This music video from an unfortunately named band seems to combine those two interests very nicely.

Nike's MVPuppets campaign has been a huge hit with basketball fans.

Nike's MVPuppets campaign (see previous posts here and here) keeps rolling right along. I think the bigger a fan of the NBA you are, the more you can appreciate these. The storyline in the ads has been following along with the NBA playoffs; in one of the newest ones LeBron - who's never won an NBA championship - is stuck at home with Lil' Dez while Kobe Bryant plays in the finals.

The ads have gotten a lot of attention and really prove that clever, well-done puppetry appeals to just about everybody. Click "Read More" to see some of the latest spots:

Transylvania TV Happenings

Transylvania TV is preparing it's second season.

Production on Transylvania TV (see previous post) seems to be humming along nicely. The show is holding auditions for new puppeteers and also running a puppet design competition called the "Lose Your Intellectual Property Contest" (hey, at least they're honest about it!).

Season two of Transylvania TV debuts online July 4th.

Is 30 Rock A Muppet Show Rip-Off?

Is NBC's 30 Rock based on The Muppet Show?

Brian Lynch - screenwriter of the unproduced and literally-titled The Next Muppet Movie - has written a hilarious post on his blog alleging that the NBC comedy 30 Rock is a rip off of The Muppet Show. Although he's writing with his tongue firmly in his cheek, the similarities are actually kind of striking. I mean, I knew there were some connections between the Muppets and 30 Rock, but after reading this I'll never be able to look at Tracey Morgan with a straight face again.

Virgin One's New Puppet Mascot

Red is the new puppet mascot of Virgin One.

British broadcaster Virgin One has a brand new mascot and he's a puppet. His name is Red and he's performed by Brian Herring and was built by Paul Jomain, who also built the PG Tips monkey.

Red was created as part of complete rebranding of Virgin One that begins on air tonight at 9 p.m. in the UK. There's a promo available on YouTube and eagle-eyed PuppetVision readers will spot several puppets by the Gluvets (see previous post) and Darryl Worbey Studios in the video. The cast puppeteers who worked on this included Mak Wilson, Brian Herring, Phil Fletcher and Simon Buckley.

Linear vs. Passive Income

You may not know this about me, but I went to business school.

Actually, I went to a special one-year program here in Toronto that incubates small businesses and trains them in entrepreneurship. While I was there, we frequently had business owners come in to do guest lectures. One of the lecturers was the owner of a rapidly expanding bakery who told us a story that I've thought about a lot lately.

The story was about the first few years of his business and how he barely made a living running a small shop selling his baked goods. One day, finally fed up with not having any money and with a baby on the way, he decided something had to change. He started trying new things, altered his business model and starting selling his products wholesale to supermarkets and other stores. This worked really well because the supermarkets and stores could sell a lot more of his products to the public than he ever could. As an additional bonus, because the stores and supermarkets now took care of most of the sales work he was able to focus on his real passion, making food.

Not long after he made the change he was out with his wife one night and they stopped at a supermarket to pick something up. He saw people buying his products and realized that he was making money right then and there even though he was out on a date with his wife!

In business there are two types of income - linear income and passive income. Most people make a linear income. If you have a job and work X number of hours to get paid X number of dollars or if you make something (like a puppet) and then sell it, you make a linear income. There's nothing wrong with a linear income per se, but the difficulty with it is that in order to make more money you usually have to do more work. At a certain point you just can't work any more hours so there's a pretty firm ceiling on how much money you can earn from a linear income source.

By comparison, a passive income is money that you make with little to no effort. Advertising is a good example of a passive income source; it takes about the same amount of work to write a blog read by one million visitors as it does to write one read by ten people, but you can make a lot more money advertising to one million readers than ten. Other good examples of passive income would be selling merchandise through Cafepress or selling a puppet pattern that people can download from your online store. A passive income scales much better than a linear one does, so in theory you can make more and more money without having to do more and more work.

Selling baked goods wholesale probably isn't a textbook example of a passive income source, but the underlying lesson of the bakery story - maximizing profit while minimizing effort - is what passive income is all about. It's also something that I think all artists need to understand. After all, if you look at puppetry or just entertainment in general, the most successful companies all rely on passive income streams like licensing and advertising to make most of their profits.

I know his might seem really simple and an obvious thing to point out, but if it's common sense then it's not so common. Think about how many people you know who are struggling and make a linear income? Are you? Earning any kind of income - passive or linear - takes hard work, but the more I think about it, the more having a passive income seems like a better, smarter way to work.

Food Party Fun

Thu Tran's Food Party is like no cooking show you've ever seen before.

Food Party is a new show on IFC that describes itself as a "mind-bending, non-reality cooking show" and is built around artist/food enthusiast Thu Tran and a cast of puppets who cook up all kinds of bizarre recipes together. Food Party grew out of an art installation and online series Thu created in her hometown of Cleveland and kind of defies explanation. It's a little bit like what Martha Stewart might look like if it was filmed it on the set of Pee Wee's Playhouse.

In an interview with Thu about the genesis of Food Party, Gothamist called Food Party "quite possibly the only cooking program you should be watching" and I'm inclined to agree. It's independent, wacky, weird and exactly the kind of thing we need more of on TV.

Food Party debuts on IFC next Tuesday at 11:15 ET/PT. A bunch of Food Party videos are available on the IFC website, including a look behind the scenes.

Puppet Building 101: Nine Week Online Puppet Building Workshop

I'm really happy to announce today that I'm going to be offering a nine week, interactive online puppet building course, Puppet Building 101.

This is an intensive nine week course I'll be offering via PuppetBuilding.com that is designed to take you step-by-step through the process of how you to build exactly the kinds of puppets you want to make. The course has a couple of components, including:

Weekly video tutorials and handouts that take you step-by-step through the puppet building process.
A personalized program that will be geared to the specific needs and interests of the participants.
A weekly live video session with an interactive format for asking questions that will feature extra tutorials and demonstrations.
A private “class discussion” message board where you can share, discuss, critique and trade notes with other participants.

Don't let the "101" fool you. The goal of the course isn't just to teach you how to build a puppet and follow a bunch of instructions step-by-step, it's designed to teach you how to think about building puppets and how you can design, pattern and build your own original characters from scratch. Over the course of nine weeks, everyone who participates will build three different puppets including a custom character they've designed from scratch.

The cost of the course is $89.95 US. That's less than the cost of two really good puppet building patterns or DVDs and this has the added bonus of being interactive and with one-on-one help and feedback. I think that's a great bargain, especially considering that really good offline workshops can often cost a couple hundred dollars.

Enrollment for the course is now available and it would be great to have some PuppetVision readers involved! The deadline to sign-up is June 6th, but because this is the first time I'm offering it I'm going to be limiting enrollment so the cut off may come before then if the course fills up quickly.

Gareth Oliver's Got Talent

Gareth Oliver is a talented British Ventriloquist who appeared on the latest season of Britain's Got Talent.

With all the worldwide media attention heaped on Susan Boyle during the latest season of Britain's Got Talent, a really talented Ventriloquist on the show has somewhat overlooked - Gareth Oliver. He debuted on the show with a really unique act - throwing his voice while performing martial arts - and wowed the audience and judges with a spoof of badly dubbed Kung Fu movies. In the second round he switched gears and performed an opera-singing puppet named Pav (built by previous Britain's Got Talent contestants the Gluvets). Gareth almost made it through to the finals and actually received enough public votes to get into the top three, but was cut when the judges had to break a tie between him and singer Shaun Smith.

