Publishing a book is a good idea. But that is a normal thing. How about creating a Website specially for quiz, with interactive modules. So that schools can create accounts and ask their students to login. So this is much more than your blog. If you are interested please let me know we can do that for you.

Productivity slips as people become more oriented towards family, friends and celebration. Spending goes up, and companies try to close out their end of year budgets. This is one of the subtle observations you can make at large companies. They are more willing to purchase trial, test or laboratory products at this point in the year than any other. It is a point where a new prototype can slip in the back door. Companies trying to spend their last dollars, but don't want to impact the organization at a time when everyone is distracted. This allows a product entry point that doesn't exist at any other time in the year.

BrainNook is the first syllabus-based, educational, virtual world for children. It consists of educational games closely matched to the NCERT syllabus (used in CBSE schools all over India), embedded within colourful virtual worlds. Children take on the role of an alien while exploring these virtual worlds and collecting "stars" by playing games. All the games in BrainNook are based on the NCERT Mathematics and English Grammar syllabus for Standards 4 and 5, and develop skills such as numeracy, literacy, reasoning, memorization, dexterity, and computer proficiency.

Our current release is aimed at 9 and 10 year old children.

BrainNook is in private beta and I wanted to open it up to the OpenCoffee Club community. We are looking for beta testers who are parents of children in the age group 8-11, or have been in the past. :-) You should show the product to at least one child in this age group, and optionally play it yourself.

After you finish playing it, you can send me your feedback by email (abhi@nunook.com), or reply to this thread. Some of the questions we would like to get answered are:

1. What did you find confusing? Were there times when you weren't sure what to do next?
2. How was the difficulty level of the games?

I am just in a mood to reminisce and been having some maudlin thoughts that I absolutely had to pen!

I remember a while ago an elderly gentleman (and a family friend) was pleasantly enquiring about us - how the kids are doing, how is my work and our general well being. When asking about work, he asked if we were still doing our own "stuff" . To his mind people in business were those who did not manage to snag a job.

For your talent and creativity you could have become an AVP at TCS by now, he admonished me. Instead you are struggling and doing all this by yourself. I did not know whether to be annoyed or amused - annoyed that he thinks I am wasting my time and amused as he thinks the work at any of the corporates would be all frills and feathers.

I could not help but think that for all the hype about having the guts to take your own course there is still a stigma around being an entrepreneur. In some circles it is tantamount to being selfish - that the entrepreneur has thought only about himself/herself and not really provided for the financial security of the family (especially if he/she is a first generation entrepreneur who takes the plunge without having a day job as a cushion). If someone decides to take the plunge after being in the corporate world for sometime, earning a decent salary, having a tidy investment tucked away, even then he is termed a risk taker to fret away all his savings.

When will being an entrepreneur be considered an investment. it is a legacy a parent can leave for his child to carry on. Or it will be a learning that can teach valuable lessons that are beyond any degrees.

There are somethings money can't buy and to me the sprit of entrepreneurship is priceless!

The onslaught of the social media and networking sites has caught us all in a virtual web where we feel connected only when we chat, send messages not more than 140 characters and generally feel better only when we update our status on these sites. The height of it was when one of my friends (whom I got back in touch after a long time) had to cancel our face to face meeting as he wanted to update his status on facebook and twitter that he has got back in touch with his schoolmate after 17 years! dig that!!!

Ok. Now to the matter at hand. when we see really silly updates on these sites like "Its a great Monday and I am just having my morning tea" we really think if these sites are designed with frivolous in mind and are of no significance to the serious business minded beings?

I beg to differ. Just as how we can reconnect with long lost friends and keep up with our friends all over the world, these sites are an easy and cost effective way to spread the message across about our business.

My theory is, like everything else we need to project the ideal image of our company in these sites as well. Any events or key news featuring our company/products can be quickly messaged here. This is a great platform as we do not need extraordinary writing skills - just keeping the message short, simple and straight would suffice.

What does it do: we usually think our gang of friends is clued into our business. Maybe at a peripheral level they are. But this will be a great way to keep them updated on the happenings on the business front as well. Who knows you may be doing something your friend on Facebook was looking out for!!

