Days 87-30: Atari 2600 Cartridges

Shared by César Córcoles
Hale. Un poco de arqueología videojueguera...

Just when you thought it was safe to read the bava, I got fifty-seven more entries as an attempt to catch up on my 110 Toys to Xmas series, this post should serve three functions:

1) Catch me up, so I can wave to all the haterz that questioned whether this series would survive;
2) reacquaint you with all that groovy packaging art for the Atari 2600 cartridges that in many ways defined their appeal;
3) provide all you Atari 2600 junkies with some great nostalgia, even better each image and title links to the actual rom for each of these games, which can be played with the Stella Emulator (which has both Mac and PC versions).

Image credit: Wishbook’s “1983.xx.xx Sears Christmas Catalog P600″

Image credit: Wishbook’s “1983.xx.xx Sears Christmas Catalog P599″

So here we go, but before I start my list, it must be noted that come 1978/1979 the Sears Xmas Catalogs were literally taken over by video games, in many ways the toy section of these catalogs were indelibly changed with the advent of mass consumer video games, because the toy market itself was forever changed. Alongside VCRs and cable, the advent of video games was without question a defining cultural trend of my childhood, and I would argue all three defined me in some real way, as they did the culture of capital. Take a look at the markets surrounding video games and cable, and while the VHS went the way of the dodo bird, it in many ways may be the most important in terms of business models and devastating impacts on the transformation of movie culture to a more personal, insular experience, while at the same time making popular independent film all the more accessible. But, I digress, this post is gonna be long enough

Below are 57 cartridges I acquired between 1978 and 1986, aside from the Halloween and Texas Chainsaw Massacre cartridges by Wizard Games which I discovered much later. And while I’ll be posting about the actual Atari 2600 console in the coming weeks—that’s a whole ‘nother story, and by far one of the greatest single toys of all time—the following games represent literally 100s, if not 1000s, of hours of play from my adolescent years, and while I have my favorites like Adventure, Haunted House, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Pitfall!, Night Driver, and Joust, and a few more, I tried to list as many games here as possible, though I must admit there were more. So, it’s official 1102xmas is back in effect!

Never fear! Apple last month posted Bluetooth Update 1.0 for Windows, which improves the performance of the Apple Bluetooth devices when running Windows XP and Windows Vista on a Mac computer using Boot Camp. Inside are the goods you need: Magic Mouse drivers for Windows even if you aren't using Boot Camp.

SquareTrade, Inc., a company that offers extended warranties on all sorts of consumer electronics, has published a study on laptop longevity based on 30,000 costumer experiences. The numbers show that Apple is fourth in terms of reliability, as machines from the Cupertino company suffered a smidgen over 10 percent failure rate over a two-year period and an estimated 17.4 percent rate over three years. Asus, Toshiba, and Sony all had lower two-year and estimated three-year failure rates, with Asus taking the top spot at just under 10 percent over two years and an estimated 15.6 percent over three.

The statistics relevant to our interests are based on laptops that failed due to "natural causes"—not machines that were accidentally damaged. These numbers are broken up among nine different manufactures, all of which had a sample size of at least 1,000 units. Although Apple isn't on top, it can at least look at Dell, Lenovo, Acer, Gateway, and HP as companies that provide inferior quality laptops. While Dell was less than one percentage point above Apple on the three-year estimated statistics, Hewlett Packard had an estimated failure rate over of over 25 percent over three years.

I’ve been Bosewatched

Shared by César Córcoles

For those who don’t follow my Twitter stream, I’ve been running a ‘bosewatch‘ hashtag campaign for the last couple of months. You see, my desk overlooks Regent Street and the Bose store is directly opposite. I tweet casual observations about what’s going on there, often passing comment on how empty it looks.

It’s all been a bit tongue-in-cheek. Casual brand stalking if you like. But everything changed at lunchtime today. I got a phone call which began…

“Hello, is that Simon?”

“Yes, hello.”

“Hi, I’m Martin from the Bose store on Regent Street.”

Oh. My. God.

A brief conversation followed where we discussed my tweets, their footfall and occasional quiet spells. To be honest I was absolutely dumbfounded that I’d been called. He asked if I would like to visit the store, get a tour and ‘expereince Bose’. I didn’t need asking twice and duly went along with Stuart.

I met Martin who turned out to be the Assistant Store Manager. We chatted about the difficulties of trying to convey the virtues of Bose products in a retail environment. We discussed the Apple approach (a few doors up the road). How they link all their products up to the web which effectively gives anyone free internet access and thus incredible footfall and how to translate this to Bose. But I can understand the potential problems of letting 50 teenagers into the store to charge iPods whilst listening to music and disrupting the sale of a £10k system. Whilst there I had the full-on Bose cinematic experience and left clutching a pair of headphones (that I paid for). Some say “sucker”. I say, “have you actually heard these things?”. I do like Bose products, I’ve had one of their stereos for nearly 10 years.

Grip ‘n’ grin – Me with Martin, Bose Regent Street Asst. Store Manager

Anyway, back to my point. What I think is exceptional is the way Bose listened to and reacted to the social web.

Let’s take a look at what they could have done:

Sent some inane, generic ‘can we help you’ message via Twitter from their @BoseService account.

Tried to ’shut me up’.

Ignored the internet and pretended it didn’t exist.

It was, apparently, the MD in the US who emailed the Regent Street store asking if they knew anything about me? A very small amount of internet digging then lead them to my number.

So there we have it. A brand that engaged their stalker with finesse and in a very personal way. Their products exist in the real world and that is where they talked to me. “You know what, you talk about us a lot, why don’t you come and see what we have to offer.”

Exceptional really.