Even though Gareth may not have won the competition, appearing on Britain's Got Talent is already boosting his career. The website of E3 Group (the firm that represents Gareth in the UK) have reported record traffic on their site since his appearances and say that hundreds of people have been inquiring about his availability. He'll also be making extensive promotional appearances for ITV in the UK, so it looks like it will be a happy ending for him after all.

Kiss The Girl

College Humour channels The Muppet Show while spoofing a classic scene from The Little Mermaid.

College Humour sends up The Little Mermaid in Kiss The Girl, a hilarious musical parody that's mildly NSFW and entirely inappropriate children. The puppets in the video were designed and built by James Wojtal, who also performed in the video along with Frankie Cordero (see previous post) and Rei Radilla.

Lou Romano's Art of UP

Lou Romano shares some of his beautiful conceptual art from Pixar's Up on his blog (image c Disney/Pixar).

Up was the number one movie at the box office this weekend, which is pretty unsurprising since many critics are calling it Pixar's best movie yet and because, well, it's a Pixar movie. I haven't seen it yet, but I'm looking forward to checking it out this week because everyone seems to be raving about it. If you want to see some absolutely beautiful conceptual art from the film, head over to the blog of Lou Romano who has put together a huge post featuring his design and production work from Up.

Pixar's next film is Toy Story 3, which is slated for release next year. A teaser trailer has just been released and it's predictably perfect (I imagine it's probably playing in theatres in front of Up).

Puppet Building Live on the Web

I was going to write something today about the recent surge in puppet building live online, but Dan beat me to it.

A lot of puppet builders are using services like ustream.tv, Justin.tv and BlogTV to broadcast their puppet building live to the world. Here's a run down of the shows that are available:

You + Me + Puppets = Yay!
This is Stacey's semi-regular show on BlogTV and the oldest of the lot I think. Stacey is always fun to hang out with online and she makes finger puppet making much more entertaining than you could ever possibly imagine. Easily wins the award for most entertaining.

Stiq Puppets Live
Of all the shows emerging, this is probably the most elaborate. Hosted by Daryl of Stiq Productions, each week he prepares a tutorial and offers a lot of helpful puppet building tips. He also frequently has a lot of other talented puppet builders to guest host the show with him.

Puppets and Stuff Live
I have caught any installments of this yet, but Shawn Sorrell of Puppets and Stuff also does some puppet building live online. I believe he's been a guest on Stiq Puppets' show and offered some marionette making tutorials.

Hoggworks Live
Brian Hogg has also been exploring live streaming and was online Friday night building puppets and chatting with visitors. He's also been doing live installments of Ask Palpatine.

Live streaming opens up all kinds of interesting possibilities in puppetry. It's an exciting time to be doing this kind of stuff on the web!

Deliberate Practice and Why Talent is Overrated

Over the past few months I've been getting back in to a lot a of serious puppetry rehearsal and thinking about the concept of deliberate practice quite a bit. While the famous adage says it's important to “practice, practice, practice”, that's not how deliberate practice works. Hit the link for a really good article on the subject, but the basic idea is that how you practice is much more important that how much you practice.

Over the years I've noticed that the best puppeteers are intensely self-critical and have a remarkable ability to identify their weaknesses as performers. They often analyze seemingly trivial details - the way their fingers grasp a puppet, the way their muscles flex, the way they grasp an object in a scene - and continually experiment with ways to improve their performances.

Just some food for thought this weekend.

Orson Welles was well-known as a Muppet fan. He famously appears in a cameo at the end of The Muppet Movie and was once quoted saying "Sesame Street is the greatest thing that ever happened to television." I had no idea though that Jim Henson and Frank Oz were Orson Welles' quests on a TV pilot he shot in 1979. Of course, after some quick Googling I discovered that the good folks over at Muppet Wiki already knew that (they know everything about Muppets).

New Film From Frankie Cordero

The first in a new series of four films from puppeteer/director Frankie Cordero has just been released.

Frankie Cordero (see previous post) is directing and series of four web shorts for a company called 14 Hands. They incorporate a variety of puppetry styles and the first just became available to watch online here. I don't know what this is called, but I like it and I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of Frankie's new films.

Memorial Day Inspiration: Sita Sings The Blues

Happy Memorial Day to all my American friends! (Here in Canada, it's just another Monday...)

Whether you have the day off today or not, find sometime soon to watch Sita Sings the Blues. It's a feature length animated 2D film that was written, directed, produced and animated entirely by Nina Paley on a single computer in her apartment(!). As if that wasn't cool enough, she's decided to release the film under Creative Commons for free and is trying to make money on the film through voluntary payments, ancillary products, sponsorships, public screenings, and limited DVD sales. According to some reports, her somewhat unorthodox distribution strategy has already made her money than a conventional film distribution contract would have.

"Babui" is a tabletop puppet show about love, caring and cooperation. It features an elephant, an ostrich, a tiger, and Babui, which is a... um... well, it's red and it's cute and it hatches from an egg. The show also features wildly imaginative puppets, fantastic props and a wonderfully funky musical score.

New PST Animation: Take the T to PST!

Back in January of this year, Professor Jason Wiener at the New England Institute of Art approached PST about the theatre's participation as a client for his advanced animation class. The class assignment was to create a 30-second animation highlighting whatever the client wanted. For PST, that meant showcasing how easy it is to get here using the Green Line 'D' train (since we're right across the street from the Brookline Village station!).

Now, not even six months later, the class has produced a wonderful animation. We're still in the process of adding it to the Puppet Showplace Theatre website, but until we find a suitable spot, please enjoy it here!

And remember–we're right across the street from the Brookline Village T station on the Green Line 'D' train. So next time you attend a performance, consider taking the T: You won't have to worry about traffic or finding a place to park!

The Quay Brothers named Coolidge Corner Theatre's 2009 Coolidge Award Recipients

The Coolidge Corner Theatre has chosen animation luminaries the Quay Brothers as the recipients of the 2009 Coolidge Award. The extraordinary Quays are two of the world’s most original filmmakers. Identical twins who were born in Pennsylvania in 1947, the Quay Brothers studied illustration in Philadelphia before going on to the Royal College of Art in London, where they started to make animated shorts in the 1970s. They have lived inLondon ever since, making their unique and innovative films under the aegis of Koninck Studios.

Influenced by European writers, composers, and animators – particularly Bruno Schulz, Robert Walser, Kafka, Laidislaw Starewicz, Jan Svankmajer, Janacek, and Stravinsky -- the Quays display a passion for detail, a breathtaking command of color and texture, and an uncanny use of focus and camera movement. Best known for their classic film Street of Crocodiles, which filmmaker Terry Gilliam recently selected as one of the ten one of the ten best animated films of all time, they are masters of miniaturization and puppetry, and on their tiny sets have created an unforgettable world, suggestive of a landscape of long-repressed childhood dreams.

The Quays’ exquisite body of work includes many stop-action animation shorts, live action feature films (Institute Benjamenta, The Piano Tuner of Earthquakes), television commercials, music videos, set designs for theater and opera, and two dance films, Duet and The Sandman. In 2002, they contributed an animated dream sequence for Julie Taymor’s film Frida. They are currently in production on THE MASK, a film based on the short story by Stanislaw Lem.

The Puppet Showplace Theatre welcomes Crabgrass Puppet Theatre for two days (Saturday, March 21 and Sunday, March 22) of performances of their show The Last Dragon on Earth.

