Fall Hair Trends: The 70s are Back!

Celebrity hairstylist David Babaii's forecast for Fall Hair 2009 includes a flashback to the 70's: an era considered to be a major turning point for hair with the birth of the blow dryer, Farah Fawcett's famous style, the Shag, the Afro and punk.

According to celebrity stylist David Babaii, hair is all about movement with soft layers to achieve an updated version of Farah's world famous hairstyle.

DB: Opt for a longer length fringe so you can easily create changes in your style. The key is creating a lot of changes using accessories like a fabulous headband or scarf to transform your style as often as your mood fits.

The 70's Shag incorporated many disconnected layers. In 2009, any disconnect is out dated. A well blended and softly textured version of the Shag will definitely turn heads.

I love going to a Spa, whether I am getting a facial, a rub down, or a Synergy Aesthetic Massage, I feel like I just got a tune up. Last week I checked out The Sanctuary in Ocean Beach, San Diego.

I have been to many spas in the San Diego area and I have rave reviews for all but one. Each haven has its own charm, skill, and ambience, but Sanctuary was the first spa I entered feeling completely comfortable. When I arrive I am the only one there, this is a private spa. Small, tidy and appealing, I feel like the Spa is my own personal sanctuary (pun not intended) for the duration of my stay.

Yes, you read it right. Sperm is good for your skin, well spermine that is. I was sitting at the Townhouse Spa with President, Jamie Ahn and almost spit out my tea when she told me about this new facial the spa was offering cleverly called the "Babyface Facial."

I came to find that spermine is a natural antioxidant that protects against free radicals and is found in places like the liver, and of course, in seminal fluid. Back in 2001, a bio-tech company called Bioforskning in Norway obtained the patent on spermine after it's benefits on the skin were discovered by Norwegian scientists at the University of Tromso. (I wonder how this discovery came about... hmmm...)

File Your Uneven Nail Beds

Most of us have uneven nail beds (the part where the white tip meets the pink skin under your nail). Hence, when you’re filing, the automatic tendency is to shape to that curve. However, you can then end up with some nails squarish, other roundish, and others oval.

To avoid this common pitfall, simply file your nails before removing your polish! The nail polish blocks your sight line to the nail bed so you file based on shape alone.

If you’re someone who doesn’t paint your tips, practice filing based on shape alone… or just throw on a quick coat of polish just on the tips of your nails. Remove after filing and then follow with a good hand cream or oil (I recommend Jojoba Oil to strengthen nails and soften cuticles).

Divas I have been using a new product on my hair that I am madly madly in love with. It is Alterna's Hemp Organics Straightening Balm. There's nothing like the expertise of a professional makeup artist. Today we came across this great advice at Faces by Farah.

I have been in 2 weddings since I graduated and seen a few other artists apply makeup and almost all of them used the mascara wand from the used tube on their clients and then placed it back in the tube only to use it on another client.

I don't care how great of an artist you are this is NEVER acceptable!
Disposable wands should always be used and never double dipped as to not contaminate the entire tube.

Hygiene should always be a priority. Too bad it often gets discarded for convenience.

1.Check your diet
I'm sure you've heard it before: good skin starts from the inside out. So infuse your diet with antioxidants which have been proven to aid your skin in keeping its youthful glow. try:

Beta-carotene (e.g. carrots) may neutralize free radicals which effect your skin on a cellular level. Anthocyanidins (e.g. berries) increase your cellular defense system. Flavanones (e.g. citrus) and flavonols (e.g. apples, onions) may increase cellular defense as well as neutralize free radicals. Sulforaphane (e.g. broccoli, cauliflower) may increase your cellular defense system.
Vitamin A (found in dairy, fish, and liver) and Vitamin C (e.g. citrus fruits) both help to protect cells from free radicals. Vitamin E (e.g. nuts, oils, seeds) can also protect cells from free radicals. Selenium (e.g. meats, tuna) may be preventive in damage to your cells from free radicals.

2. Remove all your makeup.
This one is helpful both for the acne-prone and the aging-conscious. Throughout the day your face gets dirty. Products you use clog your pores causing excessive oil buildup which will prevent skin cells from regenerating.
3. Drink water.

4. Wear sunscreen.
Its pretty self-explanatory. Sun is a well documented danger to skin both aesthetically and healthily.

5.Touch your face as little as possible.
When you’re washing your face, are you scrubbing vigorously? Harsh, hard, or vigorous movements and touches can stretch and pull at the skin in an adverse way. For instance, you should pat your face dry, rather than rubbing a cloth up and down. This includes applying your makeup with brushes instead of your fingers. When applying makeup we often don't realize our own strength and apply too much pressure with our hands. Brushes allow for a smooth, even finish delivered with a light touch.