Even though backing up our data is extremely important, we often neglect it. Why? Well, because it’s just another thing you know you have to do, but you just “don’t have time” for. Believe me, once your computer crashes, you’re done. Worries? Multiplied and also, a lot of important data lost. I know it’s easier to just say “Backup? Oh, I’ll do it tomorrow, it’s not such a big a deal” Yeah, sure. And tomorrow? You’ll do it the next day? And then? Computer boom! And you’re like “If I had known this would happen I would have backed up my data”. I bet you would have. We don’t know if or when will it happen, but when it does we have to be prepared.

Dos. OK, well first of all and also the most important thing of all- back up your data! You don’t have to back up all of it, just the vital data, data that is indispensable to you. Just think what losing it would do to you. Second, use data storages carefully. If you use offline means, like CDs, DVDs, external hard drives, after you get your data on them, put them in a safe place. Then, if you don’t have safe room, make some: put the CDs in a dry, hard to reach for others, place. Third, every week or so, update your data storages. Add the new irreplaceable files so you don’t have to think about the risk of losing them. This is really a life saver.

Dos-part 2. A very good storage for your data is online storage with a very good password. It’s safer than offline storages and you can get to your data anytime from anywhere. Whatever way of backing up you choose is good if you use it and better, if you know how to use it. Anyone with basic computer skills can do it. Also, keep in mind that you need an Internet connection if you want tot use online backup. Another good tip would be to make a copy of the data you store and keep it in a different place. For example, if you have something stored on a CD, make a copy of that CD. Keep one CD at home and one at work so you’re covered.

Dos-part 3. The best way to store your data is to have both online and offline storages. This is the most secure way, but it is a bit more expensive. This is because if something happens to your PC, you have your CDs, DVDs, memory sticks. And if something happens to those to, you have your files copied online and you can access them from elsewhere. But, if you consider online backup a tad too pricy for your security, then try out just the offline methods. Only remember to have two copies kept in separate places. Online backup saves you the time that you spend on backing up your data to offline means but it’s up to you.

Don’ts. The most important “don’t” is don’t forget to back up your data! Even though the computer is a revolutionary machine, it can be damaged, it can break. So don’t save your data only on the internal hard disk because you can lose it very easily. Don’t save your data on CDs and then put them wherever. They can easily get scratched and malfunction or not function at all. Don’t forget to backup your files every week or every day. It depends on the updates of the important data. Don’t forget your password to the online storage account because it may almost save your life one day. Don’t underestimate data backup, disasters happen every day.

It doesn’t matter if it’s your personal or your business computer. I bet you have files that you need and you would be devastated if they got lost. Pictures, account information, emails, address books and not the mention your business data which includes customer details, accounts and everything your business creates. I know, backing up your data is time consuming, but just think of the benefits you get from securing you data and not desperately trying to recover it after a disaster. Wouldn’t it be easier to have everything you need just a click or an external hard drive away? Well, yes, it would and it would also save you from pulling your hair. Just in case.

it took this trip down under for me to start thinking that being employed is also a form of enterpreneurship.

there were 2 days of a marathon event we hosted for a client and the preparation took about a week when we all but camped at office.

We had our own scripts to chart and the freedom to design 2 days just the way we wanted it. After the initial resistance to freedom, I think we liberated our minds to think and think some more to make an intense 2 days of discussion of numbers, scope, validation and detailing of accounting services and procurement as much fun as possible.

We were of course dancing to an invisible piper, but I think even an entrepreneur is - if he is working on an idea he wants to sell.

It made me think that being at work is may be finding the right job that you enjoy and also ensure that you are with people whom you want to be with.

Doing what you like is freedom, liking what you do is happiness read the poster i had as a teenager.

I am constatly in discussions with friends who have start ups and have left some lucrative jobs to do their own stuff. Of course I admire their courage and grit. At the same time I wonder if it was a wise move for them. What about their commitment to support their family (my friends were much married and are first generation entrepreneurs, so did not have a large family pool to dip into).

My friend's logic was this was his chance to live life on his terms. All well said, but after 10 years, no offense to him, he is not the next Bill Gates - his ideas were good and his business is on its own two feet and he certainly makes both ends meet. But to me he could have done a lot better if he had a longer corporate stint and then took the plunge.