Here's more about the show: For as long as anyone can remember, princes have fought dragons and rescued princesses. It's just the way things have always been done. But what happens when the princess doesn't need rescuing and the dragon is the very last one on Earth?

This modern fairy tale is a wonderful introduction to the concept of endangered species and is brought to life with Crabgrass Puppet Theatre's blend of beautiful puppets, fabulous scenery–full of caves and castles–and hysterically funny action.

PuppetSLAM March 14th 8pm

Our next PuppetSLAM is Saturday March 14th at 8:00 pm. This SLAM is a combination of live puppetry performances and video productions. Featured artists for the evening include The Royal Frog Ballet and PBC Productions.

The Royal Frog Ballet presents "THE YEAR OF WANTING", A Very Small Shadow Show About The Depths Of Hell. This productions is a hand-cranked, candle-illuminated shadow show, based on the Greek myth of Persephone, and including elements from other winter myths and folktales. The Royal Frog Ballet is a collaboration of artists and alumni from Hampshire College, including co-directors Sarah Blackwell, Matt Lorenz and performer Sophie Wood.

PBC Productions shares their video production "Zombie Apocalypse". PBC Productions is a internet based video production company. Their work includes humorous shorts, fun video game reviews, and compelling documentaries. Happy Presidents' Day

What better way to celebrate President's Day than with finger puppets?

We found this great kids' activity at kaboose.com.

What you'll need:

-Blue and black construction paper
-Cellophane tape
-Lincoln-head penny
-Washington-head quarter
-Scissors

How to make it:

Cut two three-inch squares, one from each of the construction sheet colors.
Roll each square into a tube that will slip over your finger. Secure the roll with tape.
To make the Lincoln puppet, tape the penny to the black paper tube at roughly an inch below the top.
Cut a thin rectangle from the black paper for the hat brim. Tape the brim along the top of the head.
To make the Washington puppet, tape the quarter to the top of the blue paper tube.
Cut a one and a half inch square from the blue paper for the hat.
fold the square in half, corner to corner, making a triangle.
Cut a slit out of the center fold of the square to make an opening. Once again fold the square in half, this time folding the opposite corner to corner, making a triangle.
Slip the hat over the top of the tube finger puppet.
Tape both halves of the triangle together.

Tip:

Dress them up by adding details to the puppets using collage materials. You might want to add a gold sequin medallion to Washington's hat, for example, and some white doily paper to the chin for a lace collar. For Lincoln, try adding a shirt collar made from white paper, and some buttons.

Back by popular demand, the award-winning Bread and Puppet Theater, featuring Artistic Director Peter Schumann and his troupe of 8 Vermont puppeteers, returns for a third year to the Cyclorama bringing their signature powerful imagery, masked characters, and giant papier-mâché puppets. The Bread and Puppet touring company, for this residency at the Cyclorama, includes Schumann, along with Danny McNamara, Maura Gahan, Greg Corbino, Diana Sette, Maryann Colella, Federica Collina, Cavan Meese, and Susie Perkins.

The Bread and Puppet Theater is an internationally recognized company that champions a visually rich, street-theater brand of performance art that is filled with music, dance and slapstick. Their shows are political and spectacular, with huge puppets made of papier-maché and cardboard, a brass band for accompaniment, and anti-elitist singing and dance. Most are morality plays — about how people act toward each other — whose prototype is "Everyman." There are puppets of all kinds and sizes, masks, sculptural costumes, paintings, buildings and landscapes that seemingly breathe with Schumann's distinctive visual style of dance, expressionism, dark humor and low-culture simplicity.