I hate bad hair days, (I mean, really, who does?) and I often find myself trying to figure out the best way to resolve this problem so that I can get on with the rest of my day. The best solution I have come up with is to slick all my hair back and make a smooth, chic bun. Of course this requires some tools. I use my hair brush, an ouchless ponytail elastic, a few bobby pins and a non-sticky hair gel for hold. I specifically like the Ouidad Climate Control Heat and Humidity Gel. I rub a little over smooth hair and I have hold all day long, without the hard shell other hair gels have unfortunately left in my hair. This gel is light and can even be used on the hair if you want to blow-dry straight. My advice - Give it a try!

When buying hair products, I usually look for the black hair superstars like Dudley, Motions, and Aphogee, but I'm beginning to find out that branching out isn't always a bad thing. I've been hearing a lot of great things about product lines that aren't necessarily made for black hair. Most recently, I've heard amazing things about RedKen's Smooth Down Butter Treat when used as a leave-in conditioner. Here's what Redken says:

Kanebo's skincare line for sensitive skin, Freeplus, will release two new items for fall 2008.

Though, I've never used the products, myself. I've heard nothing, but fabulous things about the Japanese skincare retailer.

The new toner, Maintenance Lotion, and the new moisturizer, Maintenance Emulsion, will be added to the range. Apart from the six oriental herbal extracts featured in Freeplus' lineup (please see my brand profile on Freeplus to find out more), Jezo Spruce and Chinese Peony extracts will be included in the two new products. They are said to be able to improve skin's elasticity.

The two products will be available in Japan from October 16th.

I have a few favorite places in the world. One of them is Sally Beauty Supply Store. The one I live next too is pretty small, but that doesn't mean it's not filled with endless treasures for me to discover.

During my most recent trip to beauty wonderland, I came across an aisle of sale items. Of course, I had to pick a few goodies. One of which was Proclaim Natural 7 Oil.

I have to say that it worked wonders. The oil was silky, and not too greasy. Lastly, it smells heavenly. I've only been using it for a few weeks, so I'll keep you updated on how it works.

How To Treat Scalp Acne

Just about everyone knows what acne is and that it commonly breaks out on the face, chest, arms and on the back. Acne also appears on other parts of the body as well, but unless you're someone with acne in one of these 'other' areas, you may not have realized this.

If you think about what acne is – a skin condition – it makes sense then that acne can appear almost anywhere on the body. One area in particular that is not often associated with acne is the scalp.

Scalp acne, the mildest form of which is also known as scalp folliculitis, probably occurs more frequently than most people realize. This form of acne is most often triggered during times of high stress. This irritating scalp condition usually develops whenever the scalp becomes oilier than usual, such as when the hair isn't washed frequently or when hair care products that contain a considerable amount of oil are used.

Scalp acne is very itchy and that makes it difficult for those who have it to leave it alone. In its mildest form, the pustules are small, crusty, and they're sore. They appear mainly on the upper forehead at the hairline. A person can have just a few pustules or there can be many.

A more severe form of scalp acne called acne necrotica miliaris is characterized by inflamed larger papules with black-colored crusts. This form of acne can leave behind scars that resemble those resulting from Chicken Pox. There is an even more severe form of scalp acne that primarily affects adult African-American men, but can actually affect anybody, regardless of race or sex. This extremely rare condition is a combination of large cysts and smaller pustules and papules that grow to be very large.

Treatment for Scalp Acne

The mild form of scalp acne can be treated the way most other acne is treated. Keep the affected area clean by using a product that contains salicylic acid. Remember though that these products can cause excessive dryness so use only on affected areas. For better control, apply using a cotton ball.

Since oily hair is a contributing factor to scalp acne, using shampoo that is formulated for oily hair and scalp is another good option. Hair care products designed especially to treat seborrhea have also been used successfully. And since many people use more than just shampoo on their hair, it's a good idea to check the labels on all hair care products and make changes as necessary.

Never attempt to treat the more severe forms of scalp acne without first speaking to a doctor or a dermatologist.

One thing that should not be used to treat scalp acne is any product that contains benzoyl peroxide. The peroxide, when it comes into contact with hair, can change the color of the hair and result in a less-than-desirable look. Those who have chemically-textured their hair (for example those with perms) or color-treated their hair are most prone to hair trouble when benzoyl peroxide comes into contact with hair.

Black people don't use hairspray, but they sure will pour on the spritz. Unfortunately, it's been noted time and again that alcohol could be one of the worst things for anyone's hair.

I've used my fair share of spritz in my day, and I've never been a fan of the crunchy curls that result from use. Maybe it's just me, but that's just not right. Hard hair is not cute.