My friend says, people who stay on in the corporate world for a long time, will never come into business and risk it all full time.

Rather a sweeping statement and I am waiting for my friends in this great forum to prove my friend wrong!

It is less than a week before Diwali, and I was cursing those stars that kept me Down Under during those formative shopping weeks. I dreamed about the pre Diwali shopping rendevous that means we meander down the lanes of T Nagar, the Mecca of shopping in Chennai and get baptised. I kind of missed those pre - weeks as I was consumed by work.

I rushed back to India with just 2 weeks before Diwali. The first place I land is right in the heart of T Nagar. The anticipation of locking horns with thousands of other shoppers in about 5 KMS of Shopping Arcades that at its weakest moments houses at least 10000 people, sends a rush of adrenalian.

Why don't we go to XXX Silks that is in Mylapore where it is less crowded, wonders my husband? I give him the you-have -to-be- kidding look and just butt head first into the mela. I have this idea of a saree that is not too traditional with the usual green/maroon combination and heavy zari, but I am looking for some thing more contemporary with unsual combinations with less zari, more metal finish but not glossy, with some neo art prints that are not gothic. My husband looks on at a comfortable sofa at the far end of the store with great longing. I blackmail him that the object of bringing him along to the store is so I buy something that he likes too. He said he likes the saree I wore during our wedding reception the best. I realised my error and changed my tag line.

By now I have had a cursory glance at all the key floors in the shop and come back to the one where I started the expedition. I look at a particular raw silk ethnic work and search for colours that are more appealing. I tusssle a little with a lady next to me who seemed more interested in what I was choosing that what she couldgrab. But then she picked up a raw silk piece in fushia shade that I totally was hooked. My mind said that had to be mine.

As she looked over at the next piece, the rust colored piece I had looked at earlier, she dropped the Fushia into my waiting arms. I immediately took it to billing.

Billing is my husband's area. Did I tell you this was my new tagline??

For the last 6 months i have been a part of a Climate Change Diplomacy group of 20 researchers from across the world convening at a study on the initiatives pursued by individual countries for climate Change. Some of the most active proponents of this cause or European nations, island states, many countries in africa. Some of the developing countries like india, brazil are debating on the extent of tradeoff one can pursue given the exponential growth that they are witnessing right now. Countries like China and US seem to contribute majorly to the GHG (Greenhouse gas) emissions.

The previous meeting of the UNFCCC was at 2007 wherein the Bali Action Plan was drafted in a effort to preserve the forest and ecosystem.The initiative was focused towards tech transfer that can aid poorer countries to leapfrog over development and ensure they leave a lesser carbon footprint.

We at the Knowledge Foundation are rolling out a campaign on Climate Change as a part of Elements5 . The campaign is to substitute CFL lighting at rural schools across tamil nadu. The rationale behind the campaign is that we intend to reduce energy consumption in schools that are currently using filament bulbs and tubelights with better energy saving alternatives like CFL. This incident I have witnessed at one of the nationalized bank at Kothrud branch, Pune on Jul 3, 2009.

When I went to a branch for updating my passbook and withdrawing money from the bank. The branch was deserted. All employees were having a coffee and chitchatting with each other. When I explained the purpose of my visit, I was told that there is no connectivity and no transaction can be done. Following is the summary of my discussion with the branch manager.

I: There is no connectivity?
Br. Manager: Yes, there is no connectivity.

I: I have to withdraw money and update my passbook.
Br. Manager: Please come after some time or Monday.

I: How much time will be required to restore connectivity?
Br. Manager: May be 1 ½ hrs

I: Do you have a redundancy in connectivity?
Br. Manager: What it is? I am not sure. My branch is not connected at the moment.

I: What is a SLA definition for the service provider?
Br. Manager: I am not sure. Please talk with HO.

I: What about business continuity plan?
Br. Manager: I am not aware of business continuity plan. At the moment, no transaction can be done. I am not aware of fallback arrangements.

I: You may have other banking transactions like cheque clearing, DMat services etc. What will happen to these transactions?
Br. Manager: We will do it once the connectivity is restored. There will be some pending work and we may have to plan for it.

I: Is the bank / branch certified for ISO27001, BS25999?
Br. Manager: I am not sure. My branch is certified for ISO9001: 2000.