Ambos têm de replantar o jardim. O Mundo planta a lua, as estrelas e o sol, pois todos os dias estes têm de nascer e a menina Hera planta as flores com a ajuda do caracol, do pássaro e da borboleta que ajudam os mais pequenos a perceber o quanto é importante o Sol, a Chuva e o Vento. As marionetas foram construídas em esponja bem como os adereços e figurinos. As marionetas têm manipulação da boca sendo que o seu corpo é manipulado directamente.<br /><br /><br /><strong>“Histórias da Velha Aldeia”<br /></strong>“Histórias da Velha Aldeia” remete para a tradição oral dos contos populares. Um velho moleiro habita para lá da floresta e em troca da alma dos jovens valentes oferece todas as riquezas pedidas.<br />Este espectáculo é povoado por três cenografias distintas, o espaço da aldeia, da floresta e do moinho de Califar. As marionetas foram construídas em diversos materiais como a madeira, a pasta de cerâmica, a pasta de madeira, esferovites e outros. As marionetas são manipuladas através de uma vara que se situa atrás da mesma, a restante manipulação é feita directamente. Esta marioneta pode ser manipulada por uma, duas ou três pessoas.<br /><br /><strong>”O Gato preto e a Gaivota cor-de-prata”</strong><br />O espectáculo o “Gato Preto e a Gaivota Cor de Prata” apresenta cenografias distintas que representam os espaços onde habitam os gatos, quer seja a casa do Zorba, personagem central desta peça, quer seja o cais onde moram o pelicanos ou as traseiras do restaurante onde mora o Coronelo.<br />Em breves palavras, esta história foi imaginada por uma criança que enquanto chovia teve de ficar dentro de casa com os seu brinquedos. E ela imaginou que...Um dia uma gaivota fora envenenada por um mar de petróleo. Ela pôs um último ovo no beiral de uma janela onde um gato a tentava salvar. Então, ela fez com que ele lhe prometesse que a ensinaria a voar. Mas os gatos não sabem voar e daí decorre a história, os encontros e desencontros até à descoberta do grande voo. As marionetas são manipuladas directamente e são construídas em esponja.<br /><br /><strong>Espectáculo ”Auto da Barca do Inferno”</strong><br />“O Auto da Barca do Inferno” visita um dos textos clássicos da Dramaturgia portuguesa. Falamos claro está de Gil Vicente, considerado por muitos o pai do Teatro.<br />Esta é uma visão diferente sobre a sua obra e sobre como a figura já de si tão caracterizada e estilizada através do texto, ganha forma através da figura de uma marioneta. Ao longo da peça as personagens vão-se apresentando perante a barca do céu e a barca do inferno. Este espectáculo, explora a relação do actor manipulador, nas suas diferentes vertentes. O nome herdou das cabanas dos colonos, que desciam, pela Primavera, de Arouca e terras vizinhas, para semear pão e mais tarde para as colheitas.<br />Mas a terra sequiosa foi tomando lentamente o espaço do mar e este como que obedecendo viu crescer o areal. E os peixes viam as cabanas cada vez mais longe.<br />Com tanta terra à vista, lentamente os homens foram plantando casas, estas agora mais robustas e duradouras. De entre elas viu-se erguer uma linda Igreja.<br />E as casas trouxeram mais casas e mais casas…<br />Cabanões era, por fim, um manto grande de casas coloridas que se estendia até bem perto do mar.<br />E quando já eram muitos os habitantes de Cabanões, nasceu Ovar. Het was liefde op het eerste gezicht. Sinds kort is juf Riek haar eigen web-log gestart waarop de avonturen van Sjaak (Jean Jacques) in groep 4 te volgen zijn. I am writing this while waiting for the Scene 1 to render, a lot of things I have been through in the last three months. During my break in december I went home to Indonesia and studied the real 'Wayang kulit' performance. I was really fascinated by the movement of the characters and was totally impressed by the skill of the 'Dalang' (Puppetier). I realize it is such a challenge for me to be able to animate my character to mimic the movement of the real shadow play. From the jittery arms when they talk to a real fast action fight, cough and laughter, from leaps to a 360º spin.<br /><br />Aside from that, I had someone to custom made the traditional frame to ship to the states for my installation. I was pretty happy about that because they managed to make on out of a real antique wooden carving frame and it can be knocked down and ship in a compact box.<br /><br />I'm really lucky to get a room in Anezka Sebek's studio on this final semester. Anezka has a lot of experience in film and digital motion projects. Most of the people in that class are doing a narrative piece like I do. Anezka also once lived in Indonesia and she grew up watching the shadow play. Therefore I think she is a very good advisor and critique for my project. <br /><br />It was quite a headache to finally had to put up a production schedule for this project completion. There is still a lot to be done to be able to complete the animation. Before midterm I had to do a talent search for Indonesian actors to read the dialog of the animation. All came out smoothly I didn't have much difficulty as I thought I would to find them in NY and they are very talented people too. After getting the final soundtrack done I worked on a test animation using the 3rd scene of my storyboard where the real transformation is happening. <br /><br />With the help of my advance digital motion instructor, James Conklin, I could build the characters and the scene in AE 3d world. Omdat de grote menspoppen best groot zijn (65 cm) wordt nog wel eens gedacht dat de kleine menspoppen bedoeld zijn voor kleine kinderen en de grote menspoppen voor grotere kinderen. Dat is niet het geval! </p> <p>Jonge kinderen vinden zo'n grote pop vaak heerlijk, kunnen er goed mee overweg en kunnen zich er makkelijk achter verschuilen als ze daar behoefte aan hebben. Ik gebruik zelf uitsluitend grote menspoppen omdat ze zowel voor volwassenen als voor kinderen goed bespeelbaar zijn. Bij de kleine poppen is de spelingang in het hoofd aanzienlijk kleiner (dit geldt niet voor de handen) waardoor ze voor volwassenen vaak wat krap aanvoelen. Daardoor is het moeilijker om de mimiek van de pop vorm te geven. De grote menspoppen hebben veel meer ruimte in het hoofd waardoor je er makkelijker in kunt en er veel meer emoties mee kunt uitdrukken, dit biedt oneindig veel mogelijkheden! </p> <p>Hoewel ik me realiseer dat de grote poppen duurder zijn dan de kleine, adviseer ik eigenlijk altijd te kiezen voor een grote pop omdat je daar veel meer mee kunt. Tijdens de workshops die ik geef hoor ik dit ook terug van mensen die beroepsmatig met een kleine pop werken! Een grote pop blijkt in de meeste gevallen en betere aanschaf te zijn dan een kleine pop. Wanneer de pop uitsluitend gebruikt wordt door een kind, kan zowel voor een grote als voor een kleine pop gekozen worden. I began by writing it in mixed Indonesian and English language and putting an extra English subtitle underneath. However As I read it out loud in class, most of them seemed to understand the flow just from the English words slipped inside the conversation. <br /><br />So I went to rework my draft screenplay yesterday because even though it was quite understandable but still it needs a lot of work to balance out the clues to the audience without having the distruptive subtitles.<br /><br /><a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://a.parsons.edu/~mzacharia/thesis/THEMODERNSHADOWrev.htm">The Modern Shadow Script</a><br /><br />I'm personally not very hapy yet with the script and I'm looking for ways to refine it. She idolized Britney very much and try to copy her style.. even though physically she's quite different :( <br /><br />I imagine I can build a story of a guy, a college student who is totally into the west from his style to his values in his daily life. This guy idolize Fergie BEP / J-Lo very much, sets her song as his ringtone, rich, popular and a little cocky when it gets to relationship. Then, first day of the semester, he met a girl in his new class. This girl is relatively conservative, smart, does not care too much about the latest fashion. The guys noticed her but then she turned out to be very different than the typical girl he knows / expect to meet. For e.g, In the performance of 'Irawan's Wedding' there's a scene of when Arjuna sends his own son'r wife home to Kingdom Dwarawati after his son failed to be punctual at his presence. This scenario shows how important a man needs to obey his father even sometime leaving his personal life behind.