Once I switched hairdressers a few years ago, spritz left my life for good. One day I asked her how she got my tendrils to last for days while remaining soft and manageable. That's when she introduced me to Keracare Curling Wax. Since then, I've never looked back. The wax gives my hair a beautiful sheen that's not sticky or oily. So I just had to share the knowledge.

Adult Acne in Women

Research has shown acne can recur in adulthood. This happens more often to females than males that may break out again in the late 20’s and early 30’s.

It was once believed that hormones are the root cause of this skin disorder. Further studies have proven this to be wrong and scientists are still trying to find an answer.

Acne can appear in different kinds of blemishes. There are whiteheads that are small and look like a lump on the skin. The pores of these are open while those that are open are called blackheads.

Papules are color red and appear like pimples. The last of these are the pustules which are inflammations caused by the attack of white cells on the affected follicle.

There are various treatment options available for females who have acne. The person can try one to find out if it works the moving on to another if it does not work.

The first of these could be the use of oil treatments. Some examples of these are Bergamot Oil, Clove Oil, Lavender Oil, Rosewood Oil and Tea Tree Oil. These can be purchased in the supermarket, which does not have to be prescribed by a doctor.

Some people who are satisfied with the performance of the treatment recommend the use of Grapeseed oil which speeds up the discovery for anyone who has acne.

There is another product in the market called the Skin Care Regimen. This involves using soap, a cleanser, a moisturizer and a repairing solution. Those who developed it believe that people who use this properly will be able to get rid of acne.

The individual may not have enough money to pay for a skin care product such as the one mentioned. If that is the case, the customer can try washing the face with water then applying a cleansing pad or facial strip on the face.

This should be left to dry on the face for a few minutes so that its contents can absorb excess oil and dirt in the face so that acne can be treated.

If using home treatment is not effective, it is time to use medication that is prescribed by a dermatologist. Products that are affordable are retinoic acid, azelaic acid cream, alpha hydroxyl acids, benzoyl peroxide, topical antibiotics and birth control pills.

Among the items mentioned, some doctors and patients believe that benzoyl peroxide is the most effective to treat acne. There are those who do not agree with this because another product may be able to produce better results.

If these drugs are not effective, the doctor can prescribe something stronger such as accutane or sortret. Patients should be aware that this has side effects especially for those who are pregnant because it can cause birth defects.

Patients who are scared of these side effects have one last option in order to treat acne. The individual can undergo surgery, which can be done in a few sessions. Some people think this is better because drug treatment takes two to three months.

There are many skin disorders that the person can get in life and the most common is acne. The individual should try home treatment immediately or get the advice first of the doctor before trying any type of treatment.

What's The Big Deal About Dominican Hair Salons?

Like many little black girls, I was taught that my hair is my crowning glory, and that it was my responsibility to take the best care of it. Dutifully, I headed every other week to a black hair salon where I sat patiently with my mom until my hair was done which only took about 5 hours on average and cost about an arm and a leg.

Well-groomed eyebrows are a must. But before you reach for the tweezers determine where to start. By locating three key pivotal points of reference, you will know where and what to tweeze. Simply follow these steps and you will have perfect brows.

POINT A. Hold a pencil or the handle of a brush vertically against the side of your nose, noticing where it meets the brow. That is where brow should begins.

POINT B. Hold the pencil against your nostril and move it diagonally across the outer half of the iris of your eye. Notice where the pencil meets the brow: This is the best place for the peak of your arch. If you tweeze from Point A to B, tapering the line slightly thinner toward the peak, you will create the ideal shape for your brow.

POINT C. Again, place the pencil against your nostril, but this time, extend it diagonally to the outer corner of your eye. Where it meets the brow is the best place for your brow to end. What they say:

What I Say: I purchased Clinique's All About Eyes after hearing several mixed reviews, but I though I'd give it a try in order to reduce the puffines under my eyes in the morning. I'd say it was super effective. I gently applied the cream under my eyes right before I went to bed for two weeks, and without fail my eyes were baby's butt smooth the next morning.

I still don't know if it's worth the $27.50, though.

L'oreal Voluminous Natural Mascara makes some pretty bold claims. Right on the front of it's packaging. It says it’ll give lashes natural-looking volume and perfect definition. Flip it over and it goes on to claim the mascara is smudge-proof and flake-proof.

And it doesn’t stop there.

Loreal takes beauty-boasting to a whole new level by boldly proclaiming this $7.50 mascara to be 100% clump free. I'm always suspicious of an oversell, so I bought the bright yellow package expecting nothing special.

I hate to admit this, but I was wrong in the most fabulous way. The mascara worked marvelously giving me subtly spectacular lashes.