<br /><br />My goal is to have a message in the story that no matter how strong the western globalization forces are attacking Indonesia, they could change the people's lifestyle but their values should remain the same. <br /><br />To create a story I asked myself this question: What about the western culture that is harmful to Indonesian Traditional culture?<br /><br />The 'Ind-glish'<br /><br />The use of English words in Indonesian languange now are getting more common. Especially with the use of computer and technology, Indonesian has become more familiar with the English words used in computer applications and use it on their daily base situation as well. On the other hand the western movies and music also bring a strong influence into the Indonesian language. People uses 'thank you' instead of 'terimakasih', 'sorry' instead of 'maaf' and many more. The knowledge of English as an international language is good but it is harmful in a way that it has been adapted much into the authentic Indonesian language. Unfortunetaly many of the Indonesians especially the ones live in the big cities use english words within their conversation as part of 'a high-end lifestyle' even a lot of times they would pronounced it wrongly. As language represents origin also the cultural history of somebody it is should not be something to be proud of to speak the 'Ind-glish' language.<br /><br />Brand-minded<br /><br />Because of the high social discepancies happening in Indonesia and also the high rate of Western currency to trade in, people see the 'western branded' elements as superior. Mc Donalds and Kentucky Fried Chicken are taken as special venues to celebrate or to go on a date. Wearing western labels including the middle class ones means status for most people especially if you can afford the designer's ones. Indonesians need to realize the riches of style of their own country and the uniqueness of its own. Then, they will realize that global brands are in fact generalization of the specials.<br /><br />Santa Claus and The Roman gods<br /><br />In an established country like The United States, holidays are celebrated merryly with themes and icons. The tourist attraction places in Europe are decorated with western classical sculpture and paintings, often uses Roman gods for their inspirations. Again since abroad vacation is a luxury for most people in Indonesia, the ones tasted the western often think that by celebrating the holidays with certain decorations, decorating their house with classical statues will make people think of them as superior or have higher taste in the society. Just if these people would recognize the potential of the beauty of Indonesian culture and make that as an element to show off.<br /><br /><br />Story Idea #1: At one point of time, there are two brothers of a good Indonesian family. One of the brother goes after a girl. This girl is very westernized in the way she talks and carries herself. She does not respect the boy's family custom and the older brother notices that. The character needs to show subtle alteration of his / her appearance, caused by westernization but still has bo recognizable as an authentic Indonesian shadow puppets. <br /><br />After reading the full translated scripts of three stories that are often performed in wayang kulit : The Reincarnation of Rama, Irawan's Wedding, and the Death of Karna. [source: On Thrones of Gold] I have come to undestand more about the relation, personalities and dynamics of the Wayang characters.<br /><br />In a wayang live performances, the same characters are often represented by two or more puppets. The unique instance of each character is called the 'wanda'. The wanda of each characters mostly painted in gold and black. The gold versions normally are used in a calm final scene and the black ones in battle scenes. I learned that Bima is the biggest in their physical appearance but yet, Arjuna is known as the most excellent knight. I imagine this character to travel alone on his big motorbike with the wind blowing on his hair, outgoing well built and not very neat in terms of fashion.<br /><br />Arjuna, is know for his rounded excellence, he is very fast in making his decisions, as it was told in the story of 'The Reincarnation of Rama' as there was an abduction of his cousin's sister, princess Sumbadra, Arjuna left right away to rescue her without letting the others including the King (princess Sumbadra's brother) know of his departure. For e.g.: When Princess Sumbadra (at that moment already become Arjuna's first wive) was dissapointed with Arjuna's decision in divorcing his own son Abimanyu's marriage to Siti Sendari, Arjjuna responded to her "Your place is in the kitchen, woman. With a mix of the ancient Mahabharata, Ramayana, mixed together with Javanene folklores born the comtemporary stories and comedy of Panokowan (with four clowns named Semar, Gareng, Petruk, and Bagong) There are much morals to learn from these stories and many traditional families still name their children after the characters because of the characters positive features and abilities.<br /><br />In the modern days, the television screens in Indonesia is filled more and more with western series such as Sex in the City, Bold and Beautiful, and Friends. The screening of Holliwood movies are accessable in every small town and suburbs. The young kids are more excited in watching Star Wars, Disney animation and Spiderman compares to the local folkrores. There is a significant difference in taste, values, preference and diet of the urban people nowadays. They go into the 'mall' and spend 10 - 20x more expensive on Western designer's clothes and fast food. With the increasing traffic in major cities like Jakarta, the working class rather spends the rush hours socializing outside their homes that often leads to love affairs and divorces.<br /><br />The unavoidable globalization is a good thing to drive forward a developing country like Indonesia. However, it is almost a shame if the modern generation doesn't continue to nurture the good values, traditions and customs.<br /><br />I am passionate to recreate a role model of lifestyle after globalization in the Wayang forms that hopefully will bring awareness to the audience that no matter how much we have been changed by the globalization, there are timeless values that remains.<br /><br />I chose wayang as a medium also because of its timeless value. Wayang kulit has been acknowledge to be one of the greatest and oldest form of performing arts internationally. Also, in Indonesia itself, the Wayang still remains as the popular local and tourist attraction. Therefore I see Wayang as a bridge between the two worlds. It is also believed as the philosophy behind the shadowed political dictatorship of General Soeharto (Suharto in English word), Indonesia’s former president. Suharto was awarded to take an emergency control of the nation after his bloody efforts in wiping the communist party. The ruthless action of the wipe out was never acknowledge as truth and the number of the people killed in near after September 30th, 1965 may never be known, but it was estimated between 500,000 – 3,000,000 lives. The performance has taken place over 800 years even before any religions came into the country. The first form of 'wayang' was 'wayang golek' or the doll puppets. They are performed with rituals of the country's animist background. They believed that during a wayang performance they can call for assistance from their ancestor's spirits. Also during these performances they believe the spirit of the ancestors are protecting them from the evil. After the Hinduism came in Indonesia, they changed the 'wayang' performance into a tool to spread their religion through stories such as their epic of Mahabaratha and Ramayana. When Islam started to spread in Indonesia, they abandonned a human-formed (the doll) type of performance, therefore in Java they started to make the leather flat puppets with very stylized exaggerated forms and proportions. <br /><br />Wayang kulit (leather puppets shadow play) is often performed in public holidays, religious festivals, weddings, birth celebrations and circumcisions in Java and Bali. The performance takes place for a straight 8-9 hours from dusk till dawn without intermissions. Because of the great challenge to perform a wayang kulit, the Dalang (puppeteer) cannot be just an ordinary people. First he needs to have a very strong physical health and intelligent to be able to sit crossed-legged through out the whole performance and be able to control the action and every detail of elements needed for every scene. The dalang does the whole performance as a one man show for nine successive hours. From narrating sections of expositions and descriptions, speaks the dialouque of each character, sings the mood songs on transitions, directs the 'gamelan' ensemble for the background and has to beat the kechrek (rattle) with his right foot almost continuously. Seriously this dalang is hard core! As my eyes tried to focus on it I realized that he was just a statue. Around him were placed also his wife and children. Turning on the local TV chanel a country music party program was going on cheered up by Indonesians dancing and singing in cowboy outfits. Hanging out with people I hear English words being slipped in everywhere in conversations as if it is another Indonesian word. With phrases such as “ So what gitu loh? “ and “Please dech!” created a brand new fusion language the ‘Ind-Glish’.<br /><br />It has been a long observation for me while I was growing up in this country that much part of our culture has been altered by western values. However not until I tasted the west going to college in Sydney and on my summer break from this grad program in NY this year I noticed the changes got so much more radical. <br /><br />None of the people I know including house' maids and drivers do not carry a cell phone. People meet in starbucks rather than in their private homes. Samen met hem heb ik tien dagen lang genoten van een Spaans feest. We hebben gekeken naar prachtige kostuums, geluisterd naar prachtige muziek, gewandeld in een prachtige omgeving en geleefd zoals de Spanjaarden dat doen. Het heeft ons bij elkaar gebracht en Bibo ging mee naar huis. We vlogen op een prachtige avond in een grote stalen vogel terug naar Nederland en Bibo keek zijn ogen uit: zoiets moois had hij nog nooit gezien. Het werd een twee uur durende droomvlucht maar toen we dan eindelijk geland waren wilde Bibo toch vooral snel naar huis. We werden opgehaald en naar huis gebracht en daar bleek dat Bibo een erg gezellige huisgenoot is. Hij zingt mee met de radio, kweekt aardbeien in de tuin, speelt met de kat, kijkt naar Sesamstraat en eet wat de pot schaft. Ik ben iemand die van vrijwel elk gegeven een verhaal kan maken. Ik heb dat altijd al gekund waardoor ik het nooit als iets uitzonderlijks heb gezien. Door mijn enorme fantasie ontstaat er telkens weer een geloofwaardig verhaal voor kinderen. Daarnaast stelt de digitale camera me in staat om onderwijsondersteunend beeldmateriaal te creëren. Regelmatig laad ik de poppen in de auto en neem ik ze mee naar allerlei plaatsen waar ik ze dan in een pose zet en fotografeer. Wanneer je deze foto's in een album verzamelt ontstaat er een beeld van het bezigheden van de pop, van zijn voorkeuren, van zijn familie, van zijn vrienden, van zijn tijd op school en van zijn vrije tijds besteding. Voor mij is het ontdekken van het karakter van de pop een wezenlijke aktiviteit die noodzakelijk is om respect voor de pop te krijgen en hem geloofwaardig te maken. Respect en geloofwaardigheid gaan hand in hand want alleen wanneer de speler de pop respecteert ontstaat er een veilig leefklimaat. Binnen een dergelijk klimaat wordt het mogelijk op een open en respectvolle manier met kinderen te communiceren. <p>Wanneer je probeert de wereld door de ogen van de pop te bekijken, merk je dat je spontaner gaat reageren, dat je sneller toegeeft aan je impulsen en veel meer lacht. Wanneer je de wereld van de wonderbaarlijke poppen betreedt, dan wordt alles ineens mogelijk, dan kan een vijand een vriend worden en een droom werkelijkheid. In de wonderbaarlijke wereld van de poppen worden oplossingen snel bedacht en ruzies snel bijgelegd, we willen vooral plezier hebben en leren van en met elkaar. We begroeten de dag en dansen ons er een weg doorheen, leren moet vooral leuk zijn, de school een plek waar je graag wilt zijn. En de pop maakt die plek leuker, uitdagender en veiliger voor een kind. <br /> Je kunt bij het bedenken van een karakter voor de pop putten uit je eigen omgeving en je eigen ervaringen. Je hoeft ze niet letterlijk te gebruiken maar kunt er een draai aan geven of gebruik maken van een verhaal wat je gehoord hebt. Het makkelijkst is het als je het kind in jezelf aan het woord laat en het laat vertellen wat het vertellen wil en vragen wat het vragen wil. Wanneer het kind in jezelf naar buiten komt ontstaat er een heel sprankelende communicatie met kinderen waarbij je toegelaten wordt in zijn hun belevingswereld. <br /> </p> </article> <article> <h1>Een pop introduceren</h1> <p>Thu, 06 Oct 2005 10:25:08 -0700</p> <p>De meest gestelde vraag die ik krijg met betrekking tot de poppen is: HOE BEGIN JE? Wat doe je als je de pop voor het eerst meeneemt naar de klas of naar de groep waarmee je wilt gaan werken.</p> <p>Je doet er goed aan om eerst zelf een beeld te vormen van wie de pop is (zie De pop karakter geven) zodat je antwoord kunt geven op een aantal vragen die de kinderen zeker zullen stellen. Kinderen willen altijd weten wie de pop is, waar hij vandaan komt en wat hij leuk vindt. Hou er rekening mee dat de pop heel veel kan losmaken bij de kinderen en dat ze de pop massaal willen vasthouden en knuffelen. Om dit een beetje in banen te leiden geef ik je hieronder een aantal tips:</p> <p>1. <b>Maak het niet te ingewikkeld </b>en denk simpel<br /> 2. <b>Sta erbij stil dat de pop nieuw is en dus nog moet kennismaken</b>, het kan zijn dat de pop verlegen reageert, of alle kinderen een hand wil geven, misschien wil de pop wel alleen maar kijken, of zit hij juist vol met plannetjes, verhalen en spelletjes. <br /> 3. <b>Maak de pop geloofwaardig</b>. Jij bent voor de pop de meest vertrouwde figuur omdat hij jou het langst kent. Het is dus logisch dat hij zich bij jou het meest veilig voelt en soms met jou wil overleggen. Kinderen herkennen dit van zichzelf en ervaren dit als heel vertrouwd en veilig.<br /> 4. <b>Maak de introductie niet te lang</b>, de pop wil immers kijken wat de kinderen allemaal doen in de klas en dat geeft jou en de kinderen ook even de tijd om de nieuwe gast te laten bezinken. Het vergroot de geloofwaardigheid van de pop als hij gedoseerd wordt gebruikt. Ik laat de pop regelmatig aangeven dat het genoeg is en dat hij even wil uitrusten op de kast.<br /> 5. <b>Wil niet te veel tegelijk!</b> Laat de kinderen rustig wennen aan de aanwezigheid van de pop. Laat hem aanvankelijk alleen tijdens een kring verschijnen en experimenteer eerst met zijn mogelijkheden. <br /> 6. <b>Geef hem niet direct mee naar huis </b>want welk kind durft bij vreemden te logeren? De pop dus ook niet<br /> 7. <b>Geniet van wat de pop bij de kinderen losmaakt</b>, geef je over aan het plezier dat hij oplevert en verleg je grenzen. Je zult zien dat het mogelijk is je eigen Wonderbaarlijke Wereld te creëren. </p> <p>Wanneer de pop eenmaal geïntroduceerd is, begint hij te leven en laat hij jou en de kinderen nieuwe ervaringen opdoen. Eenvoudige spelletjes als "Tik, tik, wie ben ik?" en "Hoeveel zitten er nu achter je?" krijgen een heel andere dimensie wanneer de pop meespeelt. De pop weet de aandacht van de kinderen als geen ander vast te houden en zorgt voor heel veel mooie momenten en prachtige interacties met kinderen. De kinderen verheugen zich op de momenten met de pop en vragen om de pop. Regelmatig komt een kind naar me toe en zegt: 'ik denk dat Sjuul vandaag met mij mee wil, ze zei dat tegen me in de poppenhoek'. Eigenlijk zegt het kind: 'ik wil graag dat Sjuul vandaag met me meegaat, ik wil haar graag bij me hebben.' Ik kan zo'n verzoek zelden weerstaan en gun het kind zijn moment met de pop, dat pop wil inderdaad bij hem logeren! Er gaat een grote positieve kracht van de pop uit en die kracht wil ik graag benutten.</p> </article> <article> <h1>De nieuwe collectie</h1> <p>Wed, 21 Sep 2005 13:20:09 -0700</p> <p>.....en van alles wat er nog niet is, heb ik inmiddels wel de foto's. Kijk maar op de site.</p> <p>Onder de knop Assortiment is nu een totaaloverzicht te vinden van alle poppen binnen de collectie zodat je ze allemaal kunt vinden op 1 pagina, dat leek me wel handig!</p> <p>Van de Sesamstraatcollectie zijn ook foto's beschikbaar, ze zijn erg leuk, ik ben benieuwd naar jullie reacties:<br /> <center></center></p> <p>Andere nieuwkomers zijn kleine Lisa en kleine Louis, ze zijn al binnen dus ik heb ze al goed kunnen bekijken: de kleine versies van Lisa en Louis zijn pittiger dan de grote, maar dat geldt eigenlijk voor alle kleine menspoppen. </p> <p>Ook Max en Anna zijn binnen, Max heeft rossig haar en wordt geleverd in een pyamabroek, zachte trui en zachte pantoffels die uit kunnen. Hij is vooral lief en vriendelijk en draagt geen zware kledingstukken. Anna heeft grappige staartjes en een hele vriendelijke en zachte uitstraling, ze draagt een nachthemd en pantoffels. In het echt is Anna veel leuker dan op het plaatje!</p> <p>Helen</p> </article> <article> <h1>Leuke foto's</h1> <p>Thu, 15 Sep 2005 10:57:17 -0700</p> <center></center> Dit zijn Joep en Joris, je kent ze nog wel, van Wouter en Judith. Wouter kwam speciaal voor Judith met de trein naar Duiven om daar een pop te kopen, later kwamen ze samen terug om er nog eentje uit te zoeken. Het was leuk om te zien en inmiddels zijn Joep en Joris helemaal in het nieuw gestoken en ken je ze bijna niet meer terug. Sinds kort zijn er losse kledingstukken te koop ik zal er wat bestellen zodat ik kan kijken of het iets is. JaNee houdt erg van verkleedpartijtjes en kan uren doorbrengen met de Wehkampcatalogus Ik heb haar geld gegeven voor haar verjaardag en daarvoor heeft ze een aantal nieuwe kleren uitgezocht. Ze heeft smaak vind ik. Kijk maar: <center></center> Ze heeft zelfs aan mooie strikjes en sokken gedacht. Het wordt nu 's avonds weer kouder dus die sokken zijn slim. Ik ervaar het als een voorrecht om elke dag met deze poppen te kunnen werken en vind het heel erg leuk om per pop te bekijken wat de mogelijkheden zijn. Regelmatig neem ik een pop mee naar huis om daar dingen mee te ondernemen om erachter te komen waar de kracht van deze pop ligt. Alle poppen zijn verschillend van karakter en dat maakt ze ook zo boeiend en veelzijdig. <p>Meer foto's volgen zodra ze er zijn, stuur ze dus vooral toe.</p> </article> <article> <h1>Voor het eerst vliegen</h1> <p>Thu, 08 Sep 2005 15:09:12 -0700</p> <p>Vorig jaar kreeg ik mijn vriendje Bibo vlak voordat ik op vakantie ging naar Spanje. Ik ging alleen dus kon wel een vriendje gebruiken vond mijn vriend.</p> <p>We gingen vliegen en Bibo ging mee als handbagage. De gezagvoerder was duidelijk gecharmeerd van de pop en heette Bibo van harte welkom. Bibo vertelde dat hij nog nooit had gevlogen (tenminste, niet dat hij zich kon herinneren) en dat hij het best spannend vond allemaal. </p> <p>De gezagvoerder nam uitgebreid de tijd om Bibo te vertellen wat hem te wachten stond en zei tegen hem dat hij vooral bij mij op schoot moest blijven zitten, dan kwam het allemaal goed. Op een gegeven moment ging het opstijgen dan echt gebeuren we moesten de seatbelts fastenen en begonnen te rijden.</p> <p>De gezagvoerder stelde zich voor door de intercom en sloot zijn boodschap af met de mededeling: WE HEBBEN EEN SPECIALE GAST AAN BOORD, BIBO. HIJ HEEFT NOG NOOIT GEVLOGEN EN VINDT HET ALLEMAAL REUZE SPANNEND. BIBO HOU JE VAST WANT DAAR GAAN WE!<br /> </p> </article> <article> <h1>Onze familie gaat uitbreiden.....</h1> <p>Thu, 08 Sep 2005 14:56:43 -0700</p> <p>......en we krijgen er nogal wat familieleden bij.</p> <p>Max en Anna (beiden blond rossig, moeilijk te zeggen vanaf het plaatje) versterken de grote menspoppen, er komen kleine uitvoeringen van Lisa en Louis. Bij de dieren komt er een hond, een kuiken, een struisvogel, en een beer bij. Acht nieuwe leden dus.</p> <p>Maar daar blijft het niet bij want vanaf oktober worden een aantal bekende Sesamstraatfiguren onder het Living Puppets label op de markt gebracht. Dat betekent dat er 65 cm grote uitvoeringen komen van Bert, Ernie, Koekiemonster, Oskar en Grover. Waarbij Bert langer is dan Ernie. Daarnaast zijn er ook kleine uitvoeringen (50-55 cm) van Ernie en Bert verkrijgbaar. Al deze poppen zijn uitgevoerd met de bekende Living Puppet handen en een goed bespeelbare kop. </p> <p>De prijzen vallen mee (ik had gedacht dat ze duurder zouden zijn), de poppen liggen in dezelfde prijsklasse als de Living Puppets (zo rond de 80 euro voor een grote pop en 60 euro voor een kleinere uitvoering).</p> <p>In totaal krijgen we er dus 15 nieuwe familieleden bij! </p> <p>Ik moet aan de slag om daar een nieuwe kast voor te maken zodat ik ze direct allemaal een plek kan geven in het grote Living Puppets huis. Het is een leuk moment wanneer de nieuwe leden van de familie arriveren, dat kan ik je wel vertellen. Zodra ik foto's heb van de nieuwkomers zal ik ze met je delen.</p> <p>De poppenkraam is zich aan het voorbereiden op de komende feestmaanden en verwacht een drukke tijd. Wanneer je erover denkt om een pop kado te geven de komende maanden is het altijd slim om deze van te voren alvast te reserveren. Dat voorkomt teleurstellingen. Ik doe mijn uiterste best om snel te kunnen leveren maar elke pop moet gemaakt worden en soms is de vraag groter dan mensenhanden kunnen bijhouden en duurt het wat langer.</p> <p>Dit was het voor nu, tot later.......</p> <p></p> <p> </p> </article> <article> <h1>Christina in de blije jurk</h1> <p>Thu, 08 Sep 2005 14:26:59 -0700</p> <p></p><p>Dit is Christina, ze is inmiddels hersteld van haar gebroken been, heeft haar pyama alleen nog 's nachts aan en ook de pleister heeft ze niet meer nodig. Christina is makkelijk te verkleden omdat er geen kledingstukken aan haar lijf zijn vastgestikt. Zij is de enige meisjespop bij wie dit het geval is. Van de jongens zijn er bij Benny en Lukas geen kledingstukken vastgestikt.</p> <p>Het is jammer dat Christina in een bepaalde hoek gedrukt wordt door dat gipsbeen want het is een hele vrolijke pop, vergelijkbaar met Lotta en Jenny. Kleren maken de man of vrouw en datzelfde geldt ook wel een beetje voor de pop. Hoe hipper hoe beter lijkt het soms maar niets is minder waar is mijn ervaring.....</p> <p>.......de pop waar je als eerste op valt is de beste, ongeacht zijn kleding! Die kledingstukken dat lost zichzelf wel op, de Zeeman, Wibra en alle uitverkopen van het land zijn een goede inspiratiebron. Mijn pop heeft ook een jas want je kunt het niet maken om van een kind te vragen zijn jas aan te doen en de pop dan zonder jas mee naar buiten te nemen. Dat klopt niet, vandaar die jas.</p> <p>De jurk van Christina is van JaNee, die noemt het haar blije jurk. Hij heeft 2 jaar bij mij in de klas doorgebracht en inmiddels ken ik hem een beetje. Het was al snel duidelijk dat Samori het erg moeilijk vond om langer dan 5 tellen op zijn stoel te blijven zitten en dat hij een grote bewegingsdrang had. In kringsituaties botste dat nog wel eens omdat het voorkwam dat Samori zijn buurman of buurvrouw per ongeluk een mep gaf tijdens zijn spontane uitbraken van bewegingsenergie. Hij was altijd heel verdrietig wanneer hij iemand pijn gedaan had en nog verdrietiger als iemand vervolgens niet meer met hem wilde spelen. Gelukkig had Samori ook een heel groot hart en het vermogen om ruzies op een leuke manier bij te leggen waardoor hij nooit lang verdrietig hoefde te zijn. Samori is niet alleen maar druk, hij is vooral heel ondernemend, heel enthousiast, vol vragen, op zoek naar antwoorden, hij zit vol levenslust en dat is een kracht.</p> <p>Ik ben dol op hem en ben blij dat hij zoveel poppen om zich heen heeft. Ze kunnen hem troost geven wanneer hij dat nodig heeft en met hem mee gaan wanneer hij gaat spelen. Hij heeft met allemaal een speciale band maar ze zijn allemaal verschillend. Zijn vrienden Karlos, Tobi en Robby geven hem houvast en rust en da's best belangrijk als je zoveel herrie in je hoofd hebt.</p> </article> <article> <h1>Kinderen met een contactstoornis</h1> <p>Wed, 24 Aug 2005 13:29:04 -0700</p> <p>Poppen hebben een bijzondere uitwerking op kinderen met een contactstoornis omdat de pop naadloos aansluit bij hun fantasiewereld. Via de mail krijg ik regelmatig verhalen binnen over ontmoetingen tussen kinderen met een contactstoornis en een pop.</p> <p>Mijn eerste ervaring hiermee heb ik jaren geleden opgedaan en fascineert me nog steeds.</p> <p>Casper was een kind dat bij de kleuters al opviel, het was moeilijk om echt contact met hem te krijgen. In groep 2 veranderde dat niet maar omdat Casper goed op niveau zat ging hij door naar groep 3. Toen Casper in groep 3 zat was ik juf van groep 1/2 en hoorde van Casper tijdens leerlingbesprekingen. Casper kon wel meekomen maar maakte geen contact met andere kinderen. Hij was niet alleen want andere kinderen maakten wel contact met Casper. Het was een soort eenrichtingsverkeer. </p> <p>Het toeval wilde dat ik het jaar erna in groep 4 terecht kwam als juf en Casper in mijn klas kreeg. Ik heb altijd met poppen gewerkt en in groep 4 speelden die ook een rol en gingen die ook met de kinderen mee naar huis. Al vrij snel na het begin van het schooljaar kwam de moeder van Casper bij me en vertelde me dat Casper thuis over mij sprak en dat dat heel uitzonderlijk was. Hij had verteld over mijn kat, over mijn poppen, over mijn kleren en vond alles wat ik deed belangrijk. Zijn moeder had dit nog niet zo vaak meegemaakt en was wel benieuwd naar mij. </p> <p>Casper begon ook uit zichzelf naar me toe te komen, stak zijn vinger op als hij een vraag had en maakte grapjes. Hij vond het heerlijk als hij een pop mee naar huis mocht nemen en wist precies wat de poppen bezighield. Casper communiceerde via de poppen en was in het bijzonder gefascineerd door de wijze vrouw Bientje omdat hij via haar al zijn vragen kon stellen. En dat waren er veel, maar dat was niet erg. Casper uitte zich en dat was het belangrijkst.</p> </article> <article> <h1>Kinderen met een taalachterstand</h1> <p>Wed, 24 Aug 2005 13:16:28 -0700</p> <p>In mijn klas had ik regelmatig te maken met anderstalige kinderen of kinderen met een taalachterstand. Voor deze kinderen bleek de pop een veilig vriendje te zijn.<br /> <center></center></p> <p>Kinderen gebruiken een universele taal wanneer je met de pop praten en de pop vindt het niet erg wanneer woorden verkeerd worden uitgesproken. De pop begrijpt het kind toch wel. Wat ik vaak heb zien gebeuren is dat kinderen de pop gebruiken als middel om tot communicatie te komen. Ze durven met de pop op de hand naar een ander toe te stappen en een vraag te stellen. In het begin zijn de vragen kort, maar al snel worden de vragen langer, komen er steeds meer antwoorden en ontstaan er zelfs verhalen. </p> <p>Ik heb een Turks jongetje in de klas gehad met een taalachterstand. Dat was niet gek want er werd thuis geen Nederlands met hem gesproken. Aanvankelijk had ik hem te hoog ingeschat omdat hij heel zelfstandig was en zich over het algemeen goed kon redden. Aan het einde van groep 1 bleek tijdens de Cito dat zijn woordenschat ver achter lag. Omdat hij nog een poosje te gaan had in zijn kleutertijd kon ik nog een hoop met hem doen. Ik begon hem taallesjes te geven samen met de pop, hij vond de poppen leuk en voelde zich er veilig bij. Het werd een succes want hij leerde steeds meer woorden en durfde zich steeds meer in de groep te mengen. Op een gegeven moment merkte ik dat hij liedjes en versjes goed kon onthouden en dat hij het leuk vond om dat aan andere kinderen te demonstreren. Daarmee kreeg zijn zelfvertrouwen een enorme impuls en dat was dus een reden voor de pop om hem vaak uit te nodigen te zingen. </p> <p>Uiteindelijk moest het jongetje nog wel een extra kleuterjaar hebben om zijn taalachterstand weg te werken maar dat vond hij niet erg. Hij mocht bij mij blijven en waar ik was daar waren de poppen!</p> <p>De aanwezigheid van de pop vergroot het gevoel van veiligheid bij het kind en dat is voor alle kinderen een groot goed. De pop wijst het kind niet af en begrijpt het kind altijd, de pop is een vriend.</p> </article> <article> <h1>Bijzondere ontmoetingen met de pop</h1> <p>Tue, 23 Aug 2005 08:53:55 -0700</p> <p>In dit log kun je al je ervaringen met en over de pop vertellen.</p> <p>Ik zal de kop afbijten:<br /> <br /> Dit is Henk en Bibo helpt Henk zijn weg te vinden in de klas. Zonder Bibo durft Henk niet zoveel maar als Bibo er is, leeft Henk helemaal op en durft hij veel meer. Het was heel bijzonder om dat te zien en het is dan ook begrijpelijk dat Henk vooral boos op mij was toen ik vorig jaar langdurig ziek werd: hij vond het niet eerlijk dat Bibo nu ook niet meer naar school kwam. Uiteindelijk heb ik afscheid genomen als juf en dat was voor Henk verschrikkelijk, want nu zag hij zijn vriendje Bibo niet meer.</p> <p>Uiteindelijk is het helemaal goed gekomen en kreeg Henk zijn eigen Bibo. Van zijn moeder hoor ik regelmatig hoe het Henk en Bibo vergaat en dat is leuk. Ze vertelde me:</p> <p><em><center>Henk en Bibo zijn dikke maatjes<br /> toen Esther (zijn zus) in het ziekenhuis lag vroeg ze of Bibo ook een nachtje mocht<br /> logeren. De ontwikkeling van het lespakket heeft langer geduurd dan ik aanvankelijk had verwacht en dat had alles te maken met het steeds weer ontstaan van nieuwe invalshoeken en nieuwe ideeen. Er is zelfs een kindervoorstelling bij het lespakket ontstaan die een goed beeld geeft van de mogelijkheden van het lespakket.</p> <p>Om het lespakket te promoten en eventueel nog wat bij te stellen ben ik op zoek naar instellingen, scholen, bibliotheken e.d. waar ik het pakket kan uitproberen en kan testen op verschillende doelgroepen. De meeste andere poppen hebben kledingsstukken die uit kunnen. Alleen bij Lotta en Robby kan niets uitgetrokken worden, bij hen is het echter wel mogelijk om andere kledingstukken over de bestaande outfit aan te trekken. Zelf heb ik een kleine kledingkast voor mijn Living Puppets met daarin wat andere broeken, overgooiertjes, een jas en wat shirts met korte mouwen in de maat 72. Hiermee kan ik de poppen waarmee ik werk wat aanpassen aan het seizoen en inspelen op de beleving van jonge kinderen. Het lijkt me leuk om dit log te gebruiken om foto's uit te wisselen van verkleedpartijtjes om elkaar zo de gedaanteverwisseling van de pop te laten zien. Lisa wordt een hele andere meid met een overgooier aan. Hierdoor kunnen kinderen er lekker mee ravotten en is het ook geen ramp als hij een beetje vies wordt. Het spreekt voor zich dat vlekken van permanente aard niet te verwijderen zijn van de pop.</p> <p>Hoe moet je de pop wassen?<br /> Trek de kleren zoveel mogelijk uit en was deze apart van de pop. <br /> * Kleren die aan de pop vastzitten worden meegewassen.<br /> * Stel de wasmachine in op 30 graden en voeg een beetje wasverzachter toe voor de haren.<br /> * Laat de wasmachine draaien op het normale programma.<br /> * Droog de pop in het zonnetje of een andere warme plek.</p> <p>* STOP EEN POP NOOIT IN DE WASDROGER WANT DAN KAN ER DIT GEBEUREN:<br /> </p> <p>Links Pelle zoals hij hoort te zijn en rechts Pelle nadat hij uit de wasdroger kwam!</p> <p>Niet alleen de haren en de kleuren van Pelle hadden ernstige schade opgelopen, ook zijn vulling was vlokkerig en hard geworden en zijn schoenen gescheurd.